Clermont-Ferrand is set in the heart of the Auvergne Volcanoes Natural Park and is known as having the richest collection of Roman art in France. Most of the oldest buildings of the city are black as they are built with volcanic rock. The Cathedral of Notre Dame is an excellent example of this and is a must see to anyone visiting Clermont-Ferrand. From almost anywhere in Clermont-Ferrand you will be able to see Puy de Dome, a major extinct volcano mountain. Hike to the higher summit and you'll discover The Temple of Mercury, a Roman ruin, and a monument to Eugene Renaux, an airplane pilot who flew on the volcano in 1911. Enjoy exploring the tiny medieval streets in Clermont-Ferrand, the many treasures are sure to surprise you.
