Room was exceptionally large for NYC. Updating of hotel could be better but room was clean, Would stay again especially when going for Broadway theaterGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Great location to broadway theaters and Times Square. The room was large enough for 4 of us with plenty of hot water!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"A so so Hotel near Broadway NYC"
The hotel is very well located near Broadway and next to 45th and 6th Avenue which was great. The state of cleanliness is very nice. The price compared to other places was very affordable the room not so big not so small adequate for 2 adults. Brand New LCD's that worked flawlessly, cable channels with a good selection of varied channels. These were […] the good! The bad only one chair, ironing table that was super small, no clock radio, no way to control climate, but at night it was cold enough and during the day a bit hot, you opened the window to regulate. The windows need more sound proofing because you could hear a bunch of noise from the steam system at 2 am, they said that is what it was.The window's security mechanism did not work making the window able to be opened at any time from the outside by any intruder. It is quite ok if you are on a budget and want to save some money otherwise there are better choices! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
My overall stay was ok. As far as the rooms, its like many say 'you get what you pay for.' The staff was very friendly. Honestly it was well worth it for the price, the location is basically one block from Times Square and is surrounded by plenty of places to eat and drink. Would definitely suggest to people who are looking for convenience and aren't […] looking for 5 star luxury Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"A great value"
For the price, this is a great value in NYC. It's close to Times Square and the Subway. A couple of nice Deli's and Irish Bars near by. It's a bit noisy, but this is NYC. Bathroom was small.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"You are in Times Square"
Location Location Location. Nothing outstanding about the room itself (it was clean and comfortable) but you are a block from Times Square and just a few blocks away from the metro.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great Location and Affordable"
Loved the 1 block walk to Times Square/Theatre district. Great inexpensive breakfasts next door. Helpful staff. Large clean room with 2 comfortable double beds. No clock. Night table lamp could not be plugged in since window A/C unit was plugged into the outlet. My room was on the street and a bit noisy in the morning but it didn't bother me. We booked a nice 2-double room on the 9th floor. Positives: BIG for a NYC room. Clean! Good water pressure, plenty of hot water. Extra pillows/blankets in closet. Negatives: Few electrical outlets (old building), dirty windows, bathroom door wouldn't quite close all the way. Elevators small & busy. Found ourselves walking down 9 flights most of the […] time. "Less than helpful staff"
The hotel was very close to Time Square and the room was small but clean. However the staff was less than helpful. Upon check-in the man at the reception desk never looked up to make eye contact or took the time to greet us. He greeting consisted of "What's your name.". The concierge was one of the rudest people I've ever come across. When she finally […] acknowledged I was standing at her desk she was less than helpful. I asked her for directions to where we wanted to go and she claimed to not know what I was talking about and made me feel as if I was putting her out when I expected her to look it up on the computer sitting in front of her. I ended up walking away from her and asking the clerk at the store down the street. Then when we checked out we asked if they would be able to hold our luggage while we went to breakfast and made a few stops and again they were put out. We were told it depended on how many bags and for how long, which was ridiculous when they have lockers that hold many bags and only cost $5 for 24 hours. All the gentleman had to do was direct us to the lockers. Overall, I would not go back do the service alone. The room clean and the price was right but I would have paid more to stay somewhere friendlier. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Safe place with a roof over your head"
This hotel was perfect for our needs. A safe, clean place to sleep. It's in a great location. Staff is rather aloof but helpful when asked. Definitely no frills. I would stay again definitely if I were going on another couple night trip to NYC.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
This hotel was in the perfect location. Close to everything. We were able to get a room before check in time. Elevators were very slow and looked unsafe. My kids wouldn't even use them. They took the stairs!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
This is the worst hotel that I have ever stayed in, in NYC. Sometimes the shower had no hot water. There was no shelf in the bathroom to put your stuff. The hotel was old, dirty, and echoed. The free WIFI kept going in and out, so I could not stay connected. I had to ask for extra towels 3 times before they came. They give you a tiny bottle of shampoo […] and 2 tiny bars of soap. The blinds on the windows did not go down all the way. There were no shades. It looks like it has no AC, but it was not hot when I was there, so I do not know. Run away! "Decent but could be better"
We arrived at 11 am on a Saturday and were not expecting to be able to check in but merely leave our bags. We were thrilled when told we could check in right away, so that was a big plus. The lobby was clean, the check in desk was very friendly and the concierge was very helpful as we made our way out to see some sites. When we came back however we […] had great difficulty getting hot water for a shower that afternoon & it was even worse the next morning. I believe the fixtures just aren't maintained properly because once we got hot water it was very hot. That said it took 15-20 before each shower to find the right spot that would deliver the hot water. The other big drawback is the radiator heating system. There is no way to control the heat in the room other than opening the window to let it out. We were on a side of the building with some kind of heating plant below us and that was extremely noisy. Traffic & street noises weren't an issue because we couldn't hear them over the constant running of whatever was below our window. The claim of recently renovated is questionable as the carpets in hallways & rooms are quite dated as well as the above mentioned plumbing fixtures. Not sure I would stay here again or not, but if I did I'd request a room away from the treatment plant & make sure the plumbing worked correctly before unpacking. The rooms are huge however and the beds were quite comfortable. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
Great location and very clean! The rooms were pretty big for a NYC hotel too! The staff was friendly and courteous. The bathroom was very clean, plenty of towels and soap. The bed was kind of hard but over-all we were extremely pleased. The price was right too!!! We will revisit this hotel!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Very close to Times Square and Broadway."
