"Paper-thin walls"
We were fairly disappointed with the Hotel Balmes for one reason in particular. The walls were paper-thin. We heard everything that happened on our floor and on the floor below us, because our room was a two-floor loft. This was particularly problematic when at 7AM we heard loud knocking and "La Policia!" shouted. We awoke in a panic thinking we were […] being arrested in a foreign country. It turned out not to be our room, but the fact that we thought it was demonstrates how thin these walls are. I wouldn't recommend staying here if you are a light sleeper. In addition to this, our shower wouldn't drain, and when we asked the front desk about it, there was no offer to fix it or move us to another room. They just recommended fidgeting with the drain. "Great spot just North of Tourist Stops"

The room was great, fabulous size! The location was wonderful. You can walk to many sites and the hotel is near buses and trains. Lots of boutiques/restaurants around hotel. Front desk generally unfriendly and unhelpful. Central location close to restaurants, shops, sites of interest to tourists and all transportation. Friendly and helpful staff willing to use whatever English they knew, which was always enough. Lobby and room nicely decorated, clean and comfortable. When we arrived we were shown to our room which had two twin beds. We asked if they could be put together. My original room was very small, the bedside lamp was broken and water was leaking from the air-conditioner. The window looked out onto a brick wall and airshaft. First off, whatever they use to clean the room reeks. Not only that, but I don't think the AC in the room worked because my room was insanely hot. There was a reason the price for my room was such a good value, the window was on a dark airshaft and the room was somewhat stuffy. They did offer me an upgrade at a reasonable price which a took after a couple of nights. "great location but hotel left much to be desired"
On the positive side, the hotel location was great, nearby a couple of metro stops as well as within a not-too-bad walking distance to a number of Barcelona sights, in a nice part of town. The linens were clean. The lobby area was swanky and stylish, very well maintained. On the negative side, our "standard" room was "garden" level with a view from […] the ceiling-placed window mostly of brick. The interior, though nicely furnished, had some dirty-looking painted brick walls. The other non-brick walls must have been very thin because we could hear a neighbor's conversation clearly. We also heard a neighbor's plumbing - faucets turning off and on, water running. A relatively small quibble, it took a while for the water in the shower to heat up. The hotel had a policy of an hour per day of wireless internet access, which seemed strange as the other hotels we stayed at (in Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca, comparable price range) had limitless access. How friendly and helpful the staff were was variable. Size-wise, the room was similar to other European hotels, and the bed was on the harder side but not very different from others we've experienced in European hotels. Overall, we were less than satisfied given the price of the hotel room and compared to another hotel we stayed at in the area in the same price range. It was a striking difference, and not favorable. Location is only a block away from a metro station that is only one stop away from Placa Catalunya, the main center of town. Purchase the 10-ticket metro/bus deal and the cost is less than one euro per trip...great bargain! Loved it here. We stayed six nights and the staff were lovely and helpful and the hotel is in a fantastic location within easy reach of the Rambla and Passeig de Gracia. The room, though small, was incredibly well planned and very clean with a modern bathroom and a fabulous shower. The little garden was a joy. I have only one minor negative in that […] our room was dark because it only had a window looking out to an interior well, BUT we had booked a stay during the period of the Spanish Grand Prix and we'd got an incredibly good nightly rate so we knew we wouldn't get the best room in the hotel. It didn't spoil our stay at all but, if you can afford it, and a view is important to you, then perhaps consider upgrading. We would definitely recommend the Balmes and can't wait to go back.
