This hotel is really good. Its in a great area which it has everything near by so you will not have to travel far for things that you will need. Very nice staff and very clean!! The only thing that they need to improve is a little more hot water but very good!!!

A few drawbacks

The hotel does not have air conditioning, and the room can get stuffy. Opening the windows can bring in a breeze, but the area around the hotel is extremely noisy, even during the night. Otherwise, it is very charming. The food service is a bit pricey .

The hotel needs major interior updates

Great Location

This hotel had a great location and was beautiful! The rooms were pretty nice. No AC but fan worked well. Lots of noice outside though. The restaraunt had great food and even better service! Only complaints are that our light was out in the bathroom. We immediately called to report it and ask for more towels. The towels were brought fast, but our light was never fixed. The man at the front desk was nice but seemed frazzled at times and got irritated if you asked too many questions. Beds were little hard. Did have a great computer/recreation room!!!

Good for the money, and location

We stayed our first night here before traveling to other parts of costa rica because of the conveinence and price of the hotel. Couldn't complain, the buffet breakfast was better than expected and the room was good. The staff was friendly and helpful and kept our bags later for no charge as our bus wasn't leaving until the afternoon. I'd definitely recommend it for a few nights in SJ.

Older Hotel -- Street Noise -- No AC

My biggest gripes were (1) the lack of security, (2) no hot water, and (3) the lack of air conditioning. There was some street noise because -- with no AC -- you had to keep your windows open. The windows were open into an internal area of the hotel. I'm not sure who has access to this area but I did not feel safe. After complaining twice about the hot water, the house keeper came up and turned the water on full-blast for almost 30 minutes. Finally, the water warmed up. It never did get hot.

Terrific place to get the flavor of San Jose

We stayed at the Gran Hotel Costa Rica for our one night in San Jose and really appreciated its historic character, great location, and high quality. The buffet breakfast was especially nice -- served in a beautiful room with great view.
