On the southern edge of Plaka, the pedestrianised archaeological promenade skirts the foot of the Acropolis, cutting between the pine-covered slopes of Filopappos Hill and Herodes Theatre (built 2 AD), hosting open-air performances through summer. Close by is the New Acropolis Museum, designed by Swiss architect Bernard Tschumi.

The descriptions of the rooms are misleading. We thought we would have an Acropolis view with a "Superior" room, but we were informed that only "Premium" rooms have a view. Ok, fine. We paid quite a bit for a view of the neighboring hotel. They offered every guest some water when they walked in, except us! Also, the wifi costs were outrageous! There […] are 2 computers in the lobby with 20-minute limits & a printer though. You can also use the wifi in the lobby. When we asked the fastest way to the beach the doorman just said "Oh, you don't want to go there now, go in the morning." We wanted to go see the sunset; that’s not in the morning. We couldn't find our toiletries because they were wrapped in washcloths under the sink, whenever we left our room an alarm went off, and they have electronic "do not disturb" signs, so whenever you leave the room and take the single key card they give you, you turn it off and the maid automatically assumes you want your room cleaned. Our room was cleaned twice in one day, a huge waste of the maid's time. Breakfast was average. The rooftop view is good, but Athens is incredibly windy so if you want to sit outside you will be blown around. The room was comfortable though, and the hotel has a good location for the Acropolis, Acropolis Museum, Plaka, Hadrian's Arch, and the Temple of Zeus. It's a decent walk from Syntagma Sq. station, probably about 1 km (3/5 mile), but not a problem. The metro ride from the airport is 45 minutes. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Athens Gate"
We arrived flew into Athens on a hot September day to learn that there was in fact a national taxi driver strike. Despite having provided our hotel with phone and email contact information routinely when making our hotel booking, it obviously didnt occur to hotel management that it might be useful to contact incoming customers and warn them of the upcoming […] taxi strike, and provide information on alternative means of reaching the hotel. We phoned the hotel and obtained directions on how to reach the hotel via a combination of rail (including a change of lines) and walking. Finally stepping into our room in the Athens Gate hotel my partner and I were nearly knocked over by a foul stench. Hotel staff agreed to move us into another room. Upon stepping into our second room, we nearly fainted from the heat. After 3 complaints to hotel staff, they finally agreed to move us a second time. As we moved to our third room, we wondered what our next Goldilocks experience would be. Fortunately it was ok, putting aside the poorly maintained condition of the room, and fortunately we were only there for an overnight stay before heading off the Islands. I must say that hotel staff generally tried to be helpful, but it appears that they are being badly let down by poor hotel management / maintenance. The hotel is wonderfully located with terrific views of the Pantheon, especially from the roof garden. That however would not be enough to entice us back to the Athens Gate again.
