"Poor maintenance and quality control."
I recently stayed at Casa Munras during a over night trip to Monterey. I was in room 28 on April 7, 2013. My check in was late otherwise theres a possibility some of this could have been addressed but still was rather frustrating. First it was noted my TV would not power up. There was considerable howling of wind through the hotel which made sleeping a challenge and was further complicated by the toilet coming on filling approximately every hour or two. Then in the morning was pleased to find that despite the poor water pressure i was standing in two inches of water within a couple minutes. In my frustration i mentioned it to the staff at the desk as I checked out so hopefully someone else won't have to deal with the same issues. By external appearances I would have expected more. The hotel must have been a renovation from an old motel or a apartment complex because the bathroom was from the 60s and the layout was odd. Also the bed was extremely uncomfortable since it sank in the middle and my girlfriend and I kept trickling into the middle all throughout the night. "Not Worth the Money"
This hotel has really small rooms. We stayed at a much cheaper motel in the area the night before, and it was almost double the space. The room had a nasty stale smell, which had been masked by the scent of cleaning products. The pillows are tiny and the blankets starched stiff. "Lost it's luster"
Casa Munras has a great location but has lost it's luster. Went for a fourth romantic getaway and was disappointed, Humming noise all night long, safe door kept popping open causing the closet door to get stuck. My wife and I have vacationed in Monterey almost annually for over 30 years and have stayed at Casa Munrus several times. The location is very convenient to Alvarado Avenue and all its restaurants and the Osio Theatre and you can walk to Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row. The room included a make-up mirror and full sized hair dryer. Because of the hotels […] many small buildings, there is a one way traffic system. Parking is insuffecient for the number of rooms. If your room is at the far end of the property, you may actually be forced to drive off the property if you cannot find parking near your room. Trying to find parking after 5pm on the property is a challenge. While the rooms have always been very clean, they lack refrigerator and microwave. Our room on our latest stay was small, so there was no room for a table and only one chair. The closet which was large enough had one small sliding door that meant you cannot fully use the closet. The only light near the closet is inside the closet and the switch was on the fixture. My wife, who is short, could not reach the switch. For some reason, the thermostat for the heater was on the door jam. Adjusting the heat was not easy because of the draft from the door. The hotel appears nice but after staying there you notice that the walls are extremely thin. Normal conversations could clearly be heard from the room next door. "Micro-sized room, close to Denny's"
This hotel had a great staff and nice lobby, but I rate hotels on the amenities and location. The rooms were smaller than I've ever experienced, even smaller than downtown Paris France. They all have outside access instead of inside, like a motel. The single bed was only a Queen size, and the mattress was newer but cheap as there were already "troughs" […] on each side. Laying in the middle met you with a ridge/lump in your back. We both had back and neck aches in the AM. There was no room to set up a laptop for the internet, so my computer never left the case. The room walls were so thin, we could hear the other patrons and their plumbing at all hours. The shutters were so bad, they let in so much light when closed that you can't sleep in late, bummer as we wanted to sleep in after the trip and New Years Day. The heater (no AC) was probably installed in the 1960s and had only three modes: off, hot, and stifling HOT. The location was a longer walk than many to the warf and downtown. "Falls short of the mark"
I picked Casa Munras for a weekend getaway based on price & reviews. I wasn't expecting the room to look like it came out of the 1990s. There was a CRT TV & broken remote. The bathroom was akin to my college dorm one – except that this one lacked ventilation. There were holes in the ugly tiles that had been sloppily caulked in. The down pillows had […] lumps I just couldn't shake out. I found bits of trash around. The rain gutter was defective by my room, so it sounded like I was staying next to Niagara Falls. Even worse, this hotel is next to a restaurant with live music between 10PM-1AM. The front desk called the police about the noise, but that did nothing to make up for my sleepless night. I requested a room change the next night & was moved to a room facing the pool. I immediately saw differences in the room quality– LCD TV, renovated bathroom with ventilation(!), & a clean floor. The pillows seemed a bit more uniform in firmness/texture. Unfortunately, the loud music prevented me from getting sleep that night too. The property appears charming & peaceful. This tranquility is shattered by the obnoxious live music from the restaurant next door. I was shocked by how little sleep I got on vacation at this hotel. The staff was pleasant & responsive. Some of the rooms need serious renovation – I’m guessing it’s the ones in the back. The beds were comfy, the room was clean. However there are not L'occitane bathroom supplies as mentioned and advertised. The hot tub is only accessible by paying an additional fee and using the spa. We ended up going to the Vista Blue Spa at Monterey Plaza Hotel if we were going to pay for spa services just to use the hot tub. Thought is would be a great hotel since it was a 4 star hotel. The hotel is very old and so are the rooms. Bathroom is very out dated. Had a barking dog next to us. "Motel not a hotel"
Converted overpriced motel with nice furnishings but still a cheesy motel. Room was clean though the housekeeper walked in without knocking first. Electric wall heaters with no A/C and no heat in the bathroom. Shower stall with no tub. Another guest charged their meals to my room and the hotel manager told me to take it up with the chef. "Too Noisy"
I have been wanting to stay at this hotel for a while now. I am a youth pastor for a church in San Jose, CA and we have annual retreats so I'm always looking for great hotels. The look and feel of Casa Munoz is great but it was so noisy that my wife and I had a horrible night sleep. We were in a queen bedroom upstairs so maybe a King would be better […] and it could have been where our rooms were located. Also their were pets barking and car alarms going off constantly. I worked at a hotel and we would take each guests car information down and if their alarm went off security quickly took care of it. The security as well as making sure we were safe also help to keep things quite. What surprised me was that we were there on a Tuesday and it was so loud. "A Motel 6 with a nicer bed"
When I first stepped into the room I was disappointed, simply because I was expecting a lot more for the money I had paid. The building seemed very old and not maintained very well. For example some of the wall was crumbling around one of the electrical plugs and one of the window cranks had broken off. The interior was, quite frankly, like a cheap […] Motel, but with a nicer bed (mattress, comforter, pillows were all higher end). The room was also blasting hot when I arrived and the nob for turning the heater off didn't work. I called the front desk and they promptly sent a maintenance person to disable the heater, but it kind of reinforced the idea for me that I should have saved a few bucks by just going to a cheap motel, since that was kind of what we were getting at Casa Munras. The hotel had a construction project going on during our stay. It was extremely loud, and it started very early. When we called at 7:30, their solution was earplugs, which did not help with the walls shaking. They should have notified us of the construction before booking the hotel.
