We enjoyed our stay at the hotel. Enjoyed to be able to park without having to search for a parking spot. Also the parking was free where other hotels in the area you have to pay so much per day. Free Wi-fi and the continental breakfast was a plus. The hotel was walking distance to our son's appartment which allowed us to walk back and forth. I thought that this hotel was quite nice. I stayed from 1/27 to 2/2/13 (6 nights). The room and bathroom were kept nicely clean (there were some small mildew spots in the bathroom - but not terrible). I found the bed to be pretty comfy and I slept well (however I was engaged in strenuous physical activity each day - so was pretty exhausted each night […] - may have helped me sleep). The wireless internet worked well, however the satellite TV - Dish network - seemed to work intermittently which was mildly annoying but I wasn't really watching much TV. The little 'kitchen' area was quite nice and my favorite part of the room. It was great to have a little sink for dishes, cupboard space, fridge and microwave. There was also plenty of drawer space for clothing, a nice table and chair to use as a desk and a great nightstand - with outlets on the lamp (handy for phone charging). Also I really appreciated the hot breakfast included in the stay - it was great to get up early and have my coffee, toast and eggs before setting out for my day. (There was actually a good variety of food for breakfast - cereals, eggs, pancakes, fruit, sweet rolls, yogurt, etc). The neighborhood wasn't super but not scary. As a single woman I wouldn't and didn't wander around after dark, but during the day was fine for walking about and there were several close restaurants and a great coffee bar. Similar to most Holiday Inn Expresses we have stayed in. The overall cleaniness of the rooms could have been better and the front desk staff were not very personable. The location was great considering we were visiting UCal Berkeley.

Good location, close to Berkeley campus and marina with pier. Nice room condition - like new. Found big black cockroach (alive) in my room near my suitcase. Administrator said that it never happened before. Floor in the bathroom wasn't very clean.

Having a room adjacent to the elevator made an early to bed difficult. I needed to leave the next day as I realized I was not feeling well. No way to cancel prepaid reservation. Recently had my 6th heart procedure done and I needed my rest.

We very much enjoyed our stay, including all of the room amenities. The only negatives would be that our refrigerator did not stay very cold (especially in the freezer section) due to periodic defrosting, and the plate in our microwave oven did not rotate when in use.

I stayed here for a weekend with my mom in early March to look at schools and attend a conference. The room was a great deal and the staff was super helpful. The only thing I have to complain about is that when I booked the room online (my scholarship committee paid for it with the organization's credit card), and I wasn't informed in any way that I […] would have to pay a $70 ($35 each night) room damage deposit when I arrived. I almost didn't have enough money to cover the fee and if I would have been told, my scholarship committee would have paid the fee before I got there. I even looked on the receipt and there was nothing that said I would have to pay the fee right when I got there. They were nice about it and made it clear it would be put back into my account, but that wasn't the point. What if I didn't have the extra $75 to put down? Otherwise, nice room. Read more

Nice hotel, convenient location a littel overpriced. We checked about 1 am in the morning, our first impression was, very cooperative Front desk service, even after midnight. Since we checked in verry late, we had to sleep longer on our first day, the cleaning team didn't show up after 12:30 pm that day. the second day and third day they just cleaned […] the bathroom and didn't even changed the bedsheat. After all we decided to stay five more days in the hotel, but they gave us higher price and we had to move to different rooms, which mad us to leave the hotel and found a better hotel for about the same price. The hotel is well located and maintained. Room is clean and silent. We've some comments just about breakfast: the room size is small, so frequently you have to wait to be seated. And, also, during my stay, some days there was no fruit available.

We arrived at the hotel on a sunday afternoon after a 6 hour drive from the LA area. We found the front desk clerk to be pleasant and inviting. The only drawback is neighborhood, not as inviting as others in Berkeley. Sooooo many people at breakfast, like a party. Usually, at HIE, people are in a hurry to get to morning appts, meetings, or at airport location, so I am not accustomed to a crowded breakfast. Experience at Berkeley was unusual for me--even families at HIE Berkeley!

I have stayed in a number of hotels throughout the city of Berkeley and found this Holiday Express to be much too expensive for what it is. Security and breakfast are second to none, but a double occupancy room is much too expensive compared to other neighborhood hotels.

We have stayed at this HI Express several times going back to when both of our kids were attending Cal. The staff has always been friendly and attentive. It is conveniently located to the AC Transit lines that run along San Pablo Avenue and also up University Avenue to the campus and around to College Avenue shopping and dining. On our most recent visit, […] we stayed in a "king mini-suite" - the room was generally clean with the exception of one spot on the carpet (gum or something) and missing grout in some of the floor tiles in the bathroom. Those were pretty much the limit of the room's shortcomings. Although the character of the surrounding neighborhood is not unusual for Berkeley, it is generally quiet with the exception of traffic on University Avenue, which settles down considerably at night. I picked this hotel chain because of its guaranteed quality and the breakfasts. It was a surprise to see they've added eggs (omelets) to the line up. The room was comfortable, but a little smaller than most. This is more typical of hotels in downtown areas like this one. From here you have good access to the Freeway, Marina or University.

The room was so clean anttd comfortable. The batthrootm is pretty big and clean. The lady on the breakfast buffet was very helpful. The lady on the counter though wasn't very friendly. She wasn't on the front desk when we were ready to check out. We were standing waiting for someone when the lady from the breakfast buffet asked us if we needed help. […] I told her that we're ready to check out and she just called a name ( which I really didn't pay attention to ). And the front desk lady just came out from the room in no time. So I know for sure she knows that we were there because we were just standing and talking in the front. I asked her for UC Berkely tdirection and she just told us to go left all the way without any eye contact. I felt like she's pretty irritated. I travel to the Bay area and Berkeley in particular fairly often and have paid much more to stay in worse places. The hotel seems to be newly refurbished. It's not posh, but it is comfortable. It's not in the best part of town, but it's not in the worst part, either-- as a grad student I lived only a few blocks away. There are numerous decent restaurants […] in walking distance, and it's a straight shot up University to get to (surprise) the University. The breakfast is quite decent with several options to accommodate various needs. There is a bit of an issue with the entrance/exit -- both may necessitate a trip around the block depending on where you're coming from and where you're going-- but that applies to a lot of places in Berkeley. Holiday Inn service and amenities were totally as expected - clean, comfortable room, with good facilities ( fridge and microwave), and helpful service on the front desk. The location is a little way out of downtown Berkeley, but is near to BART, nad can walk to the lakeside.
