Our room was very shabby and poorly maintained. It looked like the cleaning crew had done their best to keep it nice, but the real problems are semi-structural (eg. ceilings, walls, and carpet). We asked to be moved to another room and were accomodated. Not sure why we were given the terrible room to start with.

Our stay was fine. We paid £50 per night for bed and breakfast per night and I think that was a little too much. The breakfast was quite good. The leisure facilities were good.

One night stay mid way to Scotland in early, freezing April. For the price of m'way motel this Swallow is a far better place to be. Friendly staff, comfy bed, warm room, excellent hot and cold breakfast, a good gym and pool, free parking and a bar where the prices were not unreasonable. Refurbishment ongoing - new carpets, flat screen TV in room - bathroom […] a bit tired and needing attention. All in all, no complaints and a bargain at the price. Positives: very friendly and helpful staff, good breakfast, warm room with plenty of hot water, hotel location good - walking distance to city centre, leisure facilities excellent, with pool sauna, steam room etc. Excellent value for money. This hotel was run down and possibly the worst I have stayed in. The decor was dated and wallpaper peeling off walls and heavily marked. The whole building was in need of a huge makeover and the photo they use in the booking section clearly isn't what you get on arrival. Luckily I arrived late and set off early.

Reception - blunt & arrogant. The carpets throughout were filthy and worn. It was late when we arrived - 10:30, we asked about food and we were told to go to a take away down town. No glass In the bathroom despite the fact that it was double occupancy room - makes brushing teeth a bit of a chore. It was raining, our widow wouldn't close & there was an eve spilling down onto the open window. When we went to the bar, there were some people there,but after waiting ten minutes for service no bar person arrived behind the vacant counter so we left. Our business requires a lot of travel. I had read the other reviews, so I was not surprised to find the decor tired and scruffy. The key elements (sheets, bathroom) of the rooms are clean, but I twice put my hand through a cobweb in other parts of the room- I have never done this before at a hotel! The beds were not overly comfortable. The shower was unusable, as for some reason you could […] only get (very) hot water running through it- at least the bath tap mixer worked. At breakfast, another first: despite our being down a few minutes after breakfast started, they had run out of white bread! As I had expected from other reviews, wi-fi did not work in our room, but it was fine in the bar area. Overall, I was not dissatisfied, however- we were only using it as a stopover, and it was the cheapest hotel we could get at short notice. The leisure club looked OK, but we didn't have time to use it. We slept OK, and breakfast was passable, apart from the bread issue. We had fun with the quiz machine in the corridor- I wish more hotels had one! This is therefore a very unusual hotel- it has good facilities on paper, but instead of smartening it up to compete with the Holiday Inn end of the market, they seem to keep inverstment very low and compete at the low end, largely on price. I wouldn't avoid it, but make sure you understand it's strengths and weaknesses before booking a stay. Read more

Nothing about the stay at this hotel was good, Had we known it was in administration we would not have booked. The hotel needed refurbishing urgently and to say it was 3 star was not correct. The staff were trying very hard to deal with what they had but never would we recommend this hotel to anyone..It was just as well we only stayed one night.

Absolute joke !! Makes Fawlty Towers look 5 Star Firstly the hotel is barely sign posted from the road and even with a Sat Nav its easy to miss. As you arrive you see the tired and worn hotel looking that something from a 1970,s beach holiday. The car park is small and tight. As we arrived there was a wedding reception going on. Poor them !!! Drunken […] folk outside smoking and swearing around the door. Once in reception we waited 10 minutes for someone to arrive and eventually an uniformed lady appeared asking if we were "alright". Oh the receptionist had returned from her cigarette break. We were given our key and headed down the corridor with a carpet that should have been replaced years ago and held together in many places by black tape. The room was ROASTING hot, and could not be cooled down. The furniture was 70s style and worn out and unsafe. The shower did not work at all. The bath mat was mouldy. So at bed time window open to hope for even the slightest breeze to cool the room as despite asking about the heating we were told it was off, although every radiator in the place was red hot !! So to bed, roasting, and then the wedding reception kicked in, Disco and loud noise until gone 2am. Breakfast, into the dirty dinning room, again black tape holding the carpet together. Scruffy man points us to a table. Then nothing. Had to ask twice to get coffee, poor quality of re heated food on dirty plates. NEVER again Swallow !! Read more

Overall the hotel reflected the rate we paid, the hotel is need of some serious tlc, but by enlarge wasn't a bad stay. The leisure centres staff were helpful and freindly enough as were the other guest there. Breakfast was buffet style and everything easy accessible , we ordered one item to be cooked that wasn't on the buffet which arrived speedily […] and to good standard. This was just a last minute stop off to avoid the travel disasters of Thursday night. Itnwas cheap for bed and breakfast and close to the station, so on that basis it fit the bill. Stayed here 4 times already nothing fancy but comfortable and clean, great base for lake district and exploring. Plenty of choice with pubs and restaurants in the town area and shopping too. The hotel decor looks a bit tired, especially the carpet, but everything else more than made up for it: especially the friendly staff who, at every occasion, was very helpful and competent. The hilltop location meant the sun shone into the hotel restaurant and lounge till late making it look really welcoming.
