The Cancun Hotel Zone rests on a slit of land bound by a lagoon and the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. Sunseekers crowd the white-sand beaches. The hotel was beautiful, however the check in process takes entirely way too long. We travelled with others and were all over the hotel. Someone was already checked into a room that one of our friends were given so we had to go back and start all over again. The service started off great and then went downhill after that. Reservations were a pain to […] make no one seemed to know the correct way to do this. The only thing that saved us was the bartenders at the pool bar who were amazing. All in all very disappointing, beautiful property but service needs work!! Read more

Pros : 1. The staff is very friendly. The people are nice...infact very very nice ! 2. The view from the ocean view is amazing. Try and get an ocean room with a jacuzzi. avoid the lagoon view, very boring view. Cons : The food is ok. The have a few restaurants but the only one available for lunch for the all inclusive package is the one that has a […] buffet. The pool is not heated. It can get pretty cold. The hotel looks like a contruction zone. Read more

The Hotel is beutiful, but right now they are refurbishing the lobby. I went with my baby 22 months no ramp access to the beach. My room security box was broke...but they fixed within 1 hour. My biggest disappointing is with the air condition was broke the last day...the entire night. during the check out they said that they dont had my call on their […] records..and they had a report that was broke at 11:00pm...the point is that do not gave a discount on our account for this discomfort or admit the issue. Look like we lie to them. The manager do not show...just send messages. Read more

We had been here once before and our first visit was amazing. This time was a bit dissappointing. The front desk staff was very rude and when we finally checked in we were hounded about some breakfast thing to tell us about the hotel, and its new features etc. they wasted 20 min of our time and it was sooo annoying. We weren't interested in thier new […] hotels. Our flight was long, all we wanted was to check in. When we got to our 2 rooms they weren't even beside each other. One of them was unbearably humid and smelled weird so we asked for a new room. The front desk lady was so rude and helpful in no way. After arguing for a bit.. She told us there was another room in a diff tower. It was basically on the other side of the hotel but atleast it was clean so we took it. There was construction all throughout the hotel and alot of the elevators didn't work so it made it very difficult to get from one side of the hotel to the other. Overall this stay was very frustrating. Read more

A lot of small problems and one big one: when we arrived, the toilet wouldn't stop running, they fixed immediately, then no problem, a cover in the bathroom fell off, they just leaned it against the wall and just before we left, the main door stopped locking. Also, heard walking in room above us, thus not as quiet as I would have expected. However, […] the big problem was the hard sales pitch for a time share. Don't go on this pitch, they work hard to try to sign you up. Other than that, it is a beautiful hotel with a great beach. Read more

we stayed 6 nights in a boutique hotel in Playa del Carmen and our last and 7th night at Gran Melia in Cancun. Maybe we just prefer the smaller setting b/c this big generic hotel was really disappointing. Nothing "bad" per se, the people were polite, our room was clean but it just had no personal touch at all. granted It is their slow season and it […] seemed very understaffed we had a hard time finding people on the property to ask questions etc, and it just seemed empty and boring. the pool is pretty, the lobby is stunning and overall the facility is really nice and kept up well (however we both did get sick after eating room service that night). the long hotel row where this hotel is at doesn't offer much - two malls and alot of chain restaurants as well as a vegas like club area that is really for the under 25 set. so the morale of the story is if you want a vacation where you can lie around at the pool and eat and relax and have people bring you drinks and go to bed early this is your type of hotel. if you want any type of local culture, including food or sightseeing or meeting any locals this is not the place for you. This is our 4th stay at the Gran Melia. While the hotel is still beautiful, it is in definite need of remodeling/renovation. The bathroom door lock was broke, safe broke, lamp shade busted, pictures crooked and the worst part was our room flooded from the rain. After changing rooms twice because both were flooded, we finally got a room that wasn't leaking. […] Unfortunately the hotel is not prepared structurally for rain and needs to be fixed. The lobby is beautiful and has plenty of places to sit and relax both inside and out. Good nightly entertainment in the hotel. This was the first time we stayed where they actually had nightly entertainment so it was a pleasant surprise. The pool is very big/clean and great for kids and/or families. The beach and views of the Caribbean are priceless - really the whole reason we go! The staff is very courteous, however, pool service definitely went down hill. Average wait for food/drinks - 1/2 hour. Watch your tab - they did try charging us for things we didn't order! Prices have also went up. Airport is the worst. $16 USD for ONE slice of PIZZA. That was most disappointing and almost just plain disrespectful to tourists. Tip - BUY Mexican Products. Prices are more comparable to US products and taste the same. ** But do know the stores tend to hide these so you have to look a little harder. Overall we had a nice time but will most likely stay at another hotel next time around or visit another counrty in the Caribbean. Read more

