"Not the greatest, but I did have place to sleep."
Old, rather run-down. Carpet was filthy. Building was noisy. Had to call the front desk twice about drunks across the hall. Front desk was very helpful and took care of the problem. It would be nice if breakfast hours could have started earlier than 6:30am. Planning two more trips to Cedar Rapids and we will not be staying at Howard Johnsons.Genuine Expedia guest review

We had the room closest to the front desk which was extremely convenient for loading/parking and breakfast, but there were TVs blaring and loud conversations going on quite late from other parts of the hotel. I had read other reviews, so wasn't surprised by things like a musty smell or the bathtub not draining quickly. I was surprised by the fact that […] the window was open (which I discovered after seeing a large spider on the wall) even though the curtains were closed. "A Very Rundown Howard Johnson Trying to Stay Afloa"
Quite simply, other reviewers may have had better and simpler experiences but we arrived late at night to groups of fellow residents wandering the parking lot and rear patio, a mistakenly booked single double bed instead of two beds, stains on the comforters, sheets and pillow cases as well as numerous cigarette burns throughout our non-smoking room. […] We were graciously afforded a new room with two beds but it too was riddled with stains across all linens and more cigarette burns in a non-smoking room. It was very tempting to simply abandon our understandably cheap night's stay for the much newer built Fairfield Inn a few steps up the hill behind the Howard Johnson. When we drove up there was a group of people sitting/standing outside the front door smoking -- including the desk clerk. It was not very expensive, and convenient for the night. The hotel itself is rather run down, and the beadspreads were worn and stained. The service is great and friendly. Walked it the room and noticed the plaster on the ceiling was falling off. The hallways smell like cigarettes and fried chicken. There was a LOUD party next across the hall that didn't end till 3 in the morning and the people upstairs must have been doing jumping jacks all night cause the stomping never quit. "Will not stay again"
I was not impressed with this room or this hotel. When I booked my room I did not realize I was given a smoking room. There was a law passed a few years ago in Iowa that banned smoking in public places. Since then, I have not seen a hotel in Iowa with smoking rooms. I asked if it was possible to switch my room to a non-smoking room, but nothing else […] was available. Then, the front desk clerk informed me that the "public rents a private room" at the Howard Johnson so they could have smoking rooms if they wanted. The room was gross. It had red shag like carpet and you could see all sorts of lint and other things on the floor. There were even cigarette ashes in one of the corners of the room on the floor. It was apparent the room had not been vacummed. There were cigarete burns all over the comforter and mattress and there was even a hole cut into the mattress over one of the springs. I checked the bed on 3 different occasions for bed bugs. In the morning, after I showered, I had to wear shoes around the room because I did not feel comfortable walking on the floor barefoot. I was in Cedar Rapids for a weekend event and it was very difficult to find a hotel room anywhere in the city. The staff was very nice but the hotel itself was kind of gross. The sheets were stained. The room was freezing (the heat wasn't on in the room and it took a couple of hrs to heat up) and it was def smaller than the pictures on the website showed. It was def a hotel where I felt the need to sleep in all my clothes and where socks or shoes around the […] room. On the plus side the bed was VERY comfortable.
