Beach was beautiful, food was great, service was perfect. Everyone at the resort was friendly. There was only few minor problems. We had mosquito in the room and it was hard to get rid of. The staff, for the most part, are unpleasant. The hotel itself and the amenities are awesome. The area around the hotel is very unpleasant, so don't think you can go for a walk outside of the guarded gates. The food, drinks, and activities inside the resort are awesome, however. 30th Wedding Anniversary. First trip to Jamaica. Weather was ideal (December 7-11). Warm sunny days. Not at full occupancy. Plenty of beach and pool lounge chairs and umbrellas. Attentive staff everywhere. Beaches were clean white sand. Rather than one long beach, it was broken up by sea walls and barriers - so it was no possible to have a long "beach […] stroll". Not a problem - you could stroll the entire length of the resort on the sidewalk that separated the pool/hotel/restaurant side of the resort with all the beaches. As with all Secret locations, the non-motorized water sports were free. The snorkeling right off the beach was average / snorkeling out in the reef area was nice in the mornings (no waves at all - smooth as glass and effortless). The Hobie sails (four of them) were available every time I wanted to take one out. The water was beautiful and warm - hung out for hours in the water - would've liked something to float on out in that calm water - would've spent all day out there! Restaurants offered decent (typical all-inclusive type) buffets for breakfast and lunch. Dinner was best at the hibachi Japanese restaurant. Wanted to participate in the hibachi experience, but they were way overboard on entertaining for my style (loud singing - and it wasn't even good singing). My wife and I found it very difficult to even sit in the other part of the restaurant and enjoy a meal. Best lunch is Jerk Chicken - get it from the cart...it's great! Read more

Amazing staff working 24 hours a day to please their guests. Entertainment was more than adequate, lots of stuff to do and a great tour staff to guide you with off-resort trips. Great stay overall. Most bars closed early though, which was disappointing. Mini fridges weren't very cold, and the beaches were smaller than expected.

Great time overall! But the toilet kept clogging (British low flow fixtures are not accustomed to Americans apparently); however the maintenance man came within 15 minutes to fix the problem. The beach is certainly the highlight; beach snacks (carts, cafes, and drinks) were terrific. We were a little disappointed with the El Patio restaurant (tiny portions […] and annoyed waitress, slow service there). The Portfofino and Himitsu restaurants were great though! Also, the Jamaican restuarant there (Blue Mountain) was a nice surprise and we were very impressed. This made up for the attidunal waitress who talked back to me a few times at the EL Patio restaurant. I asked for a menu near dessert time and she panicked and refused to bring me one. She thought I was checking on her to see if she got the order right. She actually got confrontational with me which was so uncomfortable. I didnt bother calling a manager since it's an all-inclusive resort. We simply left and didnt go back to that restaurant. Overall we cannot wait to go back to the resort and always enjoy the SECRETS resorts' experience. Just VERY relaxing- more for couples; definitely not singles. Well first off let me start off by saying I did a lot of looking before I found the right hotel. I travel quite a bit but this is my first tropical vacation. The check in process was dreadful I though, make sure you have printed off something from Expedia that says your full itinary as well as your names. We were traveling as two friends and had two double beds. The bathroom has frosted glass doors on the shower and the toilet however there was only a sheer curtain separating my bed from the bathtub and the bathroom. For a couple this could be alright, for friends no. Also as a younger person we expected to see more younger people with weddings and such, no not really! Basically is is a romantic couples resort. The room service menu is tiny to say the least. There is only one restaurant open for breakfast, and it's the only one open for lunch besides the bars. So you get tired of it. My wife and I just got back from Secrets (8/26/12). Secrets St. James and Secrets Wild Orchid are essentially the same resort with really the only difference being that Wild Orchid has some different types of rooms available and Wild Orchid costs a bit more. But, to be clear, no matter which you stay at, you have full use of either building's amenities, […] pools, beaches, entertainment, etc. We had requested our Junior Suite Ocean View room to be on the 4th or 5th floor when booking with Expedia and again when we arrived. Our request was accomodated and we had a room on the 5th floor overlooking the pool and ocen. Lower level rooms will be very close to the pool area and not very private with less of an ocean view. The room was very nice with a modern motif. It was one of the nicest rooms we've stayed in and we have traveled to resorts in many tropical locations. The housekeeping staff had our room made up every day between 10AM and noon and were there each evening with turndown service. The various restaruants povided very good (not outstanding) food and service, but the breakfast buffet at the World Cafe' was very enjoyable and had a great variety. Read more

