"away from the busy traffic, but close to downtown"
After we switched rooms from the mynah birds inside court to the outside we were much happier. The personnel at the desk and all around was very friendly and helpful. The rates are good. We had a 'superior' room looking into the central garden area with partial ocean view ....it was really beautiful. At night u can hear bird calls from the trees in the garden. "Good hotel for the price!"
So this hotel is kinda run down and all but for the price what do u want? Its right in front of the bay so u can walk to the water, the rooms are big with 2 beds and a pull out couch, good bathrooms and everything else is straight. I chose this hotel mainly by price, but was pleasantly surprised by how charming it is. Looking out over Hilo Bay and right next door to beautiful Queen Liliuokalani Gardens, it would be hard to find a hotel with a nicer location. The hotel itself is older, and it looks it--it's not perfectly new. On the other hand, it has an older charm that is completely […] lacking at any newer or chain hotel. The hotel has beautiful landscaping all its own that has obviously had time to mature over the years. The hotel uses actual metal keys instead of key cards (for which we, understandably, had to leave a key deposit) and has a morning Continental breakfast, including quantities of fresh papaya. The pool is nice, and if you walk down to to Hilo Bay from the hotel's central courtyard, you walk out onto tidal pool rocks. We will most definitely be staying at Uncle Billy's again. My husband, son and I enjoyed our stay at Uncle Billy's Hilo Bay Hotel, because it was very comfortable. We liked the atmosphere and the beautiful scenery surrounding the hotel. In value for money terms, this hotel is great but don't expect a 5 star experience. It has a laid back, island feel to it but is very clean and neat.
