The Fairmont Chateau Whistler

I'm a sucker for nice rooms, nice lobbies, nice spas, and nice cocktail bars. And this place fits the bill on all of those accounts. It's super convenient to the slopes too. So, 4 stars. The -1 is for the snippy bell hop who greeted us. Spoke at lightening speeds...we asked him to repeat that...he rolled his eyes and said it even faster. Then he started […] opening our ski bags without asking - which was rude. I know he wants to keep the skis out of the room, but we had some things in the bag that we didn't want to unpack yet. It was hasty and rude. The housekeeping didn't show up either, and we got a snippy call that said, "We're calling to explain that we didn't make up your room because the privacy sign was out and housekeeping stops at 4pm." The privacy sign went out at 3:45, sweety, so, that's our bad? Ok, hon. It's an expensive hotel room, so honestly, I'd like to see you personally clean get off your duff and clean the room this instant. Read more

Beautiful hotel. They've thought of all your needs as a skier. We used the Gold Service and it was really sad when we had to leave, so spoiled. It was very easy to get to either mountain for skiing.

You cannot beat the location for proximity to the slopes and a cozy, but grand bar for apres ski delights. The rooms are basic (althought the bed was very comfortable), but you're paying for location. The Fairmont is a grand winter skiing experience. From the Hotel entrance greeting, the lobby and the check-in, the room - everything was really great. The bar with the big fireplace is the best in Whistler. The Service and staff handling the ski valet is really nice. Fabulous hotel!! Only comment is they use flat bottom bed sheets and they did not stay tucked in at all, I was constantly fighting with the bottom sheet. Wish they would either use fitted bottom bed sheets or use the sheet strap/band that goes under the mattress and clips to opposite sides of the flat sheet to keep it from coming untucked.

We found the hotel to be ideally situated at the base of Blackcomb mountain in a quiet setting with only short walk to Whistler mountain. At the time of visit (beginning of Sept) there was a good childrens fairground operating at Blackcomb. Amenities at the hotel were very good, particularly the pool and gym with excellent shower facilities. Although […] the Wildflower restaurant is expensive it does offer excellent food but the hotel does have the Portobello cafe which again offers excellent food at more realistic prices for those like me who need to stretch the budget as far as possible. Only problem is the airconditioning is on full blast making it very cold in the corridor when it really doesn't have to be that cold...seems to be a waste of energy. Location is convenient, close to the lift, but overall I was very disappointed. The hotel is HUGE and felt like an amusement park with all of the kids running around, disorganized staff at the front desk and dated decor. Our room had not been cleaned properly, including hairs in bathtub, stains on comforter (looked like makeup?) and chipped paint throughout. […] I don't require much at a hotel stay, but I do always expect a room to be clean. It should be noted, however, that the housekeeping staff was very receptive and apologetic. They immediately switched our rooms, which was greatly appreciated. Although we were disappointed to find that we couldn't rent an in-room movie later that night, as the hotel's system was down (which we should have been told at check in). Similarly, the wildflower restaurant was underwhelming. Halibut was fine but overpriced for what it was. Excellent service though. The pool area was pretty, but packed with people and loud music. It felt like a frat party. I have had positive Fairmont stays, specifically at Lake Louise and Maui, but will not be returning to this location. Go to the Four Seasons instead. Read more

We were very upset that we had to wait for 3 hours past our check in time. We got the keys to our room at 7pm. Our room wasn't ready on time and we were made to wait around in the lobby being told that it should be ready in half an hour. Our motivation to stay at this property was the Fairmont brand. The past experience has been favorable and the standard of the property was not disappointing. We liked the Fairmont a great deal, but we could see and walked through other similar hotels in lux style that would have served us well, also. The single best feature was the pool area. Our family […] are serious swimmers and it's hard to do laps for a cardio workout in the family style pool patio areas most hotels offer. The location was okay. We had our car when we wanted to venture further then a short walk. The village shops and entertainment, restaurants etc were in the lower village1/2 mile away. Staff were great! The suggestions and tips were very much appreciated and restaurant suggestions excellent! The room was okay. The decor is Europe Chateau, which isn't my first choice being a more modern type decor fan, but certainly pleasant enough. It was spacious with the sofa, chair and king size bed, lots of firm pillows and creature comforts. It wasn't top shelf glam, more like "basic" but adequate. We would not have chosen this property if it wasn't heavily discounted for it was not an outstanding value. The lobby, meeting rooms, pool and property gives one the impression the rooms would have chandeliers etc, but this wasn't the case. Again, basic. Parking was pricey at $30 CD a night, but every property charged similar. No deals to be found there! Overall, we enjoyed our stay!! Read more

The saddest part was leaving the bed. We had the king size bed on the fourth floor. Amazingly comfortable. Concierge was always super helpful. They were able to give accurate directions to anywhere we wanted to go, great restaurant recommendations and overall very friendly. This hotel is not worth the excessive prices they charge. Everything was over-priced for the quality offered. The concierge was surly and exceedingly unhelpful, the ski lessons (private) were lackluster and ridiculously priced (10X what they pay the actual instructor, so no wonder they don't give their all), the phone and hair dryer were broken when […] I arrived, the fitness room was more like a closet with minimal equipment, and the "heated" indoor/outdoor pool was not, unless you are a penguin. Furthermore, add $13.95 per day for internet connection in the room, when other, less expensive hotels offered free connections. Also, since the Vancouver airport is 60+ miles away, add $30-$35 per night to park your car, even as you pay outrageous prices for your room, lift passes, rentals, and lessons. And the cherry on top - there was an unidentified creature in my room, although it did leave quickly. It obviously thought the accommodations were over-priced, as well. Upon investigation the hotel staff could find no trace of it, of course. For all the hype this hotel received and as highly rated as it is, it was very disappointing overall, and I would highly suggest that you spend your money elsewhere. Read more

We arrived at the Chateau Whistler with our little 5-year-old granddaughter. She was thrilled to be staying in a "castle" and decided that, for the time we were there, she was to be called Princess Sophia. The front desk staff were so friendly and kind not only to us but also to her. We enquired about transportation to the Peak to Peak Gondola and were […] told it would be no trouble for a hotel employee to drive us down there. This was especially appreciated as my husband has had a stroke and has difficulty walking. We were given a late check-out so we would have time to take the gondolas there and back. This is a very nice hotel, especially if you a travelling with twin 9 year old boys to go skiing! The best feature is the convenience of the ski rental gear shop and storage on the bottom floor next to the ski slope. We stayed on the "Gold" floor which provided a very nice complimentary breakfast every morning. Would stay again?
