Sugar was once king in Hilo. Now, the town is known for its bay, shops, and farmers market that teems with exotic fruit. Swaying hips abound at Hilo’s Merrie Monarch Festival, a week-long hula contest held after Easter. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is nearby. There, Kilauea is the hottest attraction as one of the world’s most active volcanoes. At its helm is Pele, the Hawaiian volcano goddess.

"good deal and very cordial staff"
I was pleased with Uncle Billy"s. It was reasonably priced, with very pleasant hotel staff, and set in a lovely area a short walk from a gorgeous park. Yes, the hotel could use some renovation in places, but again, for the price and locale, it was perfectly adequate. The front desk lady reccomended a nearby Thai restaurant that was superb!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"away from the busy traffic, but close to downtown"
After we switched rooms from the mynah birds inside court to the outside we were much happier. The personnel at the desk and all around was very friendly and helpful. The rates are good. We are from Waikiki and a hotel similar to yours is the Royal Grove, owned by the Fong family. It is cozy and comfortable.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Peaceful oceanside"

"Definately recommend if you're on a budget"
This is one of the oldest hotels in Hilo, HI. Some places it shows. The bed hurt my husband's back (not mine). It was easy to find, easy to get access to other sites in the area, the staff was always looking for ways to help. We got it as part of a package. No shower chair in the handicap bathroom, but we just used the plastic chair from the balcony […] (overlooking the ocean). They should mention the balcony in their advertisement. "Uncle Billy's"
The restaurant- which is supposed to have very good food- was closed for renovation! New owners. So, hard to evaluate- it was recommended to me because of the food! The surroundings were beautiful and right on the beach! Lovely & I'd go again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Checked Out Early"
I had bugs in my room, rust/mildew in the shower/bathroom, and, one day when I came back from a day out, the balcony door had been left open. Despite the sketchy condition, the staff was friendly and helpful.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"A little disorganized"
Overall for the price I like this hotel and will use it again. My only complaints are minor ones. Their system is slow - real metal keys rather than card locks, everything was paper based, and everything just seemed slow and behind the times. The hotel is older and so is any renovation it may have underwent. This is not the Ritz, but it is not priced […] as such either. The location is good and most of the staff I encountered were pleasant. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Back to the 70's"
Nice clean hotel just older gives you a 70's feel but all the hotels in the area seem to be about the same.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Uncle Billy's Nightmare on Banyan Drive."
This property is the most run down dump I have ever seen. The roaches would not want even to stay here. Not to mention they said they have wi-fi but they do not.Genuine Expedia guest review
