This hotel, located in a former convent, gives a very good first impression. However, the place has idiosyncracies that impact guest comfort. Two problems in the bathroom are noteworthy. Firstly, there was no fan or ventilation of any kind, so it got pretty steamy. Secondly, it was very difficult to get in and out of the shower. I still have the bruises to show for it. Getting to the room was also problematic since the outdoor walkways were poorly covered and had no drainage, so after each rain, there were unavoidable puddles along the route to the rooms. In the bedroom, there was one small glass shelf between the double beds which contained the telephone, an alarm clock, and a badly wired light--not much room for anything else. These are all small issues, but the combined effect is not what I generally expect to find in a Camino Real hotel.

One could not ask to be in a more convenient location. The hotel is just two and a half blocks from the Zócalo, the center of Puebla life. Being a bit away from the Zócalo is a plus, for the hotel is very tranquil. Since it is an ex-convent from the 16th century, it is a gem of Spanish colonial architecture, replete with large patios bordered with arches, remains of original wall paintings, and tall ceilings. The rooms are a bit small, but not overly so. Guests have to realize that they used to be the cells of the nuns, and to enlarge everything would be to change the historical quality of the building. Beds were very comfortable, and our room had amenities such as cable TV, a security box, and mini-bar/refrigerator. However a few things such as tables, TV stands, and bathroom plumbing need to be upgraded, as they are showing wear. Reception services and the restaurant were excellent. All staff are exceptionally personable and ready to help the guests. In spite of a few minor inconveniences, my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hotel Camino Real. It has a great location, is reasonably priced, and offers insight into the culture and history of Mexico through its authentic colonial atmosphere..

Admiring its art and architecture is something that guests can perfectly combine with a day of work. The atmosphere reproduced inside each of the rooms bring to mind the viceroyship era due to the furnishings, distribution and aesthetics.