At one time this may have been a great hotel but I don't think they understand you have to upkeep what you have. It rained three days we were there and you have to walk around all the water on the floor and towels they put on the ground. We were staying with another couple and in their room they had to replace the frig (that you'll be charged $10 a […] day to use) and their A/C wasn't working, they said they came and fixed it once but they just put a towel in the ceiling to keep the water from dripping out too much. The ponds and atrium are beautiful, also the pool is kept in great shape. The food you order from the restaurant will take forever to get and it would be better if you find a street vendor and eat there. We did not get bothered by anyone for the time shares except the first day. Cancun is great if you are looking for the night life and parties/drinking and if you'd like to pay higher prices than in the states but if you are looking at enjoying the amazing diving and ruins/eco-parks go to Cozumel or Playa del Camen. Upon check in, they tried to explain that my reservation document, which specified for a Kingsize bed, was just a recommendation, and attempted to move me to a room with two twins. I had to get their mind right on that, took until 9PM to get a room as a result. I went to use their restroom down near the elevator one day, it was missing a toilet seat- […] sorry, if you are a 4 star hotel, your toilets need seats. Took 3 days to get the fridgerator fixed/replaced- they would visit each day, tell me they were replacing it, on the 3rd day, they finally realized that I was not going to stop asking for a working fridge? So yeah, enjoy the pool and relax and have a $13 dollar hamburger. Read more

Overall the quality of the hotel is good, and the hotel concierges are very kind, but there are several things which made me disappointed. First, even though I requested a King size bed, they gave me two twin beds. I asked them to switch the room, but they told me I had to wait until the next morning. Ont the next day, I had to reasked at the front […] desk, since otherwise they would not change the rooms. I saw several other couples annoyed by similar problems. Second, I find the hotel is quite old, though it is renovated. Third, the front desk is very inefficient. Usually you have to wait about 10-15 mins. Read more

The room was clean. The overall appearance of the hotel is really nice. We didn't like that they don't have free wifi anywhere in the hotel. Some hotels will let you use their wifi in certain areas, such as the hotel. They charge for everything at the business center, including printing boarding pass. We also didn't like that there was no shuttle or […] elevator/escalor to take you to the hotel. You'll have to use stairs (approximately 35 steps) to get to the hotel. Uninvited Guests (bugs and people) The most disappointing event I experienced at this hotel is not feeling safety and security. A hotel employee entered my room in the evening while I was asleep. This freightened me; although it was an error an explanation was offered after I called to complain. Also I complained of insect bites the hotel staff appeared […] insensitive and uncaring. Only after the second complaint I was told the bedding would be changed. Lastly, in the middle of the night furniture from the room above was being moved around. Read more

Our stay was good other than the check-in process. There was not much of a line at all (one person in front of us), but it took about 20 minutes. We were told we wouldn't have a room until 3, an hour later. Went back to the desk at 3 to get our keys and room number and was told it would be 6 until it'd be ready. After a long day of travel and wanting […] to change clothes, we felt we shouldn't have to wait four hours after getting there to get a room. Finally, after much discussion, we got a room right away, but they were reluctant to give one to us, as they had to upgrade us in order to give us a room. One woman at check-in was particularly rude... talked on the phone and laughed while we were trying to get checked in. Read more

