"Right in the middle of the action..."
That can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your perspective. The 42nd St entrance dumps hotel guests right in the middle of the very crowded street that is home to many of the Times Square tourist traps, such as Madame Toussaud's, Ripley's Believe It or Not and a couple of movie theatres. The hotel itself is very nice, contemporary and clean. It is a nice hotel in Times Square but don't expect much from the staff. I called several hours before my arrival asking for a high floor and non smoking room. I also asked about a roll away bed stating that if there is a cost, I would bring my own air mattress. I was told that there were notes made and that the roll away would be taken care of. The Hilton on 42nd Street was kind of a shock. The entrance could easily be missed, wedged between an Applebee's and a sporting goods store. It's clean & sleek and leads to very fast & efficient elevators up to the lovely 22nd floor lobby, complete with a grand bar and overlooking the huge gold hand holding up the Mme. Tussaud's sign. The hotel was nice but upon arriving there was tons of construction. The first day we got there all elevators were out so we had to go and come back to check in. This room had a dated and small bathroom - completely different from what was shown on their website. The room itself while spacious by NY standards had NO trashcan so we were just leaving trash in a pile on the floor and they NEVER took the trash! The hallways were dingy and dated also. My experience during my entire stay at the Hilton times Square was absolutely excellent, experiencing the height of professionalism by the staff. Certainly, the hotel was first-rate in every sense, down to the most minimal detail; attractive, functional and comfortable. But as one who has stayed in some very fine hotels around the world, I was impressed […] at how friendly, eager and professional the entire staff was. I recommend this hotel in the strongest terms. I honestly can't think of anything worthy of reasonable criticism regarding my stay. You step out the door, and Times Square is at your feet. In addition, a major subway station, which can connect you to every corner of the Big Apple, is about 40 yards away from the hotel. I initially didn't have a remote control in my room. One call to the desk and it was delivered within minutes. The hotel actually starts on the 21st floor above Madame Tusuads Wax Museum. […] While I thought this might be a pain, the elevator to the lobby was super fast. If you are put off by the mob scene on 42 street by the hotel entrance, there is a quieter entrance on 41st. If you are a subway traveler, then the accessibility can't be beat. This is a half block from 2 different stations connecting to 9 different lines. Also a block from Port Authority Bus station and one quick subway stop from Penn Station. The breakfast buffet was great, but pricey if not included with your rate.
