This property is not four star rated, two star at best according to my critical eye and my three day stay. The Brits are a little stiff but the management at this hotel reinforce that stereotype to the letter. This establishment is all about the money. The size of my room reminded me of a prison cell. The bathroom light could not be controlled by me […] and turned off automatically after exiting this included the bathroom fan which produced an annoying noise for three minutes. The television operated with the same thrifty concept. Thrifty was the mode of operation for this establishment which impacted the quality of bacon served for breakfast" and the use of wifi only in the dining room after you have consulted the caretaker. I understand that you get what you pay for, but please don' t mislead us. I would rather pay more and get my expectations met than to get to a place and be disappointed. When I arrived I was told I booked a single room and that I would share a bathroom and for my own bathroom I had to pay more. I reviewed my booking and there was no such notation. I payed the difference for a cell with a bath, but I would have preferred going to a REAL four star hotel, but the cancellation policy was cost prohibited. The guest house was close to the train station and not too far from the main part of the city. The owner was friendly and helpful. The internet did not always work in the room but apparently the entire city is just now getting fiberoptic lines so hopefully it will improve. The room was small but very tidy and the breakfast was good as well.

This is a two story B-and-B type guest house in an old neighborhood of Southampton. There are several others like it on the same block. No elevator. We had trouble sleeping, being either too hot with the thick coverlet or too cold because of air temperature. Breakfast was ample and well-prepared. It was probably worth the price.

Generally OK. Good location, close to the centre of Southampton. However, we had a very small room, albeit with en-suite. There was not really enough space for the furniture (i.e. Bed), our cases, and 2 of us. Parking was on the street - OK for out overnight stop, but an issue for a longer stay.

Perhaps it was because we are used to proper hotels that have been discounting their prices but I don't think that this establishment rated four stars or the prices that a hotel would charge. Although within walking distance of the centre it was still about twenty minutes away from the main shopping area. As I have already informed tripadvisor this is not a place I would ever want to stay again. 1. The landlady took ages to answer the locked door (it was about 6pm) and it was raining hard. 2. I asked for a room in a quiet spot so we were next to the dining room! 3. As I sat on the bed - sat not lying down - the base rose up to meet me - rapidly therefore […] I had very little sleep both nights. 4. There were no tissues in the room. 5. There were no serviettes in the dining room. 6. The room was naturally dark anyway so to add to the ambience there was some kind of strange dark blue plastic stuff on the walls like you would see in a kitchen and the ceiling lighting was totally unable to counteract the darkness. 6. At some time a bulb in the ceiling must have blown and it had been tastefully replaced by a BLUE bulb. 7. There was rust and the beginnings of mildew in the shower cubicle. 8. When we arrived back at the Lodge after being out for the evening we had no electricity except the ceiling lights, therefore, we were unable to make a hot drink, read in bed or go to the bathroom without a torch. Apparently a guest had blown a fuse or something or so we were told the next morning. 9. At breakfast the yolks on my poached eggs were hard, the butter and jams (except the blackcurrant jam) were tasteless and the bread had a strange texture as if it had been made partially with semolina. I arrived with my son at the guest house at 8pm; very tired and hungry. There was no parking spaces left outside the house but there were a few spaces nearby on the street. I was directed to a local fish and chip shop where we purchased a takeaway (superb value for money). We retired back to the room which was very clean and comfortable, apart from […] the heat; it had been a warm day and the room was not well ventilated. There was a good sized window which we left open, and this helped to cool the room, allowing us to get a good nights sleep in the comfortable beds. Wir waren 4 Nächte im Argyle Lodge in ein Doppelzimmer mit Bad und sehr zufrieden. Innenstadt und Bahnhof sind zu Fuß leicht zu erreichen. Die Betten waren sehr bequem,das Frühstück war super lecker und alles war sauber. Wir werden auf jeden Fall wieder da übernachten wenn wir nach Southampton reisen.

Den var mkt bra, det enda som saknades var stolar någonstans förutom till frukosten, vi fick sitta i sängen vilket inte kändes så bra. Det fanns heller ingen sittplats utanför hotellet vilket var ett litet minus. Vi fick ett mycket trevligt bemötande och trivdes jättebra, roligt att se hur ett typiskt engelskt hus såg ut inifrån.

The hotel itself is well-maintained, clean and they offer good breakfast. Just they are not nice and welcoming in their attitude. I don't know what made them so dislike me, but they clearly were not friendly or warm and welcoming at all. More annoying thing was that they were much "nice" and "kind" to other guests. Really, what was so irritaing about […] me? I wonder. Even if the hotel facilities were poorer (e.g., no TV in the room and no nice paitings on the wall etc.), I would have liked the hotel and the sevice much better, and would have surely rated better, ONLY if they had better "attitude". Remember, hospitality is all about how you treat your guests with your heart, especially if you are going to state your hotel as more "stars" on websites and charge money by offering "sevices". In addition, wi-fi was very weak in the room and I coule barely use my laptop, and not really convenient location. You need a cab to the city centre. Read more
