"Broadway on a Budget"
School age son and I stayed 1 night to go see Mary Poppins. We could walk to theatre. Simple, no thrills, safe, and blocks awat from Time Square. You do get what you pay for but if your goal is a NYC room and not a 5 star getaway this is it! There are couple of full bathrooms on each hallway. "Double Bed Room is Very Small"
The price is attractive and the location is great for access to the theaters but a double bed room is like staying in a dorm room. There was just enough room to get around the bed. The bed is very firm making it uncomfortable to sleep on your side. I put the comforter under the sheet as a mattress pad. I recommend you request an inside room because […] the street is noisy all night. The downside to the inside room we transferred to is that at 8 am the construction crew started work. Also on the inside room we stayed in, the TV is mounted past the foot of the bed parallel to the length of the bed making it impossible to watch TV while in bed. "American Inn - safe from the storm"
We arrived in Manhattan in the wee hours of the morning thanks to a blizzard. We couldn't get a cab from Penn Station because the streets weren't yet plowed. It was a relief to realize that we could walk to the hotel - and even more of a relief to find that even though it was after midnight, people were out shoveling the sidewalks all along our route. […] A pleasant desk clerk quickly processed us in. The facility was exactly as expected. The room was just large enough for two people and we had to keep most of our things in our suitcases because there wasn't a chest of drawers. However, the room was clean and freshly painted. There were sufficient bathrooms for the number of rooms on our floor (we were next to one and just a few dozen steps from two others.) Best of all, the location was very convenient for sightseeing. Even with two feet of snow on the ground, we easily walked to Times Square, Macys/Herald Square, and Grand Central Terminal. There was access to several subway lines within a few blocks of the hotel. Staying in New York isn't cheap, so you pay big money for not much. The hotel is in need of a make over, especially the bathrooms. Our room was small and noisy (you could hear the street traffic through ear plugs and the tv). For some reason, you must still be able to smoke within the building, as many times we would come back from our day out and […] there would be either someone standing at the window puffing away or the smell of smoke.
