"Good hotel, great staff but some updating needed"
The staff were exceptionally helpful and polite. The room had some defects- the old sash windows wouldn't stay open or lock, when this was combined with the radiators being on full in July it meant the room was way too hot. "MacDonald Leeming on Ullswater"
The bed, always important in a hotel, was one of the most comfortable we have slept in. The bathroom was spotless, brightly lit and modern. Waiting staff in the restaurant couldn't have been any more helpful and, very importantly, friendly - all too often hotel staff appear in pain when doing their job! Attention to detail was also commendable - we […] were staying for a significant birthday and a card was left in the bedroom wishing all the best from the staff of the hotel. Views down to Lake Ullswater were fabulous. If one had to find faults then they would be only minor - as befits many buildings of its age, the interior would benefit from a lick of paint in parts and the floorboards on the first floor could do with being reset to stop them creaking like a heaving ship in a storm when anyone walks across them. Also the bar where we sat before dinner felt more like a cupboard than a 'bar' and would benefit from a user-friendly makeover; perhaps with old photographs of the area etc. on the walls.