For an affordable luxury resort in Jamaica, Secrets St. James was very nice. There are many restaurants to choose from of various varities of food. The staff is incredibly friendly as well - even more so if you tip them. The room was very nice and we couldn't have asked for a better room. There is no need to upgrade it to a suite. We did upgrade to […] the Preferred club and it was nice, but I'm not sure that it is necessary. The best part about the preferred room is that you get to use the preferred pools which are much better than the others because they were not crowded at all. If you are a big partier, then you want the regular pools. There are lots of activities to do, only some of which you have to pay extra for. The wifi is a joke and does not work at all. So, if you want internet you should get the preferred club so you can use their computers. The food was the only real downside to the resort. It was just OK, but I didn't expect it to be wonderful in Jamaica anyway, but it certainly wasn't too bad. The room service was only really good for breakfast...every other meal (even with the preferred club menu) was quite bad. The room service was also quite slow getting to your room. The drinks were outstanding - they have top shelf liquor and will make you anything. They will also continually refill your drinks and take new orders on the beach or at the pool. The Good: The hotel is gorgeous, and adults only so no screaming children running around. Every room is an ocean view room (tho some more than others). The food is pretty good if you know where to eat and where not to eat (Bordeax, Himitsu and El Patio were the best for din, since Oceana and Seaside were always closed for din I cant rate them), Oceana […] and Seaside for lunch and Buffet for breakfast (not that u have much of a choice). If you like noise and party atmosphere stay at the regular side, if you want quiet go to preferred. The rooms are very nice and clean and soaking tub on balcony in preferred rooms is an added bonus. People are pretty friendly (sometimes a little too much, sorry i didnt come on vacation to chat with you about your life Mon!) The Bad: The beach while very pretty in theory in reality will dissapoint, very shallow and after getting in about knee deep you'll hit rocks and seaweed, the preferred side beaches are much nicer than regular side but still not very good. Also beach chairs crazy uncomfortable (wicker...really?) the drinks while deelish are totally watered down (4 mojitos later and i wasnt even tipsy and im a lightweight). Why was Oceana and Seaside always closed for dinner? And whats up with the lack of fruit in a tropical resort? Not cool! We had an excellent experience with the hotel. The hotel staff were extremely friendly, the hotel was very well maintained. The food was varied but a little bland, with the exception of the jerk chicken stand at lunch - outstanding! We stayed for four nights, and could have happily stayed for another couple. There were some very nice touches at the […] hotel, with a mojito stand, and a guy cracking coconuts for drinks. The location is beautiful, but it is isolated, and a $60 return taxi ride to Montego Bay (just 15/20 minutes away). No problem for a short stay, but if you're there for an extended period, that could be an issue. Some of the clubs/bars did provide free buses to get there and back however in the evening. Suprisingly, the wood carving stand at the hotel gave even better deals that the straw market we went to. If you do go to the straw market, be prepared, it's the most harrassed we've ever been at any market...just madness. Note to future visitiors - wait till you get to the airport to buy your rum, it's much cheaper there. We went on an organised 3 stop shopping tour to Montego bay as it was cheaper to do this than get a cab, and whilst the coffee and t-shirts were a good price, the rum was vastly overpriced. (Appleton 12 yr old 750ml - on the shelf at $48, they gave us a "deal" at $36, however $19 on the shelf at the airport.....ouch!). Read more

Overall, very nice place. Some people get talked into or reserved Preferred status. Not worth it - I'd rather put the money towards another vacation. Be ready for the "hard sell" when you arrive for that upgrade, and a couple of other things...after that, they don't bother you. We reserved St. James room, got upgraded to Wild Orchid room. Not much difference. […] Wild Orchid side a little closer to things, but really no difference. Employees are extraordinarily nice. Room very comfortable, great bed, pillows, and room darkening shades so you can sleep late if you so desire. Food at some restaurants better than others. Our worst meal was at the French restaurant, Bordeaux, which, surprisingly, had the longest wait time. Breakfast and lunch buffets at World Cafe very good. Beach is nice, though difficult to get a lounge chair in the shade - people "reserve" early. Same is true for pools. Liquor is plentiful if you're a drinker. Lots of activities to do during the day - line dancing, cooking class, crafts. If you're active, there are exercise classes (zumba yoga); fitness center adequate; one tennis court, one basketball court, and path around the place where you can run, power walk etc. There are some motor and non-motor water activities; some cost, some don't. Never made it to the spa, but there is one. Night entertainment was good for the first 3 days of our 6 day stay, but went downhill the last few nights (silly game show, bad talent show, Mardi Gras party). Read more

