Sugar was once king in Hilo. Now, the town is known for its bay, shops, and farmers market that teems with exotic fruit. Swaying hips abound at Hilo’s Merrie Monarch Festival, a week-long hula contest held after Easter. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is nearby. There, Kilauea is the hottest attraction as one of the world’s most active volcanoes. At its helm is Pele, the Hawaiian volcano goddess.

Overall this hotel is a good place to arrive from the continent since the flights often arrive late in the evening, it is very near the airport and easy to get to. I can't recommend this hotel for longer stays. The parking lot is crowded and hard to manage. Late arrivals will have a hard time. The room was clean, but old, and musty. As other reviewers […] mentioned, the walls are thin, including out to the common areas. You can hear every conversation within 50 feet. I have not tried other hotels in Hilo, so I can't compare. "great place for the money"
Nice place for the money, close to the airport. I had read on previous reviews that this place was dirty and had bugs, I think that people just like to complain. We had a good experience at this hotel and will stay again, Great place for the money!!! Oh and go to the resturant in the hotel and get their banana bread BEST in HawaiiGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Close to many things on Wikiki. The beach, restaurants and lots of stores are within close range. The parking was terrible. We weren't the only ones struggling to fit a mini van into a smart-car-sized parking space! The Parking was difficult to find in the first place, located under the hotel. Lots of the noises you find in a major city can be heard […] most of the night, which Isn't the hotels fault. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"On a main road, walking distance to food and drink"
Older hotel but nicely maintained. Room was clean and quiet. Nice garden atmosphere and pool area. Efficient, friendly, and helpful staff. Near downtown Hilo at the beginning of Banyan Drive and close to airport. Restaurants, drive-in food within walking distance. No bugs, lots of hot water. "Best in Hilo"
We have stayed at the three hotels in Hilo on or near Banyon Drive. We think that this is the best hotel of the three, as it is always very clean. The hotel is Hawaiian family owned and operated. When we drove up in our rental car this trip, one of the staff was on her knees scrubing the front steps. The bed is comfortable. The hair dryer provided will […] dry my thick long hair. A small refrigerator, coffee making machine, and shampoo are part of the room amentities. The negative is the hotel furniture, carpet, etc is dated and the hotel has no elevator to the upper floors. Kona has more selection and better places to stay, but further from the beautiful things that we love to see. The Hilo side of the island is the green side with Rainbow & Akaka Falls. The volcano park is also closer to this side of the island. We have stayed here before and would recommend to others if visiting this island. Staff is friendly and helpful. Terrible. This is the worst part of my vacation. This hotel is 3 stories, but has no elavator. The place smell terrible. I better stop, cause I have nothing good to say about this place.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very Convenient Location"
The location is very convenient. It is just off the airport, about 10 minute drive from the terminal. About equidistant (10 min. drive) from snorkeling beaches and downtown Hilo. The room was not luxurious, but it was clean and certainly adequate for the price. The room had a window air conditioner, ceiling fan, flat screen TV, and small refrigerator. […] There was WiFi available in the room for extra fee, but free WiFi in the lobby. The bathroom was quite dated and small, but clean and adequate. The staff was very friendly and helpful. This hotel is dated, but clean and well-maintained, with a very friendly staff. It is a good value for the price. I would stay there again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Breakfast was good. The place is okay for the value. but it needs renovation. Refrigerator was mini microwave size - We did not need it but would like to inform you. it's not the standard minis that you find in other hotels.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"It's not always about the visual"
Old place with its own type of character. Location is good with a decent view, but its not the four star place that one might like. For the price its OK. The service that we recieved there was Excellent with good advice and smiles abound. The room is tight, so if you want to cram four with a lot of stuff you will be pressed; still, it is clean and comfortable […] for 2-3. Attached restaurant is perfect for convienence and ease, but other small places in town make for a better meal experience. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Hilo Seaside Hotel"
The Hilo Seaside was clean but very, very tired looking. It looked like I had gone back in time. The walls were very thin and there was noise from other rooms as well as loud cars and motorcycles outside. The back parking lot was only accessible by key before 8:00 pm, but the room key hardly ever worked. Basically but there is very little choice in […] hotels if staying in the Hilo area. "HILO Seaside Hotel in Big Island"
Well, it is not a 5 star hotel. it is the type of hotel for a hard working class type of person. it is clean, people were very friendly. the room, had a tv, two beds, a mini bar fridge and an simple bathroom. i asked the staff for a microwave and they were more than happy to bring one to my room. Listen, it is a fantastic hotel when travelling on a […] budget, much better than a backpaking hostel. there is a bus stop near for the bus that takes you into Hili town. there are beaches around but they are not as great as the ones in kona. Overall, it was a pleasent, down to earth, simple hotel with great staff who are going to make your stay enjoyable and relax. i went with my 14yrs old son onlyh and we loved it. we are going back next year to explore the rest of the volcanoes!! "No elevator, cramped lobby"
We stayed at this hotel for just one day. This place is very old. Rooms are not tidy, appliances are old and if you have lots of luggage, there are not elevators!!! Location of the place is not too bad. Views of the back waters are good. Somehow, not worth the price I should say.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"1st time here, love the local scene!"