The reason to give 3 pts is because the bathroom was dirty: there was disgusting stuff in toilet and something dirty on the desk near sink on the first day. They changed our room to another […] smaller twin beds on that day for lack of rooms and replaced by the original room type we ordered in the next day. No more apologies and compensation. The Gran Melia is a very large impressive resort with beautiful well decorated common areas. However the rooms are showing their age, water stains on the ceilings and woodwork (from leaks on the balconies above), musty odor, and the bathroom had some mildew and several signs of poor remodeling jobs. The service and staff: There are a lot of them and […] they are very willing to serve, but bring a lot of tip money. The Red Level is worth the extra money. The free continental breakfast, after dinner drinks, and pool/beach bali beds will save you some money. Watch out for the $10/day use charge if you put any of you items in the fridge in the room. Don’t expect inexpensive drinks at any of the hotels along the Cancun Hotel strip in Mexico anymore, they all have become Americanized. Good luck. Read more

We like the hotel very much. It has some bothersome qualities that we have experienced in our five plus visits to this hotel. You have to wait over 5 minutes to get hot water the bathroom in the morning. The pool chairs are nice but not comfortable. When you are spending as much or more time in a pool lawn chair than a bed, you would like it to be comfortable. The […] air conditioning does not take out the dampness out of the room. Everything always feels damp in the room. I really didn't like the 200 dollar resort credit. When we had recieved this in the past, we could use it all toward the spa. This year it was for 10 - 20 dollars off various things which was totally useless and to us bogus. It is a beautiful hotel and the staff is great except for the front desk. It has always seemed slow and never enough help for all the years we have been going there. The music in the evenings seems to have declined in quality. We love the quiet pool. Read more

Great location, Great staffs, But Busy front desk, busy phone. It would take forever to have someone at their front desk answer your phone, if you are lucky it wouldn't hang up on you. Too complicated to check-in & check out. If you make reservation last minute or during weekend be prepared to have credit card $3000 Mexican peso on hold to get the room […] key until hotels.com can sort it out with them. Beautiful & big hotel would make you get lost easily to find your way to your room, pool, beach, front desk give yourself 30mins to find them. The internet is not free, the shade by the beach or business center is not free either. Pool closed by 7p (asa dark). Food is great, service is great except one of those day when one of the front desk staff was too busy or bad day from home, you would get the tough time and the rest of their front desk team have to apologize and make up for customer. Overall is great service, clean, convenience. Don't take taxi alone when it's dark. The bus $8.50 mexican peso along the coast line, don't go too far from your comfort zone. I wish I could remember that unfriendly female front desk name who I contacted with and made me felt like I didn't what to tell any friends to go back but the rest of the front desk are the great customer service team to try to do their best job. Our stay here from 12/31/11-1/07/12 was just average. This is a huge hotel and it is not fully all-inclusive, many people are on a european plan. I felt that for this reason the service was a bit lacking. The staff was more interested in the guests paying at each meal. We booked the all-inclusive option, with a deluxe ocean view KING bed. We were give […] two doubles and told there was nothing else. Tried to upgrade to the Red Level and told they couldn't honor an ocean view, but they could give us lagoon view for an extra charge. Hotel is clean, food was decent. No evening entertainment. Water and coffee in the room are EXTRA even for all inclusive. If you are used to all-inclusive resorts I think you will be dissapointed here. You have to sign for everything. Lots of up-charges. We traveled with another couple and were dissapointed at this Melia compared to the one we stayed at in Cabo the previous year, or even Dreams Cancun which we stayed at in May 2010. Decent hotel but if you want a true all-inclusive do elsewhere. Read more

The Gran Melia was perfectly pleasant to stay at, and for the most part the staff were very friendly and helpful. The main reason why I found this hotel somewhat unsatisfactory had to do with the package we booked, which was "all inclusive". In concept this is a good thing, however, there was one "main" buffet restaurant, and a couple poolside bars […] where one could order food no problem, but the 3 nicer restaurants that were heavily advertised by the resort were very difficult to get into. This would be fine if they were perpetually full, however, over the course of a 6-day trip, the people in our party (about a 150 person wedding party - and literally EVERYONE got this treatment) were constantly told that they were booked up, and upon walking by several times over the course of the night, they would be empty. Suffice it to say that it felt as though once the resort has your money in hand (e.g. - you've paid the day-rate for the "all inclusive" package) they perpetually steer you towards the "cheaper", more economical eating locations, and only under very persistent questioning would they cave and give most of us reservations in the nicer places. Also, just a word to the wise: the "beachy" drinks are NOT made with a full ounce of alcohol. I switched to vodka tonics quickly after realizing this, but I seriously watched around a thimble-full of rum go into a pina-colada many times over our visit. Long story short, don't go all inclusive if you do decide to go here... Read more

