Terrific location. Rooms larger than average for NYC. As a native NYer, I'm pretty picky & stay at this chain (plus their 34th St. location) often. "Convenient, best one bedroom suites and lounge"
We always enjoy staying at Affinia Hotels, particularly this property as it is convenient for us, has large suites and a large comfortable nicely decorated second floor lounge. They are very nice and helpful. My gripes this visit were primarily that the sofa bed was miserable, the toilet seat was broken (they did replace it within an hour of our complaint) […] and there is no food served in the lounge for breakfast, but they make good coffee. Most similar properties in the area provide basic continental breakfast included in the rate. Frankly, this time around we got a very good price for the room, maybe 60% of what we usually pay. "Room temperatures made sleep almost impossible...."
I was very, very disappointed by the hotel - especially since other reviews were positive and I selected it based on that. The room was much smaller than advertised and the condition of everything was poor - it is just not a well cared for hotel. "Hating glass-covered writing desks but nice hotel!"
The location is great, very close to subway station. Uniformed bell-staff were helpful. The lobby area is on the second floor and they serve free wine in the evening. Breakfast and internet access are extra and quite expensive. The room was very large for a New York hotel. The street facing the hotel is not super busy but there is some noise. The bathtub […] was very large and pristine clean. The bed was too soft and not really comfortable but this is sometimes a personal taste. There is no coffee-maker in the room, there may be coffee in the second floor lobby area but I have not checked. The writing table is covered with glass and has reading lights pointing downwards, which causes lots of glare. Also, obviously you cannot use your mouse on a glass surface so good luck if you didn't take your mouse pad with you. The room has a safe.I had a rather late flight out, I didn't bother to put the "do not disturb" sign and I woke up to housecleaning knocking on the door at 9 am. "Just fine- but watch out for construction!"
This is hotel is perfectly fine. Room is nice and clean, staff seems friendly. A little on the run-down side, but it's not a problem really. My only complaint for the hotel at the moment is the massive construction going on. My husband and I were hoping to sleep in, but there was massive construction apparently going on right above us. "One small flaw"
The only thing I would change about the hotel is the ironing boards. A full-size ironing board, as opposed to the small one provided in the rooms, would make me much more likely to return. "Smelly room"
I booked 4 rooms for myself and my staff. The room size was good. The bathroom however is very small. My biggest problem with the hotel is the smell of cigarettes. I checked in at 3:30 pm. They had 2 rooms but I was told they are not ready. An hour an a half later, I finally got my room. When I got into my room, the first thing I noticed was the smell […] of cigarettes plus an overdose of air freshener, used to cover the smell of cigarettes. I am sure the reason the reception delayed getting me my room was to try to let the room air out. Eventually after a day or so, the room smell cleared up. We really like the size of the rooms, but the the furniture is worn. It's really time for new furniture and carpeting. The heat was turned off in the hotel so our bedroom was cold. The bathroom needs more amenities. The towels did not smell fresh. The elevators run very slowly and people wait a long while. The phone cord was plugged into the wrong socket […] and didn't work. Great location for catching metro trains uptown to museums, downtown to theater and eastbound to airports. Staff is friendly and efficient. The Affinia 50 hotel is in a great location, within walking distance of Rockefeller Center, Central Park and Times Square. The staff made us feel at home and were so friendly and helpful. We received great suggestions for meals, tours and things to do. There was some facade maintenance happening while we were there and some fumes creeped into our room. […] The front desk reacted promptly, moving us to another room (even an upgrade). We booked a junior suite and it was a really nice size, especially for the price. "A Hidden Gem in Midtown"
What a great hotel in a super location. This is my new hotel of choice for NYC. The room was very large by NY standards and very comfortable. The only negative was we were on the third floor facing 3rd ave so traffic noise was a bit much but not unbearable. Wifi is about $15 per day but it is free in the lounge. I have stayed in probably 15 hotels in New York City from very high end to average. I have stayed at the Affinia50 before and will do so again. It offers great value for a NYC hotel. Its in a terrific location: close to subways, mid-town shopping and restaurants. Staff were all amazingly friendly and helpful. Room was very large by New York standards. […] The hotel lounge on the 2nd floor offers some nice amenities and is well-appointed. The rooms were a little old and outdated though, but again not too bad for NYC where old rooms are common. The bed mattress was ok, not great. They do offer a selection of 5-6 pillows to choose from which makes it more comfortable. "A Little Gem in the Heart of Manhattan"
The Affinia 50 is a little gem of a hotel. The room was fantastic (2 bed suite that included a full kitchen). The bed is the most comfortable I have ever slept in (I was told that the mattresses are made expressly for the hotel). The entire staff was so friendly and welcoming. Every night after we came back from a full day of sightseeing, the doorman […] would greet us with, "Welcome home." It's a small courtesy which made a big impression on 2 exhausted tourists. The location couldn't be better - within walking distance of all the major points of interest. And for those places beyond walking distance, the #6 Train is a block away. "Over rated"
I paid more for this hotel because of it's high rating on Expedia, but was somewhat disappointed. I guess because I had a discounted rate, I was limited to the bottom 5 floors. I have two tests to determine acceptability; the smell test and the noise test. It passed the smell test, no hint of smoking. But the first room I had was at the back (away from […] the street). The problem was that it was right above a large fan which was extremely noisy. The staff was curtious and moved me to another room facing the front. The double paned windows completely blocked the street noise. However, the walls are not sound proofed and I could virtually hear everything the neighbors said. I also got to hear the cartoons their child watched on TV. Mind you they were not particularly loud. The other issue was that the rooms desparately need an upgrade. In both rooms the wall paper was peeling from the wall. The good points are that the hotel is centrally located on the East Side and the staff was curtious and responsive.