Usually I stay at Kona Seaside and get a condo in Hilo for 2 months but this time I only had a few days Hilo-side so stayed here. Love the ambiance, the great breakfast, the staff! Support locally owned business!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Support Hawaiian family owned business"
Always stay here and at the Kona Seaside and Maui Seaside if you want the best experience, most clean, most friendly all local family owned places in the Islands. If they make mistakes they are very quick to remedy them with a prompt apology and service.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Rooms with a view offer terrific value"
As others have written, this is not a four star resort. It is a terrific 'Mom& Pop' Hawaiian-family owned hotel, with its own local color charm. Loved the open air lobby - a very peaceful place to check internet and watch the koi pond. Rooms with lanai, esp. 2nd & 3rd floor rooms with view across the harbor are the ones to seek out. Otherwise, rooms […] in the back mostly look out on the parking lot. There are rooms with pool area view and interior courtyard garden, but the front views are the best! Ok hotel for nights sleep and shower. Nice Coy pond and there is a little lake across the street. Room kind of small but clean. Didnt check out the restaurant but it looked ok and close. "Not bad for 1 night"
We stayed one night on our trip around the island. Pretty clean, but old. Not bad for the price. I wouldn't stay for more than a few days.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
This hotel was in a great location to explore the volcanoes and beautiful coast near Hilo. It included a wonderful breakfast with a choice of three different options. The room was comfortable and clean with a balcony, and the pool was nice. The only drawback was the shower that is rather short- however despite that it was good value for the price. Our […] room overlooked a pretty pond with fish. "Hilo Seaside"
decent hotel for a quick visit to Hilo. This was a very busy hotel when we checked in on the 4th so my review of the hotel service might be strained a bit. It took a long time just to get checked in. The parking was a bit strange since you had to park across the street or around the corner. Then is was a long walk through the hotel to the room. Breakfast […] was a choice of three different platters at the adjoining restaraunt where you are expected to tip. We tipped $1 for great service the first morning only to get lousy service the next time. So we tipped $.50. The breakfast is light but good. Hotel is very dated, but it still looks nice enough. All in all, a decent stay, but for a more relaxing luxurious visit, stay elswhere. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Clean but OLDer motel- Just the basics"
Location was best thing about this motel. Close to Hilo airport and within a moderate 45 mins drive to the Volcano area which was our purpose in visiting the Big Island. "A Good Value Hotel"
We were looking for a nice hotel at a good price and the Hilo Seaside Hotel met our needs The hotel proudly acknowledges that it is owned by Hawaiians and maintains that theme throughout the hotel. The staff is very friendly and takes care of their guests. When I asked about one of the local attractions, staff pulled out a whole box of brochures. The […] front of the hotel overlooks the bay. It's located a mile from downtown Hilo and 29 miles from Volcano National Park. The best feature was a free hot breakfast with three menu choices: My wife liked the coconut syrup on the hot cakes. That breakfast kept us going for the whole morning. Our room was among several in a single story building with a beautiful garden separating it from another row of rooms. The rooms had louvered windows that offered comfortable ventilation in the room. The good news is that the hotel is close to the Hilo International Airport for easy arrivals and departures. Just remember that this convenience is offset by the sounds of aircraft using the airport. . Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
