Sugar was once king in Hilo. Now, the town is known for its bay, shops, and farmers market that teems with exotic fruit. Swaying hips abound at Hilo’s Merrie Monarch Festival, a week-long hula contest held after Easter. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is nearby. There, Kilauea is the hottest attraction as one of the world’s most active volcanoes. At its helm is Pele, the Hawaiian volcano goddess.

Close to many things on Wikiki. The beach, restaurants and lots of stores are within close range. The parking was terrible. We weren't the only ones struggling to fit a mini van into a smart-car-sized parking space! The Parking was difficult to find in the first place, located under the hotel. "For Hilo, it's ok."
The hotel is definately dated, time seems to have stopped right around the late 70s as far as furnishings and decor are concerned. But, the beds were comfortable, the shower adequate, the food o.k. Location-wise it's pretty good, the "seaside" is across the street, surrounded by a sidewalk. A decent park is kiddie-corner with a botanical garden. The […] airport is just a few minutes away - with the helicopter flights being much cheaper thatn the Kona side. For what you get, the price seems steep, but choices are few. "Hilo Seaside"
The Hotel was built in the 1950s and is fairly well maintained. The adjoining restaurant was the only real downside. The food was good... the service in the morning was terrible with the exception of one server... Ask for Starr if you want fast friendly service.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Avoid Hukilau Wing"
I have stayed at the Seaside several times and found it to be clean and friendly, if modest in appearance. Last week I was placed in the Hukilau wing (at the far back of the property) for the first time. Although I needed wireless internet in my room to complete a business project, reception was so bad that I was unable to connect. Also, the back windows […] of my room were mere feet away from a large metal Quonset hut that served as the church next door. They were holding a very loud, amplified service with preaching and music that lasted until 9:30 pm. I was forced to bring my PC and papers down to the lobby (although it wasn't much quieter there) and use the free wireless internet to finish my work. All was quiet when I went back to my room at 10:00. The staff was apologetic about the church, but said there is nothing they can do. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
I prefer a room with a comfortable reading chair for watching TV and reading. Everyone was exceptionally helpful and friendly. Resturant was convient and the food was good. The location was only ok. Car is necessary.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice and convenient but..."
Staff was very nice. Place was clean. Hotel built before modern standards, like doors wide enough to carry a bag through. WIFI was extra. Many steps, all rooms are up or down several steps with no elevator.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Ok for a short budget conscious stay!"
Very basic, decor of rooms is from the 60's, but very clean. Ceiling fan and a window air condition unit, supply comfort but noise as well . The WiFi system is poor. $8.95 per day if you want WiFi in your room, and free service in the lobby, if you are into entering a lengthy code each time you use your wireless. Overall probably ok for one night. […] Would not consider this facility as a vacation getaway. They do have a nice swimming pool which is kept very clean with bright, clear water. "not so good.."
the front desk is much better than the room itself... the room is clean but very simple and quite noisy, bathroom is small. the hotel is near the airport, you know the noises when airplanes are taking off and landing, especially in the nights... our room was very close to a pund, not sure whether it was duck, frog or fish always jumping into the water […] and it woke me up several times. customer service is so so, no Aloha when we were received.. In the evening we called for an extra towel but was told the servers have gone for the day, so my boyfriend needed to dress up again and get it himself, the thing is it was only around 8pm ... little things but not that comfortable... btw, the waffle was burned when I had the breakfast in the restaurant in the hotel The price is competitive, but not a good choice if you are looking for a quiet night Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Not The Greatest"
This is a "50's" styly hotel with no elevator! Rooms were reasonably clean but out dated. Each wing had several floors and lots of stairs to each level. Don't know how they get around accessibility. It was one step up from Uncle Billy's.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"I need to wash my hair!"
It's very old Hawaii style. Nothing fancy at all. The parking is a bit of a problem when you come back at night. I thought the staff was friendly at the front desk. The room was clean although very outdated, such as blue shag carpet. I did however have a few of my essentials stolen when my room was cleaned. One item was an expensive shampoo. I went […] to wash my hair and it was gone. If I could give any advice, especially considering the dire straits of the economy on this island, I would put up your do not disturb sign and catch the maids for clean towels. By the way.....that day I had left her a $5 tip and said, "Have a nice day!" and then could not wash my hair! Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Disappointing"
The worse thing was that I booked a room with one king bed but got a room with 2 double beds. When I brought it up with the front desk, they said that was the only room available and they sold all the rooms with the king beds in them. What is the point of making reservations if they are just going to do whatever they want anyway. Very disappointing […] . Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Very Convenient Location"
The location is very convenient. It is just off the airport, about 10 minute drive from the terminal. About equidistant (10 min. drive) from snorkeling beaches and downtown Hilo. The room was not luxurious, but it was clean and certainly adequate for the price. The room had a window air conditioner, ceiling fan, flat screen TV, and small refrigerator. […] There was WiFi available in the room for extra fee, but free WiFi in the lobby. The bathroom was quite dated and small, but clean and adequate. The staff was very friendly and helpful. "Outdated so don't expect much"
The only reason I would recommend this hotel is that there is a lack of hotels in the Hilo area. I knew not to expect a whole lot but you can tell the hotel has not been updated in decades. The room was clean and nothing seriously stood out as bad aside from being outdated. you know it is a warning when the staff makes it a point to tell you the hotel […] is over 50 years old and the family has chosen to keep the original charm of the hotel. In other words, has not been updated in a long time. It is basically what you would expect from a Motel 6 in Hilo. If you are light sleeper forget about this place as there are no true windows to block sound aside from those old style window panels and with the Coquii frogs it makes for a lot of noises. Also, parking is horrible! First night I got back at 9:30 and was lucky to find a spot on the street. Second night I made it a point to get back by 8 so as to find parking. So if you are driving back from the Volcano late, plan to park elsewhere. Also, stairs only to their second level so bit of a drag with luggage. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Poor for ability to sleep"
Our room was clean, but tiny. We had 2 double beds with three people in the room. They only provided towels for 2. One bed was right beside wthe window, and people were walking by late at night talking in normal voices, making it impossible to sleep. Don't pay the extra $11 for breakfast. It only covers one person, and limits you to three breakfast […] choices, not the entire menu--& that value was $9, so you're actually paying lmore for fewer choices. The breakfast was good though. The hotel was directly beneath the airport landing flight path (low flying planes). Plus the pool closes at 7:00 pm. I'll stay somewhere else next time. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Clean Budget Hotel"
Entirely plain and vanilla, but thoroughly clean. There are window unit ACs, but usually Hilo is so mild, they are rarely needed. Because of the topography of the site, only ONE flight of stairs gets you up to the third floor and there is a separate entrance there at that level for your bags to be hauled. The staff falls all over themselves to help […] you. It ain't the Ritz, but neither is the price. SUPER convenient to the airport. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Seaside Hotel was convenient but not "amazing""
Seaside Hotel was an ok hotel. They were conveniently located near the hotel and was fairly close to a major road. "Okay for the price."
