    The seaview cottage was comfortable and cozy and had a fabulous view of the harbor from inside the cottage and the patio. Only drawback is the downtown area with restaurants and shops being a walk down a windy road with no sidewalks.

Location. Akaroa Cottages occupies 12 acres of private bush land in Akaroa Harbour, New Zealand, and overlooks the harbor and the sea, one kilometer from Akaroa Township.

Hotel Features. Set on an expanse of trees, shrubbery and rolling lawns, Akaroa Cottages amenities include complimentary wireless Internet access in public areas, conference facilities, guest laundry facilities and dry cleaning, barbecue grills, a picnic area and a patio. Video rentals, tour assistance and massage services are also available. Recreational amenities include bicycle riding and mountain biking, hiking and bird watching. A play area also is on site. Continental breakfasts are served daily for a fee. Small pets are considered.

Guestrooms. The property includes 10 ground-floor cottages that offer separate sitting areas and balconies or patios with harbor and sea views. Cottages also include wood-burning fireplaces, kitchens or kitchenettes, minibars and double jetted tubs. Internet access and local calls are complimentary, and cottages also offer CD and DVD players with stereo systems, cassette players, and televisions. Ceiling fans, desks, hair dryers and iron/ironing boards also are included.

Expert Tip. Akaroa Township is a quiet fishing town on the south side of Bank Peninsula. The town offers a French flavor because of its history; it was used by French whalers in the 1800s as a refuge from stormy seas. Akaroa Harbour Cruises offers tours to a seal colony and a chance to swim with Hector's dolphins, a rare species found only in New Zealand.