We just got the normal package... didn't pay any extra and it was a great view. The best we've had in Jamaica. The soaking tub was great, as was the squishy bed and rain shower. The toilet area is odd and we didn't like it. It is by itself with a see-through door. Check in: This was the worst! Not enough workers, crowded, no welcome drink or cold towel. We did not receive any wash cloths until later in the day after we had showered. The beach was well kept and the activities were adequate. One had a swim-up bar and was a little too noisy for us with the loud drinkers and music. So, we just went over to the infinity side of the pool and it was so relaxing! Steps away from the pool is the beach. The beach was great too! There were no rocks - no need for water shoes. Water was so clear! White sand which was very clean. As for the service, everyone was extremely friendly. Service was on the slow side, but we expected that since it is Jamaica. Overall we very much enjoyed our stay. It's just what we were looking for. I went to secrets to get married and honeymoon. The staff that checked us in and all of the wedding staff were above excellent. The place is beautiful. The beds are super comfortable and the room stays cool. IF you keep you balcony door closed fully. The rooms have sensors to determine if you are in them or not and if the door is not closed. Either […] cause the a/c to cut off. Which no one told us so we had one hot night and complained only for the maitenance staff to come lock the balcony and air started working immeditately. I felt someone should have told me that. Preferred was great because it provided interesting snack foods all day long. The only problem was they seemed to only have the local beer and a few miller lights. Not what i thought. However, red stripe light was fine as it turns out. The restaurants were adequate. The only major complaint was at the french restaurant bordeaux. What food we got was great. But after 2 hours and no main course we left. A lot of other people left before us and the waitress was rude. We only tipped at the chinese and italian restaurants for excellent service and a bar or two. Maybe 30 bucks for our whole 5 day trip. They never asked for a tip. Not once! We got the same great service we were expecting. Very short ride from the airport and the place is very secure and beautiful on the end of an island. Sandals doesn't do that. The spa was spectacular - get a tretment and avoid the $55 to use the facilities which are greatl but included if you have a treatment. Different bars had various levels of alcohol - the pool bar had the worst selection - all bar brands, but some of the bars had top shelf, you just had to explore. Some of the bars by the beach even had swings to sit on instead of stools, fun! The breakfast buffet is great! The lunch options are fun - the beach restaurants, the burger or pizza or jerk chicken carts along the beach were all so good that I never made it to the lunch buffet. Resort is beautiful, I thought it was very well laid out. It's a large place but still make you feel intimate. To get there...we went through some rough looking neighborhood. that did not make me feel good. Especially the road from Free port to the resort was littered with garbage and no street lights. There was no sign of f road beautification and […] safety. That probably is Jamaican government 's resposibility and that shows there attitude towards their most important industry.'tourism'. I don't know if I want to go back to Jamaica when they are not interested in improving themselves to show how beautiful their country can be..pitty!!! Food.. Restaurants have very limited menu available. Japanese restaurant was so loud we couldn't even carry a conversation while we were having a meal. Buffet was better than some of the resort we have been . It was not big but food was well prepared. Room service was good but they also have very limited menu..Hamburgers, hotdogs and pizza. No Jamaican food or nice dinner items were offered. Service was very good . Everybody seemed to be very helpful and happy. Resort management tried hard to entertain people when weather was bad. If I ever go back to Jamaica I think I will enjoy resorts at Golden miles. St. James was a great resort but could be better if they can imoprove their surroundings and food. Read more

The hotel is a short drive from the airport, and sits in a fairly commercial area. We did a bike ride one day in the neighborhood, and it's not much to look at. However, the resort itself is beautiful - we were quite happy to stay within the confines of the resort for 9 days, but it would have been great to be able to walk into town to shop or whatever […] (it was both too far away and not particularly attractive or safe to do so). The first room we had was not what we reserved (ocean view), but after I lost my temper at the front desk staff they eventually moved us (after two days) to a gorgeous room with an ocean view. One thing to remember is that you are in the Carribbean, and the pace is slower. Service is slow, but competent and very friendly. After a couple days, you get used to the pace. The food was good - we liked the Italian and Jamaican places best I think. The views are gorgeous, and the Hobie sailing extremely fun, as was the snorkeling (all right at the hotel). Weather was perfect - 82, sunny, relatively low humidity (November), and only about 10 minutes of rain in 9 days. The sing-a-long piano bar was fun (Andre the piano man is very talented), as long as the super drunk people didn't take over and feel the need to scream instead of sing. We only wished that ran longer than 45 minutes or an hour. Overall a great vacation...extremely relaxing. We would go back, but next time may try another Secrets property - DR was recommended by several guests. Read more

If you're in your late 20's and older or you're looking for a romantic place to spend with your significant other, I highly recommend Secrets. The rooms are comfy/cozy and the decor was pleasing to the eye. We were greeted upon arrival with champagne (nice :) ) Also, I live in New York... city of diverse people and food choices. I've probably had almost every cuisine possible. Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed in the food at the resort with the exception of the tepanyaki (delicious!) Nothing was bad but each restaurant had few choices and I did not leave amazed. All of the desserts looked exactly the same and were not appetizing at all! I'm a tough critic though so try it for yourself. If you're not used to the food, you may enjoy it. I think it lacks some authenticity because of tourists. I'm sure others loved it. We had a fantastic time at Secrets St. James, but there were definitely some kinks that the resort needs to work out. The construction isn't great, and the resort isn't handling the seasonal rainfall well. The pool, beach and watersports staff/activities are the highlights of the resort. We enjoyed the food, and the staff was very kind.

We loved the resort!!! It was only about 20 minutes from the airport, so you don't get stuck in a van/taxi for the first 2 hours of your trip!!! The St. James and the Wild Orchid are on the same property, so you have access to both resorts. Don't bother spending the extra cash for the preferred areas because you can go in and out of the lobbies and […] use everything even if your not staying in those sections (internet, even better alcohol choices, etc) The 3am room service was awesome!!! We would be out until 2 at the Desires Nightclub and it was nice to be able to come back and get some decent food. The resort has an "entertainment crew" which has fun activities going on all day and great shows at night. I was concerned about the limited dinner menus, but everything we had was excellent at each of the restaurants we visited. Also, the resort wasn't very busy so service was always top-notch!!!
