San Marco (St Mark’s) is quintessential visitors’ Venice. The Piazza San Marco, famous for its pigeons, campanile, basilica, Palazzo Ducale (Doge’s Palace) and expensive cafes, is unmissable. The waterfront views are legendary and more gondolas depart from here than anywhere else in the city. In season the Piazza teems with day trippers though just a block or two away streets are quiet and offer more museums and palaces to explore.

Loved everything about this hotel except for the shabby condition of the building. Our room had paint flakes falling from the bathroom ceiling continuously and the wooden floor tiles kept coming up. Otherwise, service, staff, breakfast, etc., all terrific.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"PAY YOUR ROOM BEFORE YOU GET THERE!"
The hotel is excellent! Unfortunately, the staff is a snobbish! If you arrive without at least a reservation, they will tell you they have no rooms. The main reason is they keep their best rooms for the highest bidder on weekends because it is their busiest days. They told me they didn't have a room but I used their lobby Wi-Fi and through hotels.com […] booked a room right their in front of their own eyes! I got the best room of the hotel! We were 3 guests in a room that would comfortably fit 7! The staff was effective and immediate after this impasse. The hotel is beautiful and breakfast is a delight! "perfect for a single traveler"
I booked this hotel very last minute in Sep. It had such bad reviews that I was worried, but there were not many choices left. I was not disappointed: the location is superb. I liked the overall feel and consistency of the decor, including the keys. I lived in Room 602, basically at the attic. However, I could see the tallest bell tower on St. Marco […] Square from my window. How could I complain? I am a single skinny traveler. The beds are basically two separate narrow cots. I did not mind, but if you're a couple on a honeymoon, this will not be your ideal room. Everything is very clean. According to some reviews, the rooms on lower floors are better; however, they are not free to upgrade. They cost extra. The buffet breakfast in the hotel cost EUR 15. It was worth it to give me freedom to get full before a few hours of walking. It tasted good, too. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Not fancy, but a nice place to stay for a few nigh"
The hotel is clean and convenient to St Mark's Plaza (It is trhough the Plaza and over one bridge# where the water taxi dropped us off and where the Vaporetto #public transportation# also stops. It is not a Hilton five star hotel, but it is clean and the staff is great. They answered all our questions, went on line to get our boarding passes, and did […] everything to make sure we were happy. St Mark's' plaza was flooded #It is that time of year when rain and high tides invade the area # so they gave us directions to eating places and methods to get around without having to buy boots or suffer wet feet and clothes. The breakfast of ometlet type eggs, bacon, a multitude of breads#Bagels, couisants, rolls, etc# cerals, and a machine that provide coffee, latte, capaccino, and expresso, was more than adequate. We would stay there again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Location is Important"
Was a delightful stay. Close to everything we wanted to see. However, price is high. The breakfast is expensive at $15 euro/person but typical European style. You could stay another 2 blocks away and likely save $100 euros over a three day period. Great staff.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Excellent location, small room, decent place."
The location of this hotel is excellent, a few meters away from San Marco square. I got a small room on the 6th floor, but it was never mentioned to me in the reservation that the elevator only gets to the 4th floor. You pay 50 Euros for internet for the week and the wi-fi connection is very weak at times and sometimes non-existent. The bathroom was […] always super clean. The TV had two channels in English (CNN and BBC). The staff was nice and spoke English. They wanted to charge me for phone calls that I never made, but removed the charges from my bill after I pointed that out. I thought that I had paid all charges to Expedia, but at the end they charged me 4 Euros per day for city taxes. The bathroom had a shower curtain and good ventilation. "A hotel to stay."
