"Great Hotel"
The staff were wonderful. Rooms were clean and spacious. There is a Starbucks connected to the hotel although we ate breakfast several times in the restaurant. Great selection! This hotel is close to major attractions and I would recommend it to anyone visiting Shanghai.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

They had great music and singing at the lobby bar --- great to come back in the evening for a nice drink.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Convenient location and nice staff"
The location is perfect for a short walk to the Bund, shopping, and dining. The only drawback is the smell of cigarette smoke even in a non-smoking room. The thermostat does not seem to change to cooler temperature as desired.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Staying at Howard Johnson"
I travel to China on business a lot. I always find my staying at the Howard Johnson Hotel in Shanghai a rewarding and refreshing experience. Kudos to the staff. The hotels in the States could learn from them when it comes to the hospitality business. Michael fro BostonGenuine Expedia guest review
"great price and location"
Great Gym and Sauna. Very fairly priced, and a very good view. Felt secure, though tall blonde anlgo's are guaranteed to be solicited twice per block - no big deal. M level pub had a nice happy hour and two pool tables, good camaraderie. If you visit Shanghai, be sure to check out Shanghai 1933.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

You wouldn't think a Howard Johnson can be so grand! The price is hard to beat and the location is so convenient if you want to shop in Nan Jing Road.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Horrible!"
Besides near the Bund and Nanjing Road, this hotel's condition and service is just horrible. I don't quite understand how the hotel currently gets 4+ rating. The personnel is horrible (they kept telling me to pay RMB $40 service charge for each train ticket, then I realized (I speak Chinese) I can get tickets at RMB $5 service charge at a nearby travel […] agency). The room condition is horrible (the carpet is torn and they just taped it up) and food is pricy and horrible (RMB $110 for a buffet breakfast) and finally getting a taxi right in the front of the hotel is a horrible experience (the taxi drivers argued about whose turn to take you while the doorman just stood there) Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Good experience"
I was upgraded to a suite, very nice, although furnitures are old. Great location, steps away from Nanying road pedestrian street for shopping.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Nothing but good!"
Stayed here on business for 4 nights after a trip to Xiamen and Nanjing. Location and price could not be better! Easy to exchange money, easy to crab a cab (cheap). Breakfast buffet expensive but supurb. If you've had enough chineese food, recommend The Gondola Restaurant - a small but great little italian place about 10 min walk. Or, Paulaner German […] food - taxi to the other side of the river - next to the Shangri La hotel. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great location, excellent value"
nice hotel in a great location. The building is getting a little old, but everything is well maintained and it's outfitted with all the amenities of a typical luxury hotel. My stay was very comfortable and they upgraded me to a spacious suite at no extra charge.Genuine Expedia guest review

"I wont go to this hotel again."
I travel to china at least twice a year and go to lots of different hotels. I don't know how other people could rate this hotel 4+ since that is why I got this hotel, this is a 3 star hotel, the location is the best you can have in Shanghai, the lobby looks good too. but geeeee, rooms are disappointing, worst beds, ugly and very old design and furniture. […] horrible breakfast for what they charge. if u really don't care about the room u can stay here since has good location. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Great hotel and location"
This is a very nice property. It is well situated with a great shopping area one block away. There is a Mc Donalds across the street and other affordable places to eat (Pizza Hut, KFC, etc.) as well as local Asian food. Don't be afraid by other people saying that walking to the hotel is not okay. It's only one block that you need to pay attention to […] your surroundings but it's okay. We enjoyed the location. The subway is about two blocks away and easy to get to. The Bund is walking distance as well as other attractions. Great location and hotel. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