The Bad: All Inclusive is a joke. Your limited to some items on the room service menu, and IF you order room service, there is a $6 delivery fee. Thats basically the price of the meal itself! The sushi restaurant, Nami, is the biggest joke ever. They have 2 fish items, Tuna and Salmon. The tuna is the same kind you buy in little frozen blobks from your […] local seafood market.. its very watered down and tastes bad. Sashimi is an extra $$$ per order. Then they have 4 rolls. Dont try the beef and chicken roll. You will thank me. I know all inclusive is roughly $100 extra per person, per day, but stay away from it. We took the bus ($1/person) down to the shopping area (La Isla) .. and ate at some local restaurants... for roughly $30 total for 2 people. All Inclusive is good if you drink alot of beer. Bot for food.. save yourself roughly $100 per person per night.. and head down the strip a few blocks and eat at the shopping centers/restaurants. The Good: Awesome hotel. Very clean. Staff was super nice and helpful. Scuba Diving practice in the pool was awesome. We would definitely go back, but not All Inclusive. There is no way we even ate or drank near the amount we paid... especially with all the restrictions ($6 room service delivery fee, extra $$$ for sashimi, etc..) Read more

The interior of the hotel is very pretty, with many private areas for meetings and to enjoy the ocean views. However, except for the rooms, the whole hotel's interior, including its lobby and hallways, does not have AC. I am an all-inclusive guest. And in case the hotel’s management does not realize it, all-inclusive also means INCLUDING air conditioning. […] How can one enjoy sitting at the bar or eating sushi at the sushi restaurant without air conditioning? It's ridiculous! Also, the hotel service staff, especially those that work in the restaurants and the lobby check-in/check-out areas are too aggressive in asking for tips. It makes the hotel looks and feels cheap. When I checked out and had already paid all my bill, with my black wrist band had already cut and was on my way out of the door walking toward the van, a bell hop came over insisted on helping me with my bags. I only had two bags so I did not think it was necessary. Besides, I was only few steps away from the van. But because he was so insistent in his asking I gave him one of my bags---a small backpack. As soon as he put it in the van, he asked me for the check-out slip, which I did not have. The check-out clerk forgot to provide me one. He actually told me that I could not leave the hotel without the check-out slip. He held up my van. What nerves. I don’t owe him or the hotel anything. How could he have the rights to hold up my van? He did not pay for the van. I did. He wanted the check-out slip so that he could collect tips, verifying that he had helped me with my luggage. Management needs to change this policy. You are management a beautiful 4/5 stars hotel, not some cheap motel in a sleazy neighborhood. Another thing that really, really bothered me during my stay was that anytime I asked for something to eat or drink anywhere--outside or inside--of the hotel I had to provide the waiter my room number. This was extremely annoying. The black band on my wrist should allow me the free-hassle service. Th Read more

