A heart-shaped ring road defines Brussels’ city core, and most of its visitor attractions. Within these limits, the centre consists of two distinct halves. To the west is the Lower Town, a tangle of medieval streets centred on the Grand Place, a vast cobbled square surrounded by ornate Flemish buildings. To the east is the newer and more aristocratic Upper Town, a zone of palaces and parks, grand museums, and gothic churches.

I have always wanted to stay at the Metropol, but it was always too expensive. I ran across a good rate on hotels.com and booked the Metropol for 4 nights. The location is good, and the lobby and bar area are just beautiful. This is where the five star rating ends. My room was very long in the tooth, hot, and very uncomfortable. I asked the hotel staff […] on 2 occasions to look at the AC, but the room never got cooler. I had to try to sleep with the windows open, then it was noisy. I will not stay here again. "very well located - close to Metro, Grand Place"
It's a lovely hotel in a lovely city. I had stayed at the hotel in 1951 as a young child and remembered it as very lovely. It still is - like a grand old dame. It is beautifully maintained and everything is impeccable.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Outdated hotel with disappointing service"
The gorgeous lobby and good location does not make up for the lack in hotel quality and service. Our main problems were with the elevator and balcony door in our bedroom. Elevator - The extremely old, small, and non-automatic doors made it very difficult for us to bring our 3 suitcases up to our bedroom. I cannot believe a 5-star hotel would have such […] an inconvenient elevator system for its guests. While a member of the staff saw us struggling for a while, nobody offered to help us carry our luggage to our room. Balcony door - While the French doors looked nice, they blew open several times in the middle of the night even after we tried locking it. This made our room freezing (the heater barely seemed to work in the first place) and we had a lot of trouble sleeping. I mentioned this to the staff during check-out and all I received back was "oh, we'll check on that - which room?". Very disappointing service again from a highly rated hotel. Yes, the price is cheap for a 5-star hotel and the location is quite good. I also hear the hotel restaurants are pretty tasty as well. However, I would not recommend this hotel because of the issues we had mentioned above. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
Unsatisfactory room internet service; did not work, and if it had, too slow. Business office unsatisfactory alternative -- non-QARTY keyboard unusable . Requested hotel cab service to airport; told fare would be 45 euro; cabbie charged 55 euro.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location and service, rooms needs updating"
The service was very good and the staff very friendly, also we got our car valet parked but we didn't get charged for it since the car stayed upfront. The location is great, right close to the main shopping street, across the street from the movie theater and just a five-minute walk to all the attractions like Grand-Place.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"DO NOT STAY HERE"
While the hotel lobby and entrance lives up to the pictures online the rooms are extremely outdated and down right creepy. We checked in at 6pm, I immediately called Hotels.com to inquire about a full refund and moving to a new hotel. While they were able to refund the remaining days I still had to pay for the first night. The hotel was so unsettling […] that we ate the one night charge and moved to another hotel. I was fully checked out by 7pm that same night. Overall look and feel reminded me of Cabin in the Woods and The Shining. No thank you! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Highly Recommend Metropole"
I was very pleased with all aspects of the Metropole. I had read some reviews that warned of outdated rooms, rude staff and faulty elevator that frankly had me a little concerned. I saw none of that at the Metropole. It was my first time to Brussels and the staff helped me out with the many questions I had, were attentive and very fast with service […] requests. Room was very nice and well attended to. The location was also fantastic, very close to the underground and shopping/restaurant district. I would recommend the Metropole to my friends and family, and have. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Beautiful hotel!"
The hotel is very old and has maintained it's glory. The room was quite nice and clean. The hotel staff was very polite and helpful. Our only complaint was the non price listing of the breakfast buffet. We looked everywhere for it but decided to eat there nonetheless because of our wanting to have enough time to eat and get to the train station. When […] we found out the cost, we were a bit shocked ---56 euros for 2 people! At least the fod was good. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"A Disappointment"
The lobby is gorgeous. The rest of the enterprise has not yet got it all together. Our rooms were hot (in October) and the staff admitted the air-conditioning was not working properly. Open windows meant street noise. The staff was friendly, helpful on occasion. But the building needs work and even a good staff can't help that. A decent elevator would […] help--the antique lift off the lobby belongs in a museum. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Stunning Metropole"
The Metropole hotel was lovely. The service was more then good. However, it needs a moderate makeover: fresh coat of paint and new rugs. We did not understand about the Internet and its different speeds. I think, this is the Metropole, so internet should be free. It downgrades the hotel. We should have been advised when we registered. "Would like to return someday."