I had a great stay at the HoJo Shanghai. First rate hotel in a fantastic location. Easy to get to everything by foot or just a couple blocks from metro which goes to both airports. I am very happy I chose to stay here.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Best Location in Shanghai for Me"
This hotel is excellent value for the nice price you will get if you stay several days. The location couldn't be better; Shanghai's main shopping and walking street, Nanjing Rd., is about 1 minute from the hotel. The wonderful Shanghai Museum is at one end on Nanjing Rd. and the Bund is at the other end. The hotel's gym and internet in your room are […] both free! And the restaurant staff at the Chinese and international restaurants are very friendly. When we stayed at the hotel for 5 days in December, the hotel lobby was beautifully decorated for Christmas. We stayed in a Business room; it was very comfortable and the staff cleaned the room well every day. The hotel staff speaks English reasonably well, and the concierge gave me good advice on getting to sightseeing spots. There's a 7-11 and a Starbucks (Note that it opens at about 9:30) right behind the hotel, which will save you money. The foot massages across the street from the hotel (by 7-11) are good & quite cheap as well. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Shanghai. We hope to stay there again soon! "Thrilled to find a beautiful hotel in such a good location with reasonable room cost."
Hotel breakfast buffet was quite good but dinner buffet was not so hot. That is okay since all sorts of good eating places nearby. At check out, I was asked to wait just a minute while a staff person checked the room frig for any unreported snack removal. I waited well over 10 minutes and the desk clerk did not make an effort to waive me off as approved […] until I walked over to him for find out what transpired. That was a little disappointing. No big deal. Other desk clerks helped with questions and booking tours, finding specific shops, etc. Overall, traveling by myself as a lone lady traveler was not difficult at all in Shanghai. How nice! I felt quite safe. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"HoJo Shanghai Nanjing Road"
We were skeptical of staying at a Howard Johnson's in Shanghai, but shouldn't have been. The location was great. The hotel was clean and had all the amenities. The staff was helpful and available. My only complaint is my perpetual one about the hardness of beds in China. We would have preferred a western bed. For the rate and location we would recommend […] this location and would readily stay there again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Our recommended hotel in Shanghai"
Me and my husband stayed at this hotel for 5 days and we really enjoyed our stay in this hotel. It's 5-10 minutes walk from the people's square metro station and our room's view was the Nanjing Road, the shopping area. Even though the bed was hard but we still could sleep well.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Excellent choice"
Everything about the Howard Johnson Plaza Shanghai was excellent. We did not eat at the restaurants, so I can not comment on that, but the location, condition of the hotel, cleanliness, comfort of rooms, amenities, fitness center including steam room, sauna, jacuzzi, pool, etc. was excellent. Fitness center was free when other Shanghai hotels charge […] for this. My only concern was the height of the tub in the room. It was on a platform and stepping out was a big step to the floor, so hanging on is essential, but this is a minor issue when compared to all the way above features of this hotel. Lobby is very inviting also, with lounge and coffee shop with good viewing out to Nanjing Road. Would definitely recommend this hotel. Hard to find any faults. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Good location with efficient staff"
Location of the hotel is very near to the shopping belt. Metro station within walking distance, same metro line from Pudong International airport. The staff were very helpful and efficient. "Happy but with a negative"
The only negative we have about this hotel is the lack of personal temperature control of the thermostat in the room. We had to leave the window open all day to get the room to cool down despite turning the fan to high. The proximity to Nanjing Road is a definite big plus as this gives one easy access to the Metro lines.Genuine Expedia guest review
"HoJo Shanghai"
Excellent location, just around the corner from Nanjing Road. Staff were friendly, helpful, professional and all seemed to speak English. Room was clean and comfortable, but could have had a little bit more lighting. Nice hotel amenities. Would highly recommend this hotel to everyone.Genuine Expedia guest review

"highly recommended"
Great location a stones throw away from E Nanjing Rd. Clean, comfortable and safe. Floors accessible only to guests with keys. Nice big room with big bed. Flatscreen tv. Free wifi allows for access to facebook, which is generally blocked in China. Buffet was good: seafood, hand made noodle bar, lots of dessert options etcGenuine Expedia guest review
"Great Location, Nicely set up and clean and tidy"
Hotel is in a good central position, rooms are pretty good, i'd say 4 out 5 stars. Hotel is well maintained and presented. Only negative is some staff need to learn English, and I wish smoking was banned in Hotels like it is in Australia.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Disappointing"
This hotel was in a great location in terms of being in the centre of Shanghai, but it cost us 350 yuen to get here from the airport which I thought was expensive. None of the taxi drivers at the airport wanted to take us to our hotel because they 'claimed' they didnt know where to find this hotel, this was pretty frustrating after getting off a long […] flight. After a long drive, finally got to the hotel they were friendly enough, but it didnt feel super friendly. The restaurant in the hotel was not the best. Once we got to our room we pretty much flaked on the bed and unfortunately the beds were rock hard! We paid for an extra bed here as we had 3 people total travelling and we didnt need it. The 2 beds would have been find for 3 of us. 2 were a couple. Overall not a great hotel and I wouldnt stay here again if I was in Shanghai. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Howard Johnson Plaze. Good stay, but the Gym heat,"
This hotel excellent locality, good rate, nice room, great bathroom and air conditioning worked, lovely Lobby. Nice breakfast buffet. Good Pool Two bad points. The beds in Superior room so uncomfortable- so hard, like being on concrete The GYM was far to hot, set at daily 28c, a sweat box, good equipment, but who wants to exercise in such heat.. Lower […] the temperature please to 20-22 range!. Found the Concierge staff, somewhat dismissive and unhelpful-but good with Taxi. Not much English in the hotel, 2nd floor Chinese restrained looked interesting, but no English, so took our service elsewhere Overall would recommend this hotel as good value Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Excellent location"
The location just off Nanjing road was perfect. The hotel itself is very nice, great service. The beds are hard which is typical of Chinese hotels, wifi in room was quite slow.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Four days at the Howard Johnson Shanghai"
This is a great hotel at the very epicenter of shanghai a short 2 minute walk to every where including the bund etc, the room was great the staff helpful and the best location and well priced, my wife and I spent four nights there on holiday in April 2012' the only criticisms we would have was the bed was a bit hard for our liking and the breakfast […] overpriced, however there are multiple choices to eat within two minutes of hotel at a fraction of the cost, over all a very good hotel a good experience would highly recommend and again fabulous location. "Howard Johnson Hotel"
This hotel is in a wonderful location and is central to the Bund, the East Nanjing Rd pedestrian area and easy reach of the French Concession area. The rooms are large and comfortable.
