Sugar was once king in Hilo. Now, the town is known for its bay, shops, and farmers market that teems with exotic fruit. Swaying hips abound at Hilo’s Merrie Monarch Festival, a week-long hula contest held after Easter. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is nearby. There, Kilauea is the hottest attraction as one of the world’s most active volcanoes. At its helm is Pele, the Hawaiian volcano goddess.

I was pleased with Uncle Billy"s. It was reasonably priced, with very pleasant hotel staff, and set in a lovely area a short walk from a gorgeous park. Yes, the hotel could use some renovation in places, but again, for the price and locale, it was perfectly adequate. The front desk lady reccomended a nearby Thai restaurant that was superb!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"comfortable cheap reasonable stay"
The hotel we stay was pleasant the room service was great, and what I really like about it was the garden area. They also had complimery breakfast of papaya ,muffins, English muffins, wheat bread. and drinks for the morning. The stay along with the birds chipping at 5 p.m after that the koki frog making the noise.. But you get use to it. uGenuine Expedia guest review

Great location, great service. The hotel is very close to downtown and right off the shore. Besides the fact that the hotel is a little old, everything else was great.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Still love it, decades later"
Uncle Billy's is not a luxury hotel (nor do they claim to be), but it is friendly, open, affordable and laid back, and the all you can eat papaya at breakfast is just the crowning touch. My husband and I stayed at the Kona-side Uncle Billy's when we first started dating, nearly 20 years ago, and had the fondest of memories. This August (2012) we went […] back, now to the Hilo side (with some apprehension given some of the negative reviews I read) and loved it all over again! It's family-style, and that is what makes the Big Island so special. Oh, and Andy Bumatai was playing when we were there -- wow!! :) Thanks for the memories, Uncle Billy & co.!! "Good room for a fair price"
Unlike what I had heard online, this hotel is not that bad. Infact, I really enjoyed my stay here. The room I got was nice and quite spacious, as compared to the other hotels on other islands, for the same rate. The hotel is situated right in front of the backwaters and not too fr from the Hilo airport. The only thing some might find annoying is the […] sound of the crickets all night. Nonetheless, I would recommend this place to anyone who is planning to stay in Hilo. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Quaint Hotel"
Older hotel in need of a little upgrading (bathroom mirror fell off the wall but didn't break...thankfully). Hotel staff were pleasant and helpful. Parking was limited especially with the county working on tree trimming project thus limiting parking on the street. This place is not for everyone, as it is an old hotel, but I loved it. Our check in clerk was very friendly and made us feel comfortable from the get go. Kudos to her. Unfortunately, I cannot remember her name, but she was the Tues. night gal. She upgraded us to an ocean front room which was fantastic. Sliding doors on both sides provided amazing breezes. […] Coqui frogs are abundant and loud, if you are not used to loud....this may be taxing. For me....it was heaven. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"We Like It"
Love the hotel. We booked a double bedroom and there are actually two double beds and one single bed. Good for us. The kids had their own bed instead of sharing. The shop are excellent. We love the ice cream there. Free breakfast. The only issue if we have to say is there are lot of birds and they love to sing/talk.Genuine Expedia guest review