Based on the great Expedia rate we received at this hotel, we thought we might get a closet. We actually received beautiful, spacious rooms. As in the other reviews, the elevator broke down and we had to be rescued, but it wasn't a real issue since we were "rescued" in a short amount of time. Our two rooms were spotless and comfortable. Unfortunately, […] one of our rooms smelled like something died in it. The hotel couldn't resolve the issue, so we shut off the air and opened the window. The hotel staff was otherwise very helpful and full of recommendations. We would love to return to this hotel if we make it to Brussels again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Near a good restaurant area"
Enjoyed it much. The room was rather poky, especially considering the price, and the "view" of a roof and a wall was horrible. But the internet worked fine, the desk people and concierges were very helpful and kind. They suggested we email our boarding pass to them, and they printed it out and delivered it to us. If breakfast had only been included. […] . . Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"A historical excursion..."
While booking a trip to a weekend meeting in Brussels, I discovered what an excellent deal the Metropole is after the eurocrats go home. As an astrophysicist, I immediately leapt at the chance to stay at this historical hotel that played host some of the most important physics conferences of the 20th century. While I certainly got a liberal dose of […] history, the excellent upkeep of the hotel and its 21st century amenities were a pleasant surprise. For the rock-bottom weekend rates, you would hard-pressed to find more luxurious accommodations in Europe or even North America. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

The Metropole was lovely and in a great location. So easy to get to a Metro station and go anywhere in Brussels. The hotel staff was friendly and very helpful. Breakfast at the hotel was superb. Again the staff made the experience memorable.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Looks nice but offers poor value"
This is a magnificent hotel from a bygone era. Ornate and oppulent in the lobby. However, the trouble starts soon. The lift has been broken a long time. You must ride another lift to a floor above yours, and then go down stairs and navigate a labyrinth of halls to your room. This borders on ridiculous for a first class hotel. The room has a tv that […] matches the decor, antique. The old small tube set is rubbish and from a bygone era. It is also disapponting that such an expensive hotel gives you no coffee facilities in your room. You are forced to a very expensive breakfast room that is almost as hard to find as your guest room. The temperature in the room ranges from cool to frigid. I could go on but why bother. If you like a place that is all show but gets everything else wrong this is your hotel. If you have money to burn they will gladly take it for services other hotels include in the price. I have stayed in other hotels in Brussels that are muh more comfortable. This hotel is obviously in a cycle of decline and has forgotten that the guests and their comfort should be the focus of their attention, not fancy marble or pretentious staff personnel Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"An oveall positive vacation experience"
Overall, the experience was every enjoyable. A few things occurred that, at face value may have seemed insignificant but they did compromise my overall experience. The hotel advertised Wi-Fi. For whatever reason however, I couldn't get it in my room. I had to walk 50 feet down the hall to pick up a signal in the lobby near the elevators. Not very conducive […] to being able to keep up on correspondences. In addition, the air conditioner went out in our room one night. Management brought us a fan but that accomplished little more than to circulate hot air. Great location. Near the center and walking distance to the North train station. Lounge was beautiful. Hotel staff was very pleasant and helpful. The waiters in the affiliated bistro acted like providing service was an inconvenience. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Perfect location overall."
Our 2-day stay was wonderful. The hotel is in an excellent location. You could walk anywhere and the metro stop was right outside the hotel. There are lots of places to eat and right behind the hotel is a "shopping boulevard." When we checked in, they gave us a room that looked like it has seen better days and smelled really musty. My husband's allergies […] started to act up so we requested another room. The second room was more updated. If I had one suggestion for the hotel, it would be to update their TVs. The Metropole is a very elegant hotel. I was pleasantly suprised at the size of the room. The overall beauty of the hotel exceeded my expections. Can't say enough about this hotel. The staff could not have been more helpful; the room was large and comfortable; near shopping, tour buses, and of course the Grand Place. "Great hotel, close to main attractions"
I really liked this hotel. Room was always clean. Bed was made every day and towels were changed on demand. Unexpected pleasant surprise was that hotel provided 2 bottles of water (still & carbonated) and 2 bottles of Coca-Cola in the fridge, every day, free of charge. That was really nice of them to do that. The hotel is a nice, old style hotel with […] beautiful ceilings, crystal chandeliers and lots of beautiful granite and has an old style functioning elevator that we used every day, the one I have only seen in the movies. The location of the hotel is really good, not too far from the main square, just a short walk away. We walked everywhere. Bar had a happy hour from 6-8 pm, buy 1 get one free per person. So if there is 2 of you than each one will have to get a drink to get 2nd free. They had a nice cafe with a superb service. Prices are a little higher but expected of a 5 star hotel. Food was really good and service was also good. I ate there a few times because of the good food and service after I got fed up with the bad and rude service at other restaurants around main square. I preferred to pay more here at the hotel but to have a service I'm used to here in US. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a good, comfy, clean hotel in a good location. "Nice old hotel"
