"Disgusting....period."
This is one of the biggest dives I have ever stayed at. To call it run down would not do it any justice. This place is run down and stomped on. Cheaply modelled in about 1972, it appears that the only attempt they've made to upkeep this hotel is painting one half of one side of the place at some point in the past. So... you have a 1/4 painted hotel, […] that is 2/3 abandoned - you can see supplies stocked up in the windows in some rooms from the ocean side - and one of the buildings was completely abandoned with all the windows wide open - portraying a North Korea elegance. I enjoy the history of Naniloa remembering it from its inception to present. It is still the best hotel in Hilo, and affordable. The location is prime, and the view of Hilo Bay with Moku Ola dancing in the water makes for a pleasant stay. The rooms were cleaned daily and in a timely fashion. "A place NOT to stay"
I stayed at the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort in 1997 and it was one of the most wonderful places at a great rate. It had a restaurant, shops, and many guests. Now fast forward to 2012 and I just about had a heart attack when we arrived.The restaurant is gone as are ALL the shops that were located in the lobby area. This hotel says it has a kitchenette, […] which it did 15 years ago - now the "kitchenette" includes a small fridge and a 4 cup coffee maker. the only furniture to sit on in the room is the bed and a small desk chair with wheels. NOTHING else... I called the front desk to ask for a chair because I am disabled and sitting on/in bed is awful difficult and a desk chair (no padding) is NOT comfortable... I was told they COULD NOT get a chair for the room. In order to warm up food in your room, you couldn't do that either. The microwave that is NORMALLY included in a kitchenette is located behind the front desk and only operated by the desk clerk not the customers. The "curtains" in the room are no longer cloth - 3 wooden panels that slide into place. It also had 2 swimming pools and an outdoor bar by the one, now the area with the bar and second pool is closed off and the water in the pool is all black and nasty - smelly...... checked out of the Naniloa and will NEVER go back without looking at the hotel and room first. We family and I got the garden view which means no balcony only the window can open. And the downfall was the AC wasn't working too well and the shower head wouldn't stay up.. They did renovation but still had to do some fixing. So If you want a balcony, ocean view only gets a balcony, which kinda was lame. "Unhappy In Hilo."
The staff was polite and curteous enough but the hotel was dreadfully understaffed. The security staff was inept and incompetent. After it was determined that a fire alarm at the hotel was false they were unable to promptly turn oif thye alarm system which kept blaring. I wouls also like to know why thae fire deparetment was not on the scene and why […] the party on the ground floor continued during the alarm. Why were they not evacuated? The area around the pool was never cleaned during my eight day stay and there was a chair in it for two days. The elevators are a filthy disgrace, I will never ever recommend to anyone that I know that they sould visit your facility.The cold breakfast that was served terrible but I only ate it once. I later went to IHOP or Ken's. I was veru disappointed that you couldn' get a beer or sandwich in the hotel. I spoke with a number of Federal Park employees who also stayed at the hotel and they requested tah I convey their unhappiness wity mine for the same reasons. Hotel was run-down. Do not be deceived by Internet photos. Room looks nice and clean but beds sagged in middle and the bathtub was not clean. Hair and sand was all over the tub. "Never Again"
I was shocked at how aweful this place looked. Gross would be my word for it. If we hadn't already paid for our three night, I would have gone somewhere else. Pools are in ruins. Place looked like a bomb went off. I was scared to be there. Do not go to this place. Run don't walk away. Only thing was the view. Our room had been remodeled but so weird. "In the Post-Apocalyptic Style."
By now I have stayed at the Naniloa about 5 times for an aggregate total of around 8 weeks, but this last will be the last. The staff was very nice, as always. But the place itself has continued to fall into even further disrepair despite the "remodeling", which has been ongoing for at least 4 years that I know of . The ancient and beautiful banyan […] tree in the entrance courtyard has been cut down "at the owner's request" to "accommodate tour buses". There's acres of parking a few feet away, so I somehow question this excuse. The swimming pool and other outside guest areas (this is Hawai'i, you know, and people come there to go outside!) are beyond embarrassing. "Post-apocalyptic" might be a better term. In my opinion, the owner seems intent upon simply working this property into the ground. And that's too bad, because it is easy to see what a wonderful place this once was, and could be again. Im not a princess, i do appreciate spending my hard earned money at a nice place. This hotel was run down, moldy, ghost town appeal. No furniture beside the pool to lay on i had to lay on the chiped pain around the pool. The lot beside this hotel, which was my view by the way, looked like an alley you'd find a dead body at! There is no pub (even though […] i don't drink) , there is no restaurant! Not even next door or next door to that. Once we had checked into our room we quickly realized after calling the front desk, that the reason we could hear the room 6 doors down flush the toilet and having a shower was due to the tile in the hallways and no insulation anymore because of the "RENO"S" I would never ever ever stay at this hotel ever again. Did I mention the small ants and bugs??? I was so disappointed i literally cryed every evening. Har vært på omvisning på Alcatraz og hotellet ga meg samme følelse som de kalde gangene der. Dette er definitivt et "keep-out of" hotell.
