My wife and I are physicians. We checked in very late at night for a medical conference. When I turned on the room lights, two small pests scurried... across the bed. I killed them both with my shoe. The night manager moved us from a 1st floor, golf course/partial ocean view to a garden view 2 doors away. I considered this a downgrade and the bathroom floor was not clean. That morning I requested an upgrade. We were moved to a second floor golf course/ partial ocean view room - with carpet and a somewhat cleaner bathroom floor. This was hardly what I would consisder an upgrade but my wife did not want to move into a fourth room. Otherwise, this beautiful facility was picturesque and enjoyable. John, the tennis instructor was phenomenal. He dramatically improved my game in just two private lessons. I felt the water sports were limited. Location.
The Fairmont Orchid in Kamuela, Hawaii, is poised on 32 tropical acres along the sunny Kohala Coast on Hawaii's Big Island. Adjacent to the Francis H. I'i Brown Golf Course, this oceanfront property is one-half mile from the Puako Petroglyph Archeological Preserve. Complimentary shuttle service within the resort is available upon request.

Hotel Features.
Hawaiian music accompanies the Hawaiian cuisine served at Brown's Beach House, featuring locally grown produce, mainland meats, and island seafood. The Orchid Court provides al fresco, buffet-style breakfasts and a la carte selections, while Norio's Sushi Bar & Restaurant boasts a menu featuring tempura, fresh sushi and teriyaki. Oceanfront massage cabanas and waterfall massage houses are hosted at Spa Without Walls, where pampering services include the Big Island Coffee & Vanilla Exfoliation Treatment and the Lomilomi Massage. A 36-hole championship golf course is featured at the Francis H. I'i Brown golf course, while 10 tennis courts reside at the property's Vic Braden Tennis College. A fitness center contains free weights and cardiovascular equipment. Kayaking, surfing and snorkeling are available on site, with additional amenities including two lava-rock spa tubs, and a 10,000-foot oceanfront pool. Children's activities include the Keiki Aloha program, offering nature walks, snorkeling and arts and crafts activities for a fee.

Guestrooms.
The 540 guestrooms feature crown molding, teak-wood furnishings, upholstered armchairs and decor in tones of khaki, saffron yellow and pale jade. Sliding-glass doors open to private furnished lanais with ocean or garden views. Bathrooms feature dual marble vanities, complimentary toiletries, bathrobes, phones and separate showers and bathtubs. Guestrooms feature LCD cable televisions with pay movies.

Hale Kai Restaurant - Watch endangered sea turtles bask on the shore from this toes-in-the-sand, family-style-dining restaurant. Serves a broad menu of lunch and dinner favorites, desserts, and cocktails. Located poolside. Open from late morning until late evening.

Kahakai Bar - Cocktails and pupus are served beachside under a Polynesian-style thatched roof. Open from late morning until early evening.

Recreation

Resort staff can assist guests with snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, and other water sports; fees apply. Cultural and nature hikes are also available (surcharge). Complimentary water-aerobics classes are held in the resort's 10,000-square-foot freeform pool each morning. Other facilities include two outdoor spa tubs, and a fitness center. Guests have access to 10 tennis courts, with a pro shop and instruction available; fees apply.

The hotel is lovely and the grounds are very beautiful. The food leaves a lot to be desired considering the pricing. The staff is very friendly. My room was not as clean as I would have liked it but not to bad. Watch out for mating mongoose on the lanai.
