Overlooking Hilo Bay, the Castle Hilo Hawaiian Hotel enjoys a beautiful location in Hilo, Hawaii. Hilo is a quaint, flower-filled retreat with Victorian homes and a restored downtown area that experiences more rain than any other American city. The Big Island of Hawaii offers a plethora of recreational opportunities. From surfing and scuba diving to volcano and waterfall exploration, there is something for everyone. Old banyan trees line the drive to the hotel, most of which were planted in the 1930's by celebrities such as Babe Ruth, Amelia Earhart and Cecil B. DeMille. Mauna Kea looms in the background and the arched bridge that leads to Coconut Island is only steps from the doors of the resort. The hotel is flanked by a beautiful beach, the Liliuokalani Gardens and the Naniloa Country Club.

Beautiful setting, w/large rooms, great ocean views, & conveniently located w/in walking distance to several restaurants. The landscaping is well-groomed but it’s clear the facility is aging, badly. The staff was courteous, professional & attentive. The in-room coffee was good, exactly as you would expect on Kona. The hotel has Wi-Fi in the lobby, but […] in the rooms you’re stuck with Ethernet cable for about $11 a day. Beyond that, it gets worse. My both bed sheets & towels felt cheap & threadbare, the pillows (I had only two on a king size bed) should have been retired long ago, interior painted surfaces are dingy, carpet is worn out & the cabinetry, furniture, plumbing & lighting fixtures are all extremely outdated & worn. In fact the overall decor reminds me of those kitschy Miami Vice-80's-era pastels & is desperately in need of renovation. That said, there really aren't any other good options in town so this property like the others sadly has no incentive to invest in improvements. Perhaps this is why their hotel room rates are so reasonable, compared to other cities in Hawaii? If you care more about a convenient location in a beautiful setting w/ nice staff & clean & affordable rooms than you do nice appointments & aesthetics, this is a good choice for you; it's not like you have a lot of choices in this town, so if you truly want a first-class facility & can spare a 3 Hour Drive to Kona (or an $80 flight,) that may be worth well the trouble. "Nice hotel but very dated rooms."
This hotel was recommended to me by a co-worker and he told me it was the nicest hotel in Hilo. I take this co-worker's advice with a grain of salt due to fact that he believes the Place Station in Las Vegas in a "great place to stay". Anyway, back to the hotel, thus place is really two hotels in one. The lobby and restaurant areas have a modern look […] to them and offer great views of the water and the mountains. Now to the rooms, the hallways are a little dingy but that doesn't properly prepare you for what you find when you enter your room. The rooms while very clean and large (king size bed) appear to be decorated with the 1970's in mind. There is no WiFi in rooms but there is paid wired Internet access available for a very modest price when compared to other hotels. I used an air card so I can not comment in the Internet speed. Overall I would rate my stay very positive and I would stay here again chiefly due to the quality of the other accommodations in the area. "Best Hotel On Banyan Drive"
Yes, yes the hotel is dated, but it is the nicest one on Banyan drive (Believe me I've stayed at few other ones on "the drive" an then discovered the Hilo Hawaiian). I've been in Hilo multiple times for business and will only stay at the Hilo Hawaiian for now on. The hotel staff is super friendly and nice. The hotel is in a beautiful location near the airport; I found it very convenient. The hotel has flashes of it's former grandeur and I can imagine this was a desired destination a generation back. "Best in Hilo Town- Hands Down"
I've stayed at a few hotels in Hilo town, even though I live in Kona, and this hotel is by far the best you will find in Hilo town. The rooms are spacious and decent and the location is close to everything, including the airport. Ample parking and restaurants nearby. Nice hotel for a brief stay to get a feel of Hilo. Not too much but clean and incredible view of the Bay that will surprise you upon sunrise!