I was fascinated by the cozy outlook in the room but other than a hard bed mattress, everything else was in place as a hotel room. This room is only fit for a single or couple travellers. Hotel located very near to any main centre of attraction in Venice. The staff are definitely helpful.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great location, great hotel"
We really enjoyed our stay here. The location was great, right near Piazza San Marco, and the hotel was clean and well-appointed. Staff was also very friendly and helpful, and spoke English. One tip, take a good look at a map before heading there as we had a little trouble finding it at first.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not so four star - especially the 2nd floor"
I don't know how this hotel gets a 4 star rating. I had a single room on the second floor - red carpet was old and had small stains and rip. Curtains didn't look washed for a long time - just in general disappointing. I complained and got upgraded to the first floor. Major difference between the two floors - this room was more in line with what's on […] their website. Very clean, nicely decorated, great bathroom. Breakfast for a four star hotel disappointing. I don't expect coffee from a coffee machine. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Perhaps the best in Venice!"
The location of the hotel is remarkable - maybe 50 meters from San Marco square! We selected this hotel for the nightly rate, but I believe it is as good as any I good have found in Venice at any rate. The staff were very friendly and ever so helpful, even assisting us with finding tours and transportation to other islands, etc. The room was admitedly […] small, even by European standards at about 3.6 by 3.6 meters (12x12 feet) plus a small bathroom, and was furnished with a queen size bed, 2 nightstands and a wardrobe. Our room overlooked a canal and the restaurant on the other side. The room was very clean and comfortable, although the bathroom shower was a bit small at about 0.6 meters square (about 2x2 feet), and even with the shower curtain it was hard to shower without getting water all over the bathroom. The weather was unusually hot for Venice during our stay, but the air conditioning in the room was the best I have ever found in Europe. The hotel is about a 5 minute walk from the nearest water-bus stop (Piazza San Marco), and if you use a luggage porter it doesn't get any easier. The area is full of great little Venitian shops and restaurants, and is about a 5 minute walk from Rialto Bridge and the Grand Canal. We did not eat at the hotel, but breakfast was offered, and the hotel also has 2 restaurants. I would absolutely recommend this hotel, and would definately stay here again. "Location is fantastic. Privacy lacking."
The hotel location is it's best feature. It is 1 1/2 blocks from St. Marks square. The hotel was clean and the staff was very nice. The Expedia reservation was received and very efficient. The room was small and the shower was difficult but manageable. Our biggest complaint was the noise level. We could hear everything going on around us. I am certain […] they could hear us as well. Every door opening and closing. Every conversation and the TV could be heard clearly. From our perspective, we are glad we went, but may spend a little more next time and hope for more privacy. . the hotel was just off of san marco which was amazing. however, there was not much else exceptional about this hotel. the front desk and bell hop service was not very helpful. the room was also uncomfortable and seemed cluttered with old and useless furniture. i also had difficulty finding the hotel because the road name i was given did not match the […] road it was actually located on. "Barely 2-Star Hotel with Cramped, Shoddy Rooms, Soiled Linens in the Hallways, and Inoperative WiFi"
First, THE GOOD: The one & only good thing we can say about the Royal San Marco is its location. It is only ~70 steps to the Plaza San Marco. Now, THE BAD: The hotel is billed as 4-Star, which we found true … BUT only for the 1st Floor. The 1st Floor has beautiful suites, with upholstered walls and well-kept hallways. But the rest of the hotel’s floors […] have very small & cramped rooms, with shoddy furnishings, scuffed old paint, and industrial hallways. By American standards the hotel is barely 2-Star. Finally, THE UGLY: The following is just a sampling our problems of our stay in a 3rd Floor room: Terrible cleaning: The cleaning staff routinely left large laundry bags in the hallways, with soiled, smelling linens spewing out. Every morning & evening, we had to step around these bags to get to our room. Noise problems: Sounds carry easily through the walls. And every morning we awoke to the banging of the water pipes when our neighbors showered. Bad showers: Shower temperature varied greatly, scalding you one minute and freezing you the next. And if we took a late shower, we were lucky to have any hot water at all. Inoperative In-Room WiFi: WiFi apparently does not work in most rooms. In-room WiFi worked only for our friends on the 1st Floor, but not the rest of our group on Floors 2 and higher. Poor Breakfast: Although the complimentary breakfast runs until 10:30am, we did not see it restocked after about 9:45am. Around 10/10:15am it usually ran out of food. "Royal San Marco Hotel in San Marco, Venice"
