Lovely art deco hotel, with beautiful reception room and good restaurants. Rooms on the small side (and absolutely take one with a view). Pity there is no (free) wireless in the rooms! Staff very kind and competent.

This is a '5-star' hotel and the service and accommodations warrant this rating. The hotel is extremely convienent for those wishing to explore Valletta or those wanting a base to explore the rest of Malta. The location of this hotel is ideal. It is at the end of Valetta's main drag and across the street from the main bus exchanges heading all over the island. I found the nightime desk employees particularly helpful, as well as the staff in the breakfast room, which I highly recommend. The buffet breakfast is wonderful, enhanced also by the view of the […] harbor as you eat. The pool was a plus, as was the poolside bar/food. My only complaint was the smell of smoke, both at breakfast from those nearby, and in the room. Our room was non-smoking, but the smell from others around us was quite strong in our room. The hotel gardens, while easily overlooked, are definitely worth a visit. The hotel says that it covers acres and it really does. They are well maintained and even have labled plants. We chose a superior double room which was quiet, not on the bus terminal side, and offered a lovely view of the harbour. Very clean and spacious room. The reception staff was very good but we were disappointed with bar staff. They made us feel that we were in their way. Our room was very comfortable with superb view but unfortunately it is not sound proof, the french windows would not shut tight so you could hear the traffic. Great location for exploring Valletta and Malta. Right next to Valletta's main bus station meaning pretty much anywhere on the island is only one or two bus trips away. Because of this, I'd avoid the taxis. They are expensive and the drivers have a high opinion of themselves. They refuse to use the meters and always try to charge Eu20 however long the […] trip. A two minute walk from the hotel and you're "in" Valletta. From there you are no further than a 20 minute walk from anywhere in Valletta. Impressive bar and public areas and lovely gardens with some great views over to Sliema. Staff were all very friendly, attentive, helpful and welcoming. Room was a good size and well maintained (we had two small balconies with nice rattan furniture), slightly old fashioned in its furnishings, but still comfortable. The bathroom was very poor for a hotel of this type - old fashioned and in serious need of a comprehensive refurbishment. Breakfasts were good and plenty on offer, but soya milk was not available for the dairy intolerant amongst us. A great, well run hotel in a convenient and pleasant location. Read more

Common parts and externally it's a wow. Get to the rooms and they're shabby I'm afraid. We were aware of this before so only a slight disappointment - especially the severe damp patches in the bathroom. Pool area nice but busy - rarely anyone in pool itself. Jug of cheap sangria was very expensive. Service was good and friendly but not quite there […] from all staff. General Manager, great. Didn't try the food, had breakfast elsewhere and the occasions we wanted room service at 11pm, they were on very limited menu only. Very good value could be had at so many other places too. Super hotel with friendly and helpful staff. Great location for just walking into Valletta. Echoes back to an old Colonial era, with the odd Art Deco touch here and there. We have been staying at the Phoenicia for ten years now and we have always had a relaxing and pleasant stay. The refurbished rooms we have stayed in, both harbour view and executive, have been most comfortable and very clean. However, the windows are in need of replacement. The range of food and beverages at the buffet breakfast was extensive and frequently […] replenished. We particularly appreciated our eggs being cooked to order. The majority of the waiting staff were efficient and friendly as were the reception staff. Check in and check out were speedy and smooth. The pool area is in a fantastic location, reached by way of a short walk through well tended and pretty gardens. It was picturesque and benefitted from a bar and restaurant service. The area was further enhanced by the spectacular view over Manoel Island and Sliema. I would say however that some of the sunbeds and cushions are in need of replacement. Public areas are very clean and well staffed. Free Wi-fi is available in the public lounge. On this occasion we did not use either the restaurant or the bistro in the hotel but both were fine on previous visits. Read more

The only downside to our stay at the Phoenicia was the very slow service at the evening meals. Although the staff seemed to be hurrying around we had to wait for long periods of time. On one occasion 20 mins before we saw the menu and 1 hour before we got our main course. Breakfast and lunch was very good.

It was a lovely colonial building which has aged yet retained its original charm. Its a huge step back in time in a nice way. This is not to say that the hotel looks tired. I had always wanted to stay at the Phoenecia, and was expecting grand opulence and wasn't disappointed... but its important to put things into context before you decide to stay there as some things were not as I expected. Firstly, this is an old hotel - it opened in 1947 and as such does not have the modern room layout that one would find in other, […] more modern hotels. Our first room had no balcony (we changed for one that did) and was smaller both than I expected, and the other hotels in Malta. Having said that, once you get past that, its a fine place, with a nice old world charm that makes it a great place to stay. However... be warned - the average age of the residents was somewhere around 65-70 and the level of their activity seemed to be breakfasting and then heading for the pool to read and lounge in the sun. We found 2 other couples who were as young as us and none of the oldies talked to us at all, so not a friendly social place unless you are retired. Breakfast was excellent - one of the best I have ever had - and the service was top notch, although the bar bills can be high so be warned. As 'old Malta hands' since the 1960's this was the first time we had stayed in The Phonecia although we had enjoyed afternoon tea on occasions in the past. The location at the entrance to Valetta cannot be faulted. We used the buses extensively and the terminus is directly outside the hotel. Pots of tea are produced en-mass at the beverage station where they sit until ordered. We may have been unlucky but over 5 days all our pots of tea arrived stewed. We spent several days wandering round, investigating all the little side streets, finding new places to stop for a coffee or snack and generally soaking up the atmosphere. One of the most relaxing places I've stayed, totally clean and a pleasure to stay there. Two floors of the hotel have been renovated recently, but we were in one of the older rooms. Notre séjour fut très agréable et l'hôtel est très bien placé compte tenu des bus et des monuments à visiter à La Valette. En revanche pour un hôtel de luxe la moindre des choses serait d'avoir de l'eau potable dans les chambres ou à disposition, de ne pas prévoir de peignoir troué et de faire le sol des chambres et salle de bain chaque jour!!! Stanza gradevole, buona accoglienza, gradevole il fatto di essere arrivati (10 minuti a piedi dal ferry, se non si è troppo stanchi). Si arriva dalla Valletta agevolmente anche con l'autobus di linea , va bene come punto di partenza per visitare l'isola con autobus scoperti che passano ogni 45 minuti.