This hotel is very pretty, private beach, several pools, the room was comfortable with a veranda overlooking either the ocean or lagoon. They charge for everything, including the use of the hotel minibar for personal items such as water - $10 USD per day but there is nothing that indicates there would be this added cost, no biggie if you knew it up […] front. We order the same item two days in a row by the pool side the price was different on both days which tells us that the waiter added a few extra pesos to the bill for himself. I don't like it when I do not have the control over what I want to give, when it is taken I find it offensive. There is alot of selling of their vacation club - too much selling. At the end they check your room to see what items were used in the mini-bar and they charged us for two waters when we only use one, the final straw to the all the little annoying things. Overall the hotel itself is a great location with even greater views; how you are treated is completely different, you feel taken at every turn and also feel like you are seeing as a sells target. Let me first start by saying that the hotel is very beautiful and it is pretty! The location and the room we stayed at was quite nice. However, here are the challenges. We are typically tolerant of many small petty things but these experiences must be noted and we've given our feedback to the manager but I can tell they are just going with their flow […] as best they can. We also want to say that most of the workers are very pleasant! 1. Check in took us 45 minutes! Two persons at the counter with two other person dealing with existing reservation issues and then there is the money exchange person who can only shell out $100-$200 max. There were at least 5 families on the line with two at the desk. We do not know what on earth these two were doing but it seems like they were solving some puzzle on the monitor. 2. Instead of selling timeshares, these 6- 12 persons should help out behind the checkin and checkout desks. 3. Room was great but like others who has complaint, there is this foul smell coming from the AC unit in the room. Bring your own air freshener! We had a leak coming from there. They fixed it the next day but the smell was even worse. 4. We did not choose the inclusive because of the what other wrote. Go next door to the Marriott and go for their Argentinian Steakhouse or Japanese Teppiyakki! You'll be happy you did. 5. Tour Booker. He will usually sell you the most expensive tour, first. Ask for options!!! We are sure we will not come back here! Read more

Not a bad hotel but not great either. Charge for everything they can make money on but little flexibility and service. We spent our last evening in the room waiting for the lights in the bathroom to be fixed and had to negotiate to at least get the breakfast the next morning for free. No apologies or offers from their side. In general the hotel needs […] some maintenance. Positive aspects are the nice and large pool and pool area as well as the spa, which is great. Also, the restaurants are very good. Read more

We stayed at the Gran Melia on my first visit to Cancun. We travel alot and so we may be a bit pickier than most about hotels. Our biggest complain is that the common areas in the hotel are not air conditioned and the hotel was expansive. Getting from one place to another required a bit of walk. And when its June in Mexico and not air conditioned, its […] uncomfortable. The room provided to us was wonderful b/c they overbooked and ended up having to put us in the Red Level of the hotel which is reserved for luxury guests. Our room had two separate bathrooms, a balcony, and a sitting room. The showers though were not the greatest, the water came out very forceful and if you have a sunburn in Mexico, its going to hurt! The pool area was very nice, but the service in getting drinks and food was sporadic. They didn't come around very often and when they did, they did not stop by to serve everyone. You have to hunt down the waiter to get served. The overall customer service was not the greatest. They were slow and sometimes will stop what they're doing for you to have a full conversation with another employee. The spa was a bit overpriced and we ended up booking services at the Meridien instead. (The massage at the Meridien was one of the best I've ever had). Overall, the hotel was nice and comfortable, but we will probably stay at the JW Marriott the next time we go to Cancun. Read more

Beautiful modernistic hotel, but difficult to navigate and in disrepair. The hotel was not full by any means and I was placed in a dungeon on the ground floor to get there was like walking through a dark cave. I get in the front door and the lights don't work so I use my cell phone to light my way to the phone to call the front desk. The power gets […] turned on. Then no hot water. Another call this gets fixed. The later I go out then I find out I didn't need my key the door had never locked and still didn't at 10pm they are working on my door so I can sleep with some security. First time in Cancun, so we went with All Inclusive to make things easier. You do get a lot, but there's A LOT you don't get. Be sure and read every little sign and placard lying around and even then you better ask to be sure or you'll end up with an extra $100 plus in charges when you check out. We also had them try and put us in a lesser room than […] what we had reserved. (Lagoon view instead of Ocean view). They quickly resolved that issue, however. We ended up in a Red Level Junior Suite which was nice since that gave us access to all the private areas. Staff was nice and very accommodating, but, of course, they expect a tip every time. Beach and pools are beautiful, hotel is just a bit too big for our taste. It's my understanding there are others hotels in the area with All Inclusive that truly is All Inclusive, so I'd recommend checking them out if that's what you're looking for. Read more

They have a program called "Programa Más" where they try to sell you the hotel in a very uncovenienty manner. The room had a lot of things (window/sink) broken, lacking maintenance.