I stayed here because my first choice, the Dolphin Bay, was booked full. The price is okay. The location is not really near anything in walking distance but it is only a few minutes to the center of Hilo by car. The rooms are nice and clean but mine had no working light in the bathroom, a definite problem if you are a guy who shaves in the early morning. […] The TV is not up to date. The staff is very efficient and with that Big Island freindliness. If you use internet in the room, which has a small user fee, be warned the in house network has a block on a lot of sites. The hotel is a good alternative to the overpriced competitors in the immediate area. When I'm on the Big Island I spend most of my time hiking and camping on the volcano and just need a hotel for one or two nights to relax afterwards and before getting on a plane the next day, this is a good option for those purposes. "Hilo on a budget"
Hilo seaside hotel is very run down (earthquake hit it-room is very uneven). The front desk is rude, but the housekeeping is superior: friendly & very hard working. However, the room is nice & basic on a budget! Suggestion: get a rental car to explore and eat at local restaurants. There is a restaurant across the road from the hotel: New Saigon Vietnamese […] Restaurant that is cheap, great food, & friendly husband & wife who run it (compared to the hotel's expensive, unfriendly Coconut Grill). Overall, the hotel is great for a budget and need a place to sleep. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Other than two solid days of rain, thought the motel was pretty good. Nice that the room was well designed to be able to leave it open during the rain. "Not great, but nothing in Hilo seems to be"
My first experience upon checking in was not great. On hotels.com I had requested, and paid more for a "Deluxe Room" which was supposed to include an ocean view and balcony. The first room I got was had a front door which opened to the pool, no windows in the back of the room and certainly no ocean view or balcony. Upon asking about this at the front […] desk, I was told that poolside is one of the "Deluxe rooms". I referred them to the description on hotels.com and they said that their description of a Deluxe room did not include balcony. I then asked if one was available and after that inquired if I had used the previous room and I told them no, they seemed to sigh and reluctantly make the change. The "Deluxe room" was much brighter with a decent view of a coy pond and bay, and much nicer than the first "deluxe room" I'd been given. Other than that the place was ok. There was no elevator to the third floor I was on so lugging a bunch of suitcases could be a pain, and the whole place seemed dated (like everything in Hilo, so I'm not sure it would get much better anyway). In room coffee was terrible, but the coffee, food and service of the attached restaurant was acceptable. I'm not sure there's much better in Hilo, but I would probably roll the dice on someplace else if going back. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"You Get What You Pay For"
We stayed at this hotel for one night, choosing it because of location (nearest available to Volcano park) and price. The hotel is really trying to be a resort - they have taken an old 70's type property and have attempted to convert it to a more modern hotel where the doors are only accessed from indoors. Although the property was clean - they just […] haven't yet gotten away from the old/run-down feel. The only way to change that would be to pump a bunch of money into it and that would certainly raise the prices. My one main concern was their practice of putting a padlock on the back door which leads from the back parking lot to the hotel. The hotel is an absolute maze of rooms (my husband got lost trying to find the room and we had to go get him). While our "main door" access was the front door to the hotel, I was extremely concerned that if a fire were to break out in one of the side rooms, that people would die because the nearest exit was blocked. While I am absolutely certain this is a security issue - if I were assigned to a room in the middle of the maze -- I simply would have refused to stay their because of the padlocked door -- and although things are relaxed in Hawaii, I can't believe any fire marshall would approve of their setup from an emergency exit perspective. Would I stay again -- tough question. It fit our needs and I could stay there again for possibly one night or two - but ONLY if I were in a room where the main exit door was the front of the hotel. Could I recommend the hotel -- within parameters yes. It is a a lower level but clean establishment that seems to cater to a younger (20's) crowd. If you are looking for a clean bed and a shower at a decent rate -- this is your place. If you're looking for an actual resort where you will stay a week or two ... in my book, this wouldn't fit that bill. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Hilo Seaside Hotel"
The Hilo Seaside was clean but very, very tired looking. It looked like I had gone back in time. The walls were very thin and there was noise from other rooms as well as loud cars and motorcycles outside. The back parking lot was only accessible by key before 8:00 pm, but the room key hardly ever worked. Basically but there is very little choice in […] hotels if staying in the Hilo area.
