Hotel still under renovation, but very clean and quiet. Rooms are large and have been upgraded. Breakfast was adequate, coffee very good.

Located conveniently, easy to get to, pleasant front room staff and a good breakfast - and the price was reasonable. Not a fancy place, but not a dump - We thought it was a good price point for a weekend stay near the college and the beach. Family friendly with indoor pool, close to restaurants.

The surrpounding area were a few other budget motels, fast food restaurants and a strip mall. The access road was not the best of conditions, parked tractor trailers were lining the road making it difficult to see when entering and leaving places. They did try to present the hotel decently but there were hairs in the bath tub, some where stuck to the […] glue of the anti-slip mat on the tub floor, the closure for the tub drain did not work properly and there was no guide for TV channel selections and the TV did not operate like other standard hotel TV's. The free wireless access also did not work correctly. When trying to access standard websites errors would be displayed and I ended up using my mobile phone for a modem and chewed through a chunck of my monthly data plan. The front desk staff was pleasent. The hotel has renovations going on with caution tape in areas. My biggest frustration was being told by the head housekeeper that it was a requirement that she enter our room. We try to be eco friendly and reuse towels and didn't feel we needed the room cleaned. When I asked to just have a new garbage bag and no need […] for the room being cleaned she demanded that it be entered and cleaned. The housekeeping staff also entered our room without knocking while we were in our room relaxing. I travel quite frequently and have never had this type of experience. I was there 3 weeks prior to this visit, and the spa jets were broken. Again, the spa jets were broken. However, the bed is the most comfortable I have ever slept in. Hotel is getting a little older and showing it a little. It is on a city street that could use repaving. It is close to a grocery and pharmacy. Walking distance to espresso stand. It is convenient to the freeway.

I have never had such terrible customer service! They insisted they had to charge us for a rollaway bed that I was told when making the reservation that the price included it since the room was listed as sleeping 5. When I asked to talk to the manager she insisted it has nothing to do with them and hotels.com is the problem and they have no relationship […] with them, this hotel is in business to make money and it's not her problem that our stay in there left us feeling very upset and vunhappy. Staff is friendly. Any request we had was met and completed almost immediately. Hotel operators should keep these people. However, the hotel is showing its age. My only complaint was I wish the breakfast area was larger with more tables. People had to stand to eat their breakfast, and it was very crowded just preparing your food. Other than that, our stay was great! The staff were the nicest and most helpful I have seen in a long time. I will definitely recommend this hotel to others.

I usually stay in the Quality Inn just down the road from this hotel, but I was with a large group and this one had a better rate. No I see why....the plumbing was bad, the toilet never flushed completely, the water in the shower and sink ran out brown and the room just looked run down. We booked 2 rooms for 2 nights so we could go to the Humboldt State open day on 4/13/12. When we arrived the night manager told us one room was in the back and one up the hall at the street side of the hotel. He said without the credit card that was used to book the rooms he was not going to let them in. He told them that it was posted online that you need that same card number... I've stayed at four of the competitors in the immediate neighborhood. The Howard Johnson Express is the one I would choose to go back to. The motel provided everything I had expected, a clean comfortable room, hotel service that got the job done, and a reasonable feeling of being safe which isn't the case at some of the motels in the neighborhood.

Nice place. Room was comfortable, had no issues. Be warned second floor you have to use stairs, no elevator. There is a hundred dollar deposit and they will inspect your room before you get it back, so if you plan on smoking indoors stay somewhere else.
