Sugar was once king in Hilo. Now, the town is known for its bay, shops, and farmers market that teems with exotic fruit. Swaying hips abound at Hilo’s Merrie Monarch Festival, a week-long hula contest held after Easter. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is nearby. There, Kilauea is the hottest attraction as one of the world’s most active volcanoes. At its helm is Pele, the Hawaiian volcano goddess.

The view of the waterfall and the surrounding rain forrest were well worth the trip.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"The Falls are the High Point!"
Magnificent setting! After recent rains, the waterfall was splendid and we could both see and hear it from our room. The owners of 20 years must have had their work cut out for them, clearing, planting, and creating some beautiful paths that go down to the waterfall and follow the river. Had it been warmer and sunnier, we would have loved to swim in […] the natural pool at the base of the falls. I strongly recommend getting there before dark, because the road leading to the Inn is well pot-holed in one section, narrow and dark as it passes through what is largely an agricultural area. That's not a critcism, it just is what it is. The owners were nice enough, but not nearly as engaging as those of other B&B's in which we've stayed--almost seemed kind of distant. In general, the exterior of the main building, decks, patios and stairs could use some work--maybe a good power-washing and some paint. Muddy boots left on the front porch of the owners entrance didn't make a good first impression. Our room, on the other hand, was clean and decorated nicely. We met some nice folks from around the country over a breakfast on the lanai of fresh waffles or eggs cooked to order. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"The Inn at Kulaniapia Falls"
Not too far out of town, but we got lost. Pretty drive to hotel, beautiful gardens, bamboo garden was amazing and view from bottom so peaceful. The property was very well maintained and beautiful. We did not see anybody from the Inn during our stay. We got there, our key was in our door, nobody to welcome us, we had to leave early and would have liked […] to have breakfast a little earlier, but we had to go search for the property manager, so we just skipped breakfast. Would have been nice to have some interaction with somebody running the Inn. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"5 star location, 1 star room"
It is really difficult to rate this B&B as a whole thing, so I will do it in parts. Location: 5 stars. It is in the middle of a rainforest overlooking a beautiful waterfall. Nice hikes throughout the property. A small minus - add 15-20 minutes to your drive time - because to get anywhere you have to go back to Hilo. Breakfast: 5 stars. Eggs cooked […] to order, local sweet breads, fruit, juices, waffles... Small minus - they only serve it 8-9 am, so if you want to leave the hotel before that time - you are out of luck :( Staff: 5 stars for the girls cooking breakfast, 0 stars for the rest of the staff because it was simply non existent. No check-in, nothing. Towels were changed daily but room wasn't cleaned. The whole absence of staff felt like we were kind of invading somebody else's property, which is partially true because the owners of this B&B live in the same building. Room: 1 star. A twenty-dollar-a-night motel in the middle of nowhere has better rooms. The room had no tv, no a/c or heat (and it was COLD at night), no hangers in the closet, mold everywhere. There was only one tiny dresser in the room, and all the drawers in it were broken. Furniture looked like it was at least 50 years old. Shower was a joke, it was so small that you couldn't turn around in it, and it didn't have a single shelf to put your stuff on. BUT: if you are on the Big Island, you probably wouldn't be spending much time in your room anyway. We only slept and showered in there, so it was OK. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Inn @ Kulaniapia Falls - private waterfall"
Private waterfall and breakfast are great, but the basic necessities of a hotel room were lacking. Beds are old, you can feel the springs; dead mosquitoes all over the room; shower heads are terrible - water doesn't spray out of the nozzle very well. It was an OK stay, and if the above wouldn't bother you, I'm sure you'd have a good time, but for me, […] one night was enough. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"MIXED BAG"
I chose this location first because of the photo's on their website. It is a lovely place, very scenic and away from the hustle of traffic. The rooms are nicely finished and the bed was very comfortable. We stayed in the King Kamehameha room and had a great view of both the waterfall and the city of Hilo. It did take a minute or two before getting hot […] water to arrive in the shower the first day, but it was quicker the remainder of our stay. The trails down to the falls and the bamboo forest were well groomed and offered some great views. The road from town to the Inn was a pain at times. I didn't mind the distance of the drive but part of the road nearer to Hilo was in poor shape. And the part through the mac nut farm offered little space to pull over to oncoming traffic, although that didn't occur too often. Due to being early risers, we didn't eat breakfast there until the last day of our stay. It was pleasant, with fresh fruit and juice along with eggs and potatoes. I was a little concerned about the lack of a/c, but the temps drop at night and it never was a problem. The frogs do make their presence known at night, but the sound of the waterfall blends together with the croaking and isn't as intrusive as one might think. I'm not a B&B person, but I enjoyed my stay here. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Oops unable to lock Pagoda"
This is a hotel with a very nice location. However there were two major problems while we were there the regular owners were away and no one seemed to know what they were doing. We stayed in the Pagoda which had an amazing view of the waterfall however you could not lock it so this caused a large security issue, for my wife and I. Another Issue is […] the Pagoda itself was not constructed very well at all, and the carpet upstairs smelt dank from the humidity and mouldy. The construction seemed incomplete. But if you like to stay in a place where you are not disturbed and left to your own devices then this is the one. The breakfast each day was good. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Less worse in Hilo"
The inn is quite far from Hilo (6km). A small dark road brings you to the hotel that is close to falls in the middle of nowhere. Inn is not bad, you don't meet owners neither for checkin nor checkout. You go straight to room and leave. No breakfast facilities or restaurant of any time. No minibar or any vending machine. Parking area is nice, it is not […] a problem. The owner has a nice dog, very quite and friendly. For more than a day probably it is too much especially because from hilo to the inn it takes time and a narrow unpleasant road. No air con in the room, even if not required (it rains every day in Hilo).
Genuine Expedia guest review

"Inn at Kululiapia Falls près de Hilo (Hi)"
