Grand Hotel Excelsior

We stayed for four nights in this marvellous hotel. Very close to Valletta. We really enjoyed our stay there! Nothing was amiss!!!

Nearly everything was terrific about the Excelsior. The employees were all very friendly, breakfast was good, and the location is a few minutes walk from the heart of Valletta. The only negative points would be that the jacuzzi was colder than the swimming pool.

Location of this hotel is great but be aware of steps that you have to climb to get to the town and bus stations. Food was really good. Dining room has a great view of the harbour. the carpets in the hotel rooms are disgusting. I had them move me from my first room because it was so bad i did not want to walk on it. While the one time courtesy ride into town was nice, the walk was very difficult.

My wife & I went for our anniversary and loved it. It was convienently close to Valetta, and they have a shuttle service that will take you all over the island. The spa is fantastic, and the pools are nice. The "private beach" isn't much, and I would hardly call it a beach, but that's not too big of a deal. Definitely would stay here again.

A true 5 star hotel. Beautiful setting, great pool and beach. Nice to swim/float in the sea off the beach of the hotel. Superior breakfast. Superb overall! one of the nicest hotels we ever stayed at. Great location in Vallenta for close by touring.

Nice service. Nice private beach with access to water. Room nice & cool during a very hot period in Malta's weather. Great location on the harbor, nice access to bus terminal, & easy walk into Valletta. Minor inconsistency with room care (coffee service, bed turn down), but only reason to not rate it perfect. I would stay there again anytime.

We could never get wash cloths and housekeeping never answered the phones. The carpet needed cleaning, the bathroom door knob kept falling off and there are no electric outlets in the bathroom. Very very nice hotel, excellent position to visit la Valletta and to visit all the nice sites and towns in Malta. The sliding door to the balcony latches behind you and there is nothing you can do to summon help except to climb over the partition to your neighbors room and knock on their window. the mgmt has removed the latch to the outside of your balcony door bc you might have someone climb over the partition and try to open the door. funny that... I suggest […] you rent a scooter, or car to get around. taxis are a ripoff, and the buses are not air conditioned, and are very well used bc the taxis are unmetered and a ripoff. the hotel has free parking which is good. I had a couple issues with the room and the engineering staff were super prompt to fix things... kudos to them.... Staff met our evey need. Hosekeeping came by to make sure every thing was okay. They did turntdown service at night and they left candy. The hotel or Expedia upgraded us to a room overlooking the harbor . Breakfest is the best I every had. Well worth the money. The hotel was beautiful from the minute you walked into the lobby. It had crystal chandeliers,marble floors and a winding staircase. The outside was surrounded by gardens and was situated right on the bay, a view of Valetta and sailboats going by. The staff was always friendly and helpful. Our room was the deluxe room with sea view and a huge breakfast […] buffet everyday. We sat on our private terrace at night and could see all the twinkling lights of the city and distant villages. Often on weekends they have festivals and fireworks at the nearby churches. The hotel is located close to Arriva bus terminal, where you can get a weekly bus pass very reasonable. Other days we just stayed at the hotel with the pool on the bay and relaxed. This hotel pays very close detail to everything from cleanliness to your overall satisfaction. After never having been to Europe, the hotel far outshined any hotels that I have been to in the United States. I returned home feeling pampered and relaxed. This hotel came very highly rated but it was very touristy with large groups all the time. The air conditioning hardly worked. I was misguided by someone providing directions and the staff were not overly friendly. Plus it was hard to get in and out of due to endless stairs and a good hike from old town.

When I checked in to the hotel during mid-afternoon, I was told my room need to be 'inspected.' I asked to meet with concierge while I waited, but he was "on lunch break." The inspection of my room took over 45 minutes while I stood idly in the lobby. The first night was extremely hot in my room. When I realized that I had no control over the thermostat, […] I called the front desk. When nobody answered, I had to get dressed again and go back to the lobby myself. The front desk informed me that the central thermostat for my room was set at 30 degrees Celsius! They begrudgingly agreed to lower it to 22 Celsius, but refused to go lower. Because my room was still too hot, I had to sleep with the window open. My room was at ground level and had no bars or screens over the window. Therefore my room was wide open to the street--very unsafe! The next morning I voiced my displeasure to the hotel staff and asked to speak with the General Manager. They told me he was not in, but that he would meet with me when he arrived. Over the course of my three day stay, I never once heard from the General Manager, not in person, not by a voicemail, not by a letter under my door. While all of these complaints may sound trivial, please recall that this is a 5-star hotel and charges as such. Therefore one expects, at a minimum, that discomforts will be promptly addressed. That is not the case at Hotel Excelsior. I would never stay there again. Read more

My only regret is that I could not stay longer. The service inside and outside of the hotel was wonderful. My friend and I did an eight hour private tour booked through the hotel and it was a perfect way to see the island especially if you are short of time. Lovely staff in all areas, very comfortable rooms, decor a little dated but good quality. Odd set-up with the mini-bar - having to order on demand what you would like (which is basically room service rather than a mini-bar, but it does remove the temptation to eat all the chips after you've had a beer)

Excellent service by staff. Excellent breakfast buffet. Room furniture is a bit dated and appears to have had better days, in particular the wardrobe. Armchair not very comfortable. You are better to walk over to the nearby cafes behind the bus station. Staff are excellent. We had a standard room which had an adjoining door to another room. This hotel is superb especially if you want to explore beautiful Valletta. It is a short walk (up some steps but manageable) into the centre to visit all of the Churches, shops, sights, film experiences or the saluting Battery. The bus depot for bus tours is also close by. All of the waiting staff were very attentive but not over the top and those on reception were always very polite and helpful. We ate most of our meals in the hotel and there was not a bad course among them. We were there during the European Film Festival and it got very busy but we never felt it was overcrowded or that they didn't have time for us. the hotel and surrondings are very much 5 star quality, the rooms are not. The first room we were in the carpet, although not technically dirty, had stains all over it. The second was marginally better. I've seen better carpets in a motorway travelodge, not something that you'd expect from a 5 star hotel!

The centre of Valletta is a very brief walk away, so the hotel is conveniently situated for ease of access. They were also prepared to arrange transport for other tourist visits involving taxis etc. My only issue on staffing was that we left for […] our flight early on the Saturday morning and there was only one member of staff on reception for checkouts. As there were a number of other guests also aiming for early flights, the process was slower than it should have been.