I've traveled all over the tropics & this is my 3rd time to Mexico. The hotel wasn't aweful, it certainly didn't impress me. The customer service was less than desireable. We changed rooms within 10 minutes of being in our first 1 because all of the lamps were broken (light bulbs dangling) & the patio furniture was ripped and unusable. Our 2nd room […] was on the lowest level of the hotel so we had a view of the ground and employee parking lot instead of the deluxe Lagoon view that we paid for. When we put the do not distrube sign on our door to take a nap, they called and woke us up to see if we wanted our room cleaned. We opted for all inclusive, which was more of a hassle than it was worth. All inclusive guests have to sign for every meal, every drink, every thing. The buffet for lunch & dinner was aweful. All of the food was luke warm at best whether it was supposed to be hot or cold. The options on the buffet would have been good if the food was hot. I would suggest that the hotel post it's menus online so that people can review them before deciding to go all-inclusive. The restaurants had menu options that were for an experienced pallet and didn't sound very appetizing to the everyday traveler. One option was baby goat with cricket butter. Also, the mini fridge in the rooms are to be used only for hotel issued beverages otherwise there is a daily rental charge, which is not disclosed unless you read the information that is in your hotel room. Not impressed. Read more

well, it all started with checking in, we had 5 rooms (10) people, we all where told our air conditioner where all down, we found out later they over booked. they told us to come back the next day around 9am & noon, we didn't get our rooms till 4pm the nexst day. wrong rooms then what we booked, but did have ocean view, so we settled, we where suppose […] to have a king suit, but got 2 queen bed suit?? the hotel overall is too big, service wasn't the greatess, all the same food, we had to after 4 days get a PaPa John's pizza across the street from hotel. no enteraintment at the pool during the day, some music if you where on the beach , but the same beat all week long. weather was great, hot. but I would stay in a smaller hotel. didn;t feel comfortable walkin around in the bikni through the hotel to get to our rooms. This hotel, location and beach are BEAUTUFUL .Staff was WONDERFUL and seemed caring & attentive. Get to the beach/ poolside by 6 am to secure a spot in the shade. Food was better than most all inclusives. The BUT comes in here. We had ALL-INCULSIVE, BUT,not everyone does, so you have to be careful. We were able to get dinner reser. before leaving home […] for the 2 exclusive resturants. BUT, All inclusive does NOT include the wine list (over 100$ for a California middle of the road bottle of wine). No ONE or THING indicates this to you. It seemed ludicrous when you think of all the liqour being poured all day. A bottle of wine is a spit in the ocean. The honor bar in our room had only items that were incl. Water, beer, soda. Other guests had more items & it cost them. Note: I did not say COFFEE. We made coffee 3 times to the tune of 3ish $/ pot. charged at check out. Not a ton of $, but kinda left a sour taste in our mouths when they wanted more $ as we left for the airport. Bring a cable if you want in room internet. Nightlife is LACKING! Big time! Go across the street to get things like sunblock. Hotel Market charges a huge mark up on spray sunblock. All in all we had a wonderful time. Relaxed and took in the beautiful weather and ocean. Not a lot of spring breakers at all. It is family friendly, if you are looking for that. I would go back, but only if EVERYONE was all inclusive. Read more

We stayed at Gran Melia March 2011. Upon check-in we were disappointed to learn that we were being placed in a double rm instead of a king, which we had reserved 4 months in advance. We booked the all-inclusive pkg which they clearly explained all inclusions upon check-in. After C/I we were greeted by hotel personnel who claimed to be there to familiarize […] us with the resort, this turned out to be a BIG pitch to push attendance to their time-share info mtg- which we declined. Aside from that the hotel was beautiful, the rooms were clean, the pools and beach area were well maintained and very luxurious. The beds in our room however felt like 20yo mattresses...very uncomfortable. The restaurants were all by reservation only and were booked pretty solid so you really had to plan in advance, or you could hit the buffett easily. The food was good, not great. I didnt have a bad meal there but nothing memorable either. The bars were understaffed so the wait time was a little long. All the pool area bars closed at 5, leaving one bar open inside for the rest of the night. I was pleased with the hotel overall and would probably stay again. But I wanted to point the pro's & cons so you know what to expect. Read more
