The hotel was very well maintained and appointed. The front desk staff was friendly and efficient. The room located in new wing was huge for European an even Amerrican standards. Very clean and good daily service. The architecture and courtyard are stunning, not to mention the Chapel. On the down side, we tried having dinner one evening but hotel was […] hosting a big group and dining room was being used for their dinners and receptions and could not accomodate us ( party of 2). "Decent hotel if luxury is not your priority."
Room 217 in old wing : dreadful. Grotti floor, I've seen batter bathrooms in a motel 6, not up to par for the cost. Towels were alternately yellowed, and hard. Saving grave - super clean sheets and what appeared to be a new mattress. I checked because previous ratings mentioned a potential bed bug issue. Second night I moved to the new wing ; Room […] 1. This is more representative of a decent hotel. Modern decor, fixtures, furniture. There were treadmills, rowing machines, etc, unknown to us prior to checking into the new wing. Super clean, luxe bases, bath and living room. Partnering with a decent product line would elevate this hotel too. It was amenity and service "lite", which is not reflected in the 3-4 star price. This could have been a great hotel, but I suspect because we booked at a reduced rate, they knowingly gave us a room with malfunctioning air conditioning. The hotel has the opportunity to be very stunning .... we found it to be understaffed and the rooms offered very few amenities, but was comfortable sleeping. It would be nice to have an extra mirror outside the bathroom, washcloths, bigger soaps. In a few words. Don't stay here unless you are guaranteed a room in the NEW SECTION The old rooms are only suitable for retired Monks, they have minimal bathing facilities in bad repair. Barely two feet of hanging rail, three clothes shelves, no drawers. and A/C system that only circulates room temperature air. And I suspect has been that way for the […] last twenty years.On arrival we asked to be relocated near our friends in the new wing but was told that it was IMPOSSIBLE. throughout our nine day stay. Our room ,124, was overlooked by room 128's bathroom window so we had to keep the shutters closed., making the room a dungeon, two bedside lights and a small table lamp (120 watts total) produced only a glimmer of light. No available electrical outlets .No drawers. No way to get a morning coffee without dressing and going to the dining room and purchasing full breakfast. Limited room service. Good points , location, some parking (often full), good on site restaurant., Nice public spaces. Many nice English speaking staff, but many who said "It's impossible" way too many times .Forget the ambiance of the old rooms (not that our's had any) and stay in a new room or find somewhere else. The hotel is located in a 400 year old building that has served many purposes in its history. It is clean and modern furnished, but there are also obvious compromises made to its historic foundations. We stayed in a room that is advertised as Deluxe, which is supposed to be the roomiest, and priciest rooms in the modern section of the hotel. It was the width of a dog kennel. Even though the twin beds were smaller than usual, we could barely get past them to access the room. In addition, the closet was set into the wall, which smelt very musty, so […] my clothes didn't stay clean. When I tried to use the shelves in the closet, they fell down, and I had to try to rebuild them before use. There I'd no kettle - the hotel charges 5 euro for a cup of tea. When we sought advice from the hole staff we received vagueries, that were of little help. One staff member in reception was an exception. The restaurant on the other hand was beautiful, and the food exceptional. Full marks to the chef. Only complaint there was that the staff kept us waiting at the door of the restaurant (entrance from hotel), and conscientiously ignored us for a long time until I was forced to interrupt a waiter to get attention. "4 star location, but 2~3 star service"
The location is great: walking distance from the station & inside the city walls. Our stay was at the end of June & we were in one of the modern rooms in the annex We found several problems with our room: on arrival the sink was blocked, and the air-con was barely working: at full blast it would hardly rustle a piece of paper & was only a fraction […] below room temperature anyway. So the staff fixed the sink & gave us a fan, but that misses the point for a 4 star hotel. The staff were helpful, but hardly went out of their way to provide anything other than the most basic "fix". Our final issue involved ordering a taxi to get us to the TGV station. It was late, and the desk staff couldn't really care. I cant believe we were the first to ask for a cab to the TGV so why not make it clear to the cab company that being on time matters. "Don't Go There!"
Hotel in a great location, Breakfast excellent and my room was large enough with good air on. But there it ends. Staff disappointing. I arrived around 7.45pm. The desk clerk spoke great English so a plus, but provided very little information and it had to be "dragged" out of her. To make matters worse, my room had no lift access. I was simply told that […] I should carry my cases up the stairs as that was the best way. There was no offer of assistance. The stairs turned out to be a narrow, very steep and winding staircase, obviously hundreds of years old, but not easy to ascend let alone with 2 suitcases etc. It was very difficult and unpleasant and the lack of concern by the desk clerk was derelict. I am on the wrong side of 60, so it would be readily apparent that it was a very difficult task for me. It took me about 15 minutes to get up the 3 flights of the medieval staircase and I was distressed at the end of it. No other room was offered and I was so deadbeat that I had no other option, but to proceed. It transpired that there is a porter, but that was not offered, nor when I was leaving. If you are hellbent on going there, do not accept rooms 114 or 115. All others seemed to have lift access. The other down side was the room lighting, the lights were insufficient and in at least half of the room it was not possible to see clearly, let alone read instructions attached in those areas. "Mixed impressions"
Mixed thoughts on this hotel. Great location, comfortable beds (we were in the new wing), nice small (not heated) rooftop pool and pleasant lounging area which was a welcome break from the hustle of Avignon, during the July Festival. Very helfpul staff, who spoke good English. Good breakfast. BUT the other reviews are correct about the hotel. If you […] want quaint you won't get it in the new wing. We didn't mind as we knew before arrival and didn't spend much time in the room. The new rooms are functional and have good AC but the shower/ bath is poor - shower isnt wall mounted and have to hold it by hand. The water pressure wasn't great. The biggest disappointment was that we pre-booked dinner at the hotel, in order to eat in the authentic cloitre area which is shown on all of their website/ advertising. When we turned up that evening, we were told this simply wasn't an option and we had to eat in the garden. Given that this is at the back of the cloitre, and faces onto the pre-fabricated metal wall of the new wing, and has metal chairs, this wasn't the case. The food was good, but we wouldn't have eaten here if we had known. Overall, we would definitely stay here again though for the location and calm rooftop area alone. "Great Location but not a Great Stay"
We were very disappointed with the hotel for a number of reasons: 1.Our room was on the 3rd floor in the roofspace and the only operational lift was temperamental to say the least, and only worked when it felt like. No fun carrying bags up and down 3 flights of stairs!! 2. The air conditioning in our room was was a joke and was inadequate to deal with […] heat generated from being in the roof space, and stopped functioning all together at some point during the night . 3. It took 30 minutes to half fill the tiny bath due to the lack of water pressure. 4. The curtain for the roof light window did not cover the window and we were bathed in glorious sun light at 6:15am!!
