    AVOID THIS HOTEL Rooms not made up well (NO fitted sheat, or mattress pad). Forced to touch mattress when bed shet slipped. FOOD was NOT good. Did not taste fresh, lacked care in preparation. Forced to eat in unairconditioned, outdoor areas, very loud since the hotel is 95% occupied by costa rica locals which are sold rooms at a special low rate not available to tourists. Impossible location (forced to travel by boat and land) makes for a wasted day. The dark brown sand beach is ugly and filled with litter, and rotten wood pulp in the water. Provided kayaks lacked seats. Forced to sit on hard plastic.

Location. Embraced by gardens and surrounded by a private nature preserve, Barcelo Tambor Beach All Inclusive is located in San Jose, Costa Rica. The resort is a short boat ride away from Cabo Blanco Natural Reserve, and Quad Bike tours begin at the resort.

Hotel Features. Six restaurants and bars offer dining on the resort's premises. El Tucan features international cuisine, and serves buffet-style meals. A 100-square-meter conference room provides space that accommodates group activities. Internet access is available for a fee. Leisure amenities include three lighted tennis courts, a casino, and sports and sand courts. The hotel features an outdoor pool with a waterfall and access to the nine-hole, par 35 golf course at the adjacent Barcelo Los Delfines Golf and Country Club. Dance classes, handball, soccer, archery, darts, table tennis, card games, croquet, boccia, and water polo are available on site. Scuba-diving trips and bicycle rentals can be arranged through the hotel's travel agency for a fee.

Guestrooms. The Barcelo Tambor Beach's 402 beachfront guestrooms include balconies or terraces and two double beds. Additional room amenities include minibars, in-room safes, coffeemakers, satellite television and air conditioning. Select accommodations located on the upper floors feature ceiling fans. Décor elements include terra cotta-tiled floors and warm color schemes with bright, tropical accents.

Expert Tip. The Barcelo Tambor Beach resort stands along a six-kilometer beach. A private nature preserve with a walkway from which guests can see monkeys, birds, and other wildlife is located on the resort grounds.
