Sugar was once king in Hilo. Now, the town is known for its bay, shops, and farmers market that teems with exotic fruit. Swaying hips abound at Hilo’s Merrie Monarch Festival, a week-long hula contest held after Easter. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is nearby. There, Kilauea is the hottest attraction as one of the world’s most active volcanoes. At its helm is Pele, the Hawaiian volcano goddess.

This hotel is very dated. For 2 adults we got 2 towels, and 2 small pillows for a king size bed. No blow dryer in the bathroom. They cater to a large tourist bus crowd. The location may have been at one time in a prime location, but is now in a very depressed area.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

In all of our Castle Resorts & Hotels properties we provide our beautiful compendium placed on the bed which explains the amenities we provide for all of our valued guests like you. Extra pillows are in the vanity area shelf and more can be requested with housekeeping. We also provide irons, ironing boards, and blow dryers at no extra charge. We are also in the process of refreshing our guest rooms with the model rooms being worked on as we speak. Refreshing of our guest rooms are scheduled to begin in mid-April of 2013. I am positive all of our guests will enjoy our efforts.

"Room felt gross"
The only thing I enjoyed about the room was the balcony, with a view of Hilo Bay. The furnishings were old and a little smelly, the bedspreads were old and faded, and there was mildew all over the ceiling of the cramped bathroom. other than being a convient location, this hotel is completely run-down and outdated. the hotel was clean but still felt dirty since it was so outdated. very over priced for the room, paid more for small balcony to look out at nothing, couldn`t get close to water for rocks. sounded like fake birds in the trees which was annoying, staff was rude, laundry was in garage area. food was not that good for price and nothing was close for sightseeing and closed the pool at 7pm...never go back there again!! "Disappointing"
Rooms not cleaned daily and service very hit and miss. Some days the room was cleaned well and others not at all. There were drink rings on the bedside table for 3 days and the glass table wasn't cleaned until I made a complaint. No one listened on my first complaint, had to ask for a manager the next day. Our bathroom had wallpaper hanging off the […] wall and the main room had a massive patch of black mildew in the corner - very healthy! Thankfully the view out of the window was beautiful and distracted from the mildew. The service in the hotel again was hit and miss. Used the restaurant one night for the buffet and service was fine apart from nothing for a vegetarian - quite poor for this day and age - and when we went to use it again was told our food would be over one hour yet the place was half empty. "convenient but not clean"
Arrived late evening. Very unwlecome reception and who was more insistent about how much they would fine a "smoker" than what the hotel had to offer. The bed linen had not been changed - that was more than obvious (wont go into detail). being late from travel, we kept some clothes on and decided to lay on top. In addition, the counterpain was bry-nylon […] and has not been washed or refreshed for so long that its smell filled the room on entry. Hotel is very tired and out of date and run down. Showers hot but antiquated. Service in the restaurant was bruske. Food adequate only but fits the price. Convenience to Hilo Downtown - it's a 5 minute drive but not an easy walk due to busy main highways, despite website indicating it is. It's used by the big coach companies who presumably subject their guests to one nights stay and move on. "Old and uncomfortable"
I booked 2 superior rooms and got 2 horrible rooms. No refridgerator, no hairdryer, no balcony and old uncomfortable beds! The headboards were dusty and we received no housekeeping one day! "Not impressed"
Stayed here 20 years ago and I doubt it has had a dime spent on it since. The place smells musty, is old and run down. The food in the restaurant was cheap and reasonable but didn't drink the water as it tasted funny. Its a million dollar view and a ten dollar hotel. The bed was comfortable and at least there were no bed bugs as I had read someone had […] experienced. The room was of a decent size. The whole place just needs a few million spent on it to upgrade it. There are no decent hotels in Hilo so I would have thought one that stood out from the rest would have made a fortune.