The key for this hotel is the location. It is just off the Piazza di San Marco, which makes it easy to find, even in a city as labyrinthine as Venice. Like many city based hotels, the rooms were incredibly small. The room itself consisted of enough space for the bed and a single dresser-type piece of furniture. The bed was a little on the firm side, […] and our pillows were about the consistancy of rocks. The bathroom was fine, but the shower was a little claustrophobic, though it wouldn't surprise me if this was the norm. The breakfast was very good, consisting mostly of pastries, with some cereal options and slices of meats. The room was largely worth the price because of the convenience of the location. We weren't visiting Venice to stay in the room, so its small size wasn't that much of a detriment. It's location is a short walk from the Alilaguna stop at San Marco, which has a direct line from the port and the airport. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Royal san marco hotel for valentine's celebration"
A hop literally away from Piazza San Marco. I stayed 3 days during carnaval week on tuesday, wednesday and thursday...their week-end rates I found were overpriced. Pleasant in all regards, adequate breakfast and if Piazza san Marco is where all-day activities abound during carnaval week...that is the place to be!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

This hotel was well located however the staff weren't very friendly and the room nothing like the pictures on the website with paper thin Walls. I have stayed in Venice a lot over a number of years and I have stayed in much better for less money. The lobby was very nice and the hotel right at San marco so the location is good for a short stay.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Perfect location"
This was our 3rd visit to this hotel and our return there is based on the location which is only yards away from St Mark's Square. Our room was small but adequate as you are out sightseeing most of the time and whilst not luxurious it was kept spotless and the decor was typically Venetian. Unfortunately there was only an internal view of various roofs […] from the window, but the bells of the Campanile could be heard if not seen as we have on previous stays at other hotels. We were not offered any option when booking for view, nor was there any option for breakfast, only room and when we enquired at reception on arrival, it was going to cost another €30 per day for the two of us, so we declined. This was a compromise I would not make again as it being Venice, we spent almost as much as the hotel quoted by going to nearby cafes for a croissant and coffee until on our last day we went into a nearby sandwich bar/delicatessen and had croissant and coffee for €7! We would go back to this hotel but would ensure that it was b&b and also enquire about a room with a view, but with everything being so expensive, the latter might not be an option. "Royal San Marco - prime location"
The hotel's main selling point is that it is situated about 30 metres from the Piazza San Marco and an easy ten minute's walk from the Rialto. The reception staff all speak very good English and probably also French, German and Spanish (although they were quite happy to let me use my far from fluent Italian!) and were quick to help with any queries […] and requests. The rooms are quite small, but they were equipped with everything one needed and I found the bed very comfortable. The bathroom was good and there was ample wardrobe and drawer space, a safe and a minibar. There was no noise at night. The breakfast room was pleasant, although rather cramped and the buffet was fine, albeit more to European tastes, with a good selection of cereals, fruit salad, yoghurts, ham, salami and cheese, croissants and sweet buns and just a small choice of omelettes and bacon for those who want a hot breakfast. Coffee was nice. The Royal San Marco is perhaps not ideal for those who wish to spend a lot of time in their room, but it is unlikely that a visitor to Venice would want to! I found it very convenient for arrival and departure (Vaparetto, Alilaguna boats and water taxis are no more than 200 metres away) and it was quite exhilarating to step out of the hotel and be on one of the most iconic piazzas in the world in a couple of steps. There is a pleasant bar and a nice restaurant onsite. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Royal San Marco Hotel - Venice"
The hotel was in a lovely location however with high tide in Venice it proved to difficult to make our way to the hotel from the Canal after being dropped of by our water taxi. Furthermore the room we were given was probably the smallest we have ever had in the many years we have been travelling and also one of the most expensive. The breakfast area […] was quite small and it was a bit busy and slow to get food with no glasses and shortage of breakfast food for long periods. Great position right at St Marcs Square but too pricey for the room we got. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