We had a great stay. The staff is friendly if you are. At first I thought the man who checked us in was going to be unpleasant because of his demeanor with the previous guests checking in, but I approached him with a friendly smile and hello and he did the same. The rooms could be updated, but we were never really in our room. The heat works very well. […] So close to everything Times Square and Broadway. Close to subway stations as well. There is no ice machine, but I survived. The rooms did have irons, boards, and blowdryers. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good location...the end."
Everything about the hotel except the location to Times Square was mediocre at best. From the concierge that acted like she was getting us a good deal (and actually ended up making us pay for things we didn't need), to the water that literally took 10 minutes of running to get WARM, not hot. Couldn't complain about the location, a block away from Times […] Square, but noise inside as well as other previously mentioned issues...not recommended for more than one night on a budget. The location was perfect for us (half a block from Times Square) and the size of the room was surprisingly spacious. We visited in January and the room was heated very well, sometimes too well as the radiator wasn't easily adjustable. It was a bit bright and noisy at night but that is just the location of it- it would've helped if the mini blinds had […] some curtains. The facilities were clean, the concierge was extremely helpful and nice, and the hotel itself was fantastic for the price we paid and perfect for our trip. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The location of this hotel cannot be beat! It is less than one block away from Times Square, and within easy walking distance of Empire State building, Bryant Park, Rockefeller Center, Central Park, etc. The only thing is that it is an older hotel. We were kept awake by the banging from the radiator that went on every few hours all night.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Don't Stay Here"
One of my biggest traveling disappointments. If you want to be close to Times Square, which I wouldn't reccomend, this is an excellent location. However, this hotel is in desperate need of help. the front desk staff was very casual to the point of unprofessional; The room itself needed paint, had very worn carpeting, and was not kept clean. Furniture […] throughout, including a wonderful lobby area, was worn, creaky, and needs to be replaced. I have traveled to NYC frequently over 30 years, and I suggest another choice in hotels ... I loved New York City! The room was too small and it was cold. There is a window air conditioner and it let a lot of cold air, The heater was not effecient. The people who worked the desk were very helpful except one guy. When we complained of being cold he told us they didn't turn on the heat until Oct 15th. We got more blankets!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"I'd stay here again"
Our room had steam heat and no way to control the temperature, but thankfully it stayed comfortable - not too hot or too cold. We don't come to NYC to hang out in a room, so I didn't care about the small room or the sad carpet. The place was clean, the bathroom had been redone and the beds were ok. We checked out the last day and got all our stuff in […] one locker - rental same as we'd have to tip a bellman and no waiting. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"older but clean"
It is definately an older hotel BUT they are in the middle of making renovations. In previous reviews there were complaints about having to surrender the room key everytime they left the hotel...we had a newer room with a card that we waived in front of the door and voila, magically it opens. :0) The bathroom was small and a bit ackward and no shelves […] or counters to put our belonging! That would have been a nice feature! The room also had a view of a brick wall but all and all I would stay there again!!!! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Hard to beat the location at this price."
There's nothing fancy about this hotel, but the room was clean, tv worked, it had hot water, you could store your luggage there when you check out, and the location is a half block off Times Square. No ice, but you can buy cold drinks at two next-door shops. We were happy with our tenth floor rooms.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great location, but service lacking"
The location of Hotel St. James was excellent for visiting Times Square and Rockefeller Center... and the rest of Manhattan from there. The room was clean and comfortable, but lacked in services. No ice or coffee / tea in the morning. The friendliness of the staff was almost non-existent. Cafe Cranberry, located just two doors away was a bonus - open […] 24/7 for food and drinks (ranging from sandwiches, salads, hot and cold bar, noodles, pizza). "Great Location, Good Price, Cute Place"
I enjoyed my overnight stay and was able to walk to just about everything on my to do list - broadway, good food & shopping. I honestly liked the ambiance but I'm not a new & shiny kind of girl. Great hotel, if you not scared of a little city noise (which adds to the NY experience) then stay here. Front desk staff are great. This is an older Hotel with great service and you can't beat the location. Rooms are large by NYC standards. Would stay here again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Great hotel. Small and definitely run down but great for its location (literally steps from Times Square). Room was fairly clean, bathroom was very clean. Happy to have a private room and bath with a great location, will definitely return. Only big negative is you have no control over individual room temperature, our room became so hot!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Hotel St. James in NYC"
We enjoyed our stay in the Hotel St. James. We chose a room with two double beds because they tend to be roomier--and our room was indeed spacious by NY standards. Convenient location, nice lobby, friendly desk staff, clean room. Recommended.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"St James - great location, just fair on the inside"
The hotel reminded me of European hotels in that the lobby wasn't fancy, the hotel is not too visible from the street (not a wide "storefront"), traditional key that you turn in as you leave, tiny elevators, etc. The carpet was torn up on the 6th floor hallway and looked ugly, but the rest of the carpeting was ok. The room we had with 2 double beds […] was quite large though, and the beds were comfortable. The bathroom was small, but with a sink, toilet and shower, you have everything you need. The front desk staff was friendly, and our beds were made each day with clean towels. The greatest thing about the hotel was the location - 1/2 block from times square, which had so much shopping, activity, and was the main stop for Gray line tour bus we used. It was also 1 block from our broadway theater show, and there were some subway stops there too, so the location was very good. Another good point was the free wi-fi. Used my ipod to access e-mail. The lobby also had computers but you have to pay for using them and also for the printer. I was disappointed that they didn't have complementary bag holding for after we checked out, but there were lockers in the lobby area that are fairly large and we paid $5 for up to 24 hours. There is a flat rate of $45 for taxi service from JFK to Midtown Manhattan, though I booked a shuttle service for $20. Took a taxi (metered) from the hotel to Laguardia and it cost $30. Someone wrote that you don't stay in your room much during your stay in NY, which was true for us, so overall it was a good stay in a less expensive hotel than many others.