The public areas of this hotel are beautiful and the service was very good, but some details in the rooms need attention. "Splendid art deco charm downtown Brussels"
Grand old hotel, café, bar and restaurant with art deco architecture and furnishings miraculously preserved for more than a century. Fantastic location in the center of Brussels, walking distance to all downtown tourist hot spots, but location on main square also very noisy at night, in particular during the soccer EM. Friendly and efficient service. Room […] (128) good sized but very poor soundproofing to the street and tired furnishings: hole in the curtain (mended), paint peeling of doors and doorjambs, chipped sink, tube-type TV and stained carpet. Free soft drinks and beer in romm fridge are a nice gesture, as is the free basic internet access. Free parking with valet service is a real plus in downtown Brussels. Breakfast ridiculously expensive, better to pop over to one of the nearby cafés for a breakfast at 1/3rd of the price. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Spacious Brussels"
We loved our spacious bathroom and our room had a balcony, which is rare in Europe. The hotel is centrally located and right on a transit line. It's maybe a 5 minute walk to the sights in the old part of Brussels (Maaneken-Piis, Grande Place, Galleries Royales, etc.). This must have been a great hotel at one time. Lobby and common areas are beautiful but need a face lift. The place is very dated. It needs a major uplift to be a great hotel again. "The best in Brussels"
We arrived in Belgium early that morning, after an overnight flight. We got to the hotel by 11am. We thought we would have to check our bags, and wait till later to get a room. No such thing. They were GREAT. Beautiful room with a giant king bed. They were unbelievably gracious. Immaculate room and bathroom. Free beer, soda, and water in mini bar. Friendly […] staff. Everyone spoke English, or bent over backward to try. Buffet breakfast were incredible. My wife and I ate twice a day. Breakfast and then dinner. OK so we snuck in fresh Belgium waffles with chocolate sauce a few times. Great location. Great café on site. "Grand Dame needs a bit of retouch"
Metropole Hotel offers luxurious amenities and is centrally-located: Central and Midi stations which we used are within walking distance, as are most of the city sights and shopping. Service is warm, efficient, and prompt. Hotel breakfast is sumptuous (really fills you for the full day of sight-seeing!), with a server constantly wanting to refill your […] coffee cup without being prompted. The room is large and appointed well; same with the bathroom. However, the Grand Dame is showing her age, with visible flaws such as rotting portions of the bathroom door casing, musty-smelling/looking carpet, outdated projection-type TV (with very limited channel selections), period bath faucets that are "stuck" and require a lot of effort to operate. In early October, the heating system was firing away and moderating it took a lot of effort. We were told that a top-down renovation is underway and has not reached the lower floors (where we were staying). However, our terrace was being used as a "dumping" place for plywood and other materials that we preferred to draw the curtains close to not see these unsightly stuff. But we'll take the warts with the good and we'll gladly stay again if we go back to Brussels. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"A week in Brussels at the Metropole"
The hotel is within walking distance of the Grand Place and many other tourist venues. The lobby is amazing. The style and painting are excelent. Brunch was included with our expedia rate. Altough the food was different than I am used to at home, it was good and there was a wide selection. The service at the brunch was excelent with my coffee cup being […] filled regularly. The hotel does not have a business center where I could check in online for my flight home. To offset this the staff allowed me to use one of their computers and printer to print the boarding passes. The included wifi worked well for my smart phone and laptop. Our room was very clean and well laid out. The furnishings were older and the room could use a decorating update. The decorations did not look anything like the pictures on their web site. We can only assume we got a room that had not been redecorated in 20 or 30 years. The only maintenance complaint was the drains on the sinks did not work properly. Overall we had a good stay. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great place to have a drink, but overpriced and check room before accepting it."
I only stayed at the Metropole for one night, so perhaps that's why they put me in a room on the first floor facing a brick wall (#1018). Okay, I guess someone has to stay in that room, and it was only one night. But as dinner time neared, a definite cooking smell wafted into my room. Then at the crack of dawn, people started dragging noisy carts up […] and down the alley below, making it impossible to sleep. I would have communicated this to the hotel if they had asked, but they didn't. Gorgeous and grand public rooms, but an overall stuffy, corporate vibe. Definitely overpriced for what I received. The hotel is very nice. The location within 10 minutes of the Grand Place is excellent. The only warning is regarding the Metropole Cafe.
