Hotel Inca Real

I stayed here my first night in Costa Rica ever, so it was perhaps a rude awakening, but very nice for a Costa Rican hotel. There is no air conditioning (just a ceiling fan), and you need to place all toilet paper/feminine hygiene products in the trash bin next to the toilet, but this is true of almost every place in Costa Rica (especially the 2nd one). […] The beds were very comfortable, there were lots of TV channels, the Wifi signal was fine, and the building was very pretty and in good repair. It's pretty close to the center of San Jose, but that being said it isn't really a good idea to walk around after dark (6 PM). The hotel was in the old downtown. Great location, near museums, 5 blocks from Avienda Central and good restaurants. The staff was OUTSTANDING. They bent over backwards for us. Plus, the price was right and it included a continental breakfast.

The hotel is very noisy, the night staff was rude and the internet photos create an illusion of a much finer hotel. I am returning through San Jose again on this trip and have booked a room in an other hotel. I would not stay at the Ica Real again.

Getting nickeled and dimed: $2 for 2 eggs for breakfast; $1/night for use of in-room safety deposit box. Wish hotel was upfront with these charges prior to my booking. Otherwise staff was friendly, accommodating, and professional.

If you are looking for a budget hotel in downtown San Jose, this hotel is recommendable. But bear in mind it's only rated with 2 stars. The rooms are not insulated and smell stuffy as they have no direct windows rather overlooking the courtyard inside the atrium-like foyer of the hotel. Beautiful architecture though.

It was a pleasant surprise to see that the inside of the hotel was a vast improvement on the external appearance. A nicely decorated foyer and guest lounge area. Rooms are pleasant but smallish. Shower was hot and with a good spray, which is not common in Central Am. It was of concern that the room had no aircon, but it didn't seem to matter. The location […] is good with a bridk 10 min walk to Plaza de la Cultura. The surroundings are not particularly inviting but we didn't worry about walking around at night. The hotel really is not in the best area of San Jose, right on the outskirts of the city. There was really nothing around it at all. The main square was about a 10 minute walk which was fine during the day, but I would not recommend doing so at night. The hotel staff was not very helpful and forgot to do wakeup calls, which you needed since none of […] the clocks had batteries in them, and they didnt have any at the desk. The room itself was not bad, just the basics. Shower was the best part, and I hope you dont want ice because there is none, even though there is a bucket. Inca Real was the least expensive hotel I could find in San Jose. Since we were only staying one night on the way into Costa Rica and one night on the way out, we decided that we didn't need anything special, so cheap would do. When we arrived, we were very pleasantly surprised-- the hotel was very clean, had 2 computers for guest use, gave us wakeup […] calls and called our taxis for us for the airport. The staff spoke very decent english, and were helpful in giving us ideas for dinner and entertainment. Our room had two beds instead of the expected one. My only complaint was the firmness of the mattress, but I know some folks are fond of firm beds. The bathrooms were nice-- very good water pressure and pleasently hot water. I was somewhat concerned that the hotel would be unsafe and in a dangerous area, where I would be unable to safely walk to a good restaurant and might be in danger of being robbed. the hotel was in a very poor neighborhood. As the taxi approached the area you got more and more concerned. The hotel looks like a small shopping mall tuned into hotel. the safe in the room was broken. One of the the beds was terrible. There were holes- possibily by cigaretts - in the bed sheets! Each room has a huge glass window. There was smell of […] alchohol in stairway. I only made 2-3 short phone calls and was charged 20 dollars for it. At breakfast I asked for an extra toast, but the woman said no! Wasn't worth the money I paid. What a shame that such a 'hotel' is listed on hotels.com. Read more

THE HOTEL IS VERY NICE AND VERY CONFORTABLE, THE BEDS WERE CLEAN AND SOFT. MY ONLY PROBLEM LIES WITH THE FRONT HELP, THEY WERE NOT HELPFUL AT ALL AND ACTED AS IF THEY WERE DOING ME A FAVOR. BESIDES IT DID NOT HAVE PRIVATE PARKING SO THAT WAS AN EXTRA 22 DLS. NEXT TIME I WOULD RATHER GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.
