Sheraton Kauai Resort

The best thing about this hotel was its location, right on a beautiful beach, with beautifully landscaped grounds, and two restaurants with great ocean views. Staff didn't give us a king bed as requested, but offered to change our room for the remaining 3 nights. First room was showing age and the tub drain didn't work, but the room move went off without […] a hitch and the second room had the king bed and a working tub. We really enjoyed our stay and had expected to pay more for the location, but didn't expect a "resort charge" to be tacked onto the bill when we got there. I suppose I should have read the hotels.com fine print more carefully, but it started us off with a feeling of hidden charges for "services" that are usually included in the price (like Wi-Fi). We had a pleasant stay at Sheraton. The valet parking on the day of arrival was really helpful to getting acclimated to the new environment. The fireplace area offered a great way to relax in the evening. The resort is near Poipu beach, which is one of the best beaches in the world.

I cannot say enough good things about this hotel and the only negative would be that there is not a microwave in the room, which only affected us when we wanted to have popcorn or heat up leftovers from dinner. Our view was outstanding; we highly recommend getting an ocean view and getting a 2nd floor on the far side of the hotel (in front of the black […] lava rocks) because it is intimate and quiet. The rooms are big enough for a family of 4 even with a rollaway. The Ocean Wing was excellent! It was recently renovated. The view was perfect. Furniture was in great shape. Service was superb. The only negatives were the AC was somewhat loud and the mattress too soft.

I was unsure about the hotel because of the reviews, but we are very glad that we stayed there. The grounds are incredible, views are amazing, and we enjoyed the food; my teenage son is VERY fussy and even he enjoyed the food - especially the breakfast buffet. The PC lounge was very convenient. If I were to change one thing about the hotel, I would have the music by the pool intermittent rather than constant. We enjoyed the food and stores at the shopping village that you get to by walking through the plantation across the street. Activities we loved: helicopter tour, snorkeling cruise of Napali coast (take something if you think you might get seasick - seas are rough), ATV tour, Zip line and tube tours, and botanical garden. We wanted to do the bike ride down Waimea canyon - but it was closed due to a fire in the canyon. We really did not care for Smith's luau - we left - the food was poor and it had an unhappy and hokey ambience. The advice to buy beach chairs and boogey board at K-Mart or Walmart was great. The Sheraton has a perfect location and beautiful views. Whether you pick the garden or ocean rooms I believe you will have an amazing time. Staff is wonderful. They have two pools which I'm not sure anyone even knows the one exists as when I went to it we were the only people swimming in it. The second pool is much more active and near the ocean and […] food service. The only two things I would like to see improved is some method of enforcing no holding of lounge chairs near the pool. I witnessed multiple occasions where families come down 7:30 in the morning lay out towels or magazines and then don't come to the pool until 1 or 2pm. Cruises have a 40 min policy in place now-a-days where if a lounge chair in not being used for 40 mins the contents are removed; I recommend this method. The other thing I would like to see improved is the menu for dinner at RumFire. It could be significantly better but it didn't bother us because there are other locations where you can eat dinner but I wouldn't eat there more than once currently. Make sure you choose their breakfast plan. It's well worth it especially if you do not plan on driving to another location for breakfast. Read more

It's a good buffet but doubt you'll want to pay $23 extra per person per day for it. Fridge in room but no microwave. Take a morning walk to nearby breakfast places. And make sure you walk through the very nearby Plantation Gardens (free) which also has a good restaurant. Plenty of good restaurants on this south side of the island where the pace seems more relaxed than in some areas up north and east...which are short drives away and must-visit area of this easy-paced island.