Very helpful staff and I will stay here again. If you are an adventurist, as we are, it's not that bad of a walk to the airport 1 mile.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Carry on Uncle Billy, you have done us proud."
Nice ambiance, gives the feel of old Hawaii,in a nice comfortable way. Hotel shows her age,but she earns her respect from it. Feels like you stepped into a sixties movie, like you might bump into Elvis, or Annette Funicello,in the lobby. Being right on Hlio Bay gives Uncle Billy's a great Atmosphere. I will do it again! "Good Deal"
Yes, Uncle Billy's is an aging building but there is a certain local character and charm to it. The staff was friendly and helpful. The room had all the basics that we needed and was clean. Considering the very reasonable rates the free parking, wi-fi and basic continental breakfast is a great deal! "Uncle Billy's hotel in Hilo -- basic comfort"
Uncle Billy's is fairly classic -- simple, Hawaiian style from several decades ago. Small garden but with water and red-painted fences, our breakfast had all-you-can-eat papaya. The room was spacious and comfortable, but the plumbing looked old. Location is good (where lots of other hotels are too), basically if you have a car. Close to the airport. […] There was no real view from our window, but a comfortable lanai (balcony). Sheets are synthetic rather than cotton. Staff is very friendly. In the morning, in the lobby, they offer a free flower for the ladies -- ours were beautiful red and orange hibiscus. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Great stay at Uncle Billy's Hilo. It is a nice hotel, nice place to see things in Hilo and Volcano. We would stay there again. It is not a resort, or fancy. But, it is comfy and safe.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Great For The Price!"
I can see why some people would give this hotel a bad review but if you are just traveling throughout the hilo side of the island and want to save some money on a place to sleep then this is the right place. It is located in a very nice area just outside of the downtown area of Hilo surrounded by huge banyan trees and parks. I found some great abandoned […] swimming holes just in front of the hotel. Uncle Billy's convenience store in front of the hotel is just that, convenient. It has everything you might need including hot meals like chili rice with portuguese sausage for lunch and sausage and egg croissants for breakfast. The room can be very noisy if you get a bad neighbor. My room had an adjoining door to the next room and the guy had his TV on full blast for what seemed like three days straight. If they have a room without adjoining doors I would request it next time. Free Wifi in the room. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Relax! Hang Loose."
Don't listen to the haters. Look at the price and remind yourself, it's not the Hilton. This is a perfectly adequate little motel. Yes, it's old, but Everything in Hilo is old! It is very clean, no bugs, no mildewy ceiling tiles. In fact, the room was huuuge! And remodeled! I will say, make sure you get the "superior" room type, that equates to a normal […] tourist quality room. The "standard" room, not so much. Other than that, the grounds are beatiful, the pool is small but clean, and situated RIGHT at the waterfront. Staff is super friendly and helpful. But oh yeah, parking does get TIGHT late at night, you may have to park on the street if you get in late. Breakfast is only from 6:30 to 8:30, but it's for ALL guests and room types, even if it says not online. Think Hawaiian motel 6, and book it! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Hilo Bay hotel"
Nice, clean, spacious, comfortable room in a good location. You can easily wlk to the park down the street for a morning stroll. They did have a complimentary breakfast, which is a good value for the room price we paid. The hotel looks tired, but the room was actually pretty good inside. The elevator was a little smelly - so we took the steps when we […] didnt have luggage to carry. My only major complain was the parking situation. The hotel has a parking lot in front of the entry way - which is not only small but also has resevred/restricted spots that CANNOT be used by hotel guests. We came in around 9 pm one night only to find the parking full. The front desk was apathetic and jst asked us to find street parking - which was also rather full. We spent about 20 minutes finding a parking and then walking all the way to the hotel:( I still give HBH a 4/5 for the location, cleanliness, amenities & comfort of theroom. "Definately recommend if you're on a budget"
This is one of the oldest hotels in Hilo, HI. Some places it shows. The bed hurt my husband's back (not mine). It was easy to find, easy to get access to other sites in the area, the staff was always looking for ways to help. We got it as part of a package. No shower chair in the handicap bathroom, but we just used the plastic chair from the balcony […] (overlooking the ocean). They should mention the balcony in their advertisement. Have traveled to Hilo on 2-3 day Business trips dozens of times. Hilo does not offer much for a tourist as far as Hotels go. They are all together in the same location. […] I have stayed in all the hotels in Hilo and all the beds are the same softness. As far as quiet, the Coqui frogs see to it that night is a challenge no matter where you stay. We spent four nights there and we were really satisfied, of course it is not a five star hotel but it's totally fine to spend a few nights there!!! the service is awesome, they even organised a private tour with an hawaiian family for us! "Uncle Billy's Hilo Bay Hotel"
This is a comfortable hotel for a reasonable price. The staff are friendly and helpful. The hotel is older and a bit outdated but it has a certain charm and has been kept up and is still in good repair. It is simple but quite pleasant. The continental breakfast is simple, like most, it has breads, muffins, fresh fruit, juice, and coffee. The location […] of the hotel is in a neat part of town and is only a few minutes away from the airport and the Hilo downtown area. It doesn't have a beach to lay around on but it has a nice, yet smaller, pool to swim in. I read all 40 some comments before arriving at Uncle Billy's. The service is actually excellent. The hotel is very old, since 1962 . . . so people should stop moaning about its age and understand the situation. Some spoiled and lazy people think they should pay the lowest price for a Big Island hotel, but want a new hotel situation. The rooms are very, […] very clean and the service is excellent. A great bargain. The Aloha spirit is there and the people who work there are wonderfully kind and very supportive. It is ideally located to everything. I am amazed at some of the previously harsh and, sometimes, unfair criticism of this nice hotel. I enjoyed my stay and the nice people who were wise enough to register there. Yes, it is an older place, but quaint and enjoyable for people who value a real Aloha spirit. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"A little disorganized"
Overall for the price I like this hotel and will use it again. My only complaints are minor ones. Their system is slow - real metal keys rather than card locks, everything was paper based, and everything just seemed slow and behind the times. The hotel is older and so is any renovation it may have underwent. This is not the Ritz, but it is not priced […] as such either. Picture 70's style lua, and that sums up the decor of the hotel. It's an old hotel if you are looking for fancy luxury this isn't your style. But for family […] travlers with young kids it was a fun cool hotel.
