We went to NYC with a couple friends for the long weekend. The hotel was great for our purposes. good location, good price for midtown, nice staff, but... admittedly we were low maintenance travellers. the room was tiny and so was the bathroom. the tv didnt work, but we wouldnt have used it but for one night for a few minutes before we went to sleep. It was such a non-issue that we didnt even complain to the staff about it. we walked to a show, ran through central park in the morning, and were generally pretty close to all the restaurants we wanted to hit. also, the hotel is very close to 5th ave if you are looking to shop. if you are planning on spending a lot of time in your room, this might not be the hotel for you. Overview

At The New Yorker Hotel, guests are just a few minutes from classic Manhattan attractions. Stepping out of this Midtown hotel, guests find themselves facing Madison Square Garden and Penn Station, both across the street. They can shop the sales at Macy’s giant flagship store, just 1 block east. Stop for a juicy burger or a fresh salad in the Cellar at Macy's. Then top their day with a visit to the Empire State Building, 1 block past Macy's. The Javits Convention Center is half a mile in the other direction. If guests are heading farther afield, they can catch the subway: The 34th Street/Penn Station stop is just outside the hotel’s entrance. The concierge desk, connected to the lobby, can provide guidance through the Big Apple's worth of tours, show tickets, and restaurant reservations.

Opened in 1930 and renovated in 2007, the hotel itself is a New York classic. The big, bustling lobby retains original Art Deco fixtures like huge chandeliers and a coffered ceiling. Just off the lobby, guests can take a trip back in time to the retro-style Tick Tock Diner, open around the clock. Or try the signature Skyscraper Burger or a sizzling steak at the hotel's Cooper’s Tavern. Guests will also appreciate the onsite fitness facility and complimentary wireless Internet access.

Joe DiMaggio, Muhammad Ali, and Jennifer Hudson are among the famous guests who have slept at The New Yorker Hotel. Guests may settle into their room, well-located on the 18th floor or above, and watch their favorite HBO show on the flat-panel HDTV. They can doze off in the comfort of 300-thread-count linens and even opt for a room with a view of Midtown, or for more space, choose a suite with a sitting area.

A short guide to Midtown West

Some of NYC’s best-known landmarks are north of 14th and south of 59th—or Midtown Manhattan. Its western half is home to Manhattan's largest venues: the Javits Center and Madison Square Garden. In the Garment District, designers try to stay a cut above fashion's latest trends. Nearby, Hell's Kitchen is hot thanks to Restaurant Row. In one block on West 46th, diners can dash from Bangkok to Brazil.

I paid for a room with a queen size bed, it was a double size. in it. Room is the size of a shoe box and the bathroom has no place to put your things in it. The hotel is very old and the price was way too much. How could they rate this hotel a 4 star???? If you want to stay near the theater district and Macy's the location if fine.

We had a great stay at the hotel. It was comfortable. The room was a suite with 2 bathrooms and with 3 women it was great. We had a balconey and loved looking down the street. Very close to everything. The hotel staff was fine. Being a previous New Yorker it was exactly what I expected.

Stayed at the New Yorker Hotel Dec 12-15. First room given was horrible! No room to walk around. My poor 73 year old mother was falling over everything. The closet was so absurd. You could not fit any clothing in it. We asked for another room, and were told none was available. During the night someone was smoking in another room. The smoke was everywhere. […] The front desk said they knew who it was, but did nothing about it. They agreed to move us to another room. The next day they were doing jackhammering on the side of the building they had put us in. This was from 9 a.m. Until 5 p.m. Needless to say we will not be staying in the New Yorker again. Read more

The room was tiny but I wasn't there to spend all day and night in my room. I love old hotels, especially those with art deco fixtures. Some in the hotel are original and some are updated in the same style, which is super neat. The bed was comfy. And you can't beat the proximity to sights and train/ subway stations.

I chose the hotel for trip to the US Open because of its good ratings and proximity to Penn Station. I was not disappointed. The hotel is a very old building, but well maintained and very stylish. But you can't change the overall architecture of an old building so the rooms are quite small so it would be uncomfortable for a long stay. It's a block from […] Penn Station and right around the corner from where the Bolt Bus dropped us off. Read more

Though a super touristy location, the new yorker is central to everything. The rooms though classic NYC small, were well appointed and clean. Wolf certainly stay again if I needed to be in midtown.

The hotel was nice after the shock of how tiny the rooms are. Housekeeping tends to be stingy. Only left 1 shower cap which I used the 1st day.

The New Yorker was great. We arrived at 12:00, three hours before check-in. We had planned to just leave our bags there until later but the dest clerk found a room ready for us. When she saw that there were four of us, she upgraded us to a larger room...Huge room on the 33rd floor overlooking the Empire State Building and Madison Square Garden. I later […] requested a cot for my son and they sent one right up, at no charge. The Tick Tock Diner is attached to the hotel and is open 24 hours. Great for us, returning from the Met! The hotel is a short walk from Times Square as well. Read more

I stayed there one night in March 2012, so I wouldn't have to drive 3 hours home after a late night club show in the City. Passed the place plenty of times over the years, but have never stayed there. The place came recommended to me from a co-worker, so I gave it a shot. As it was the off tourist season, the room was priced cheaper. You won't get these […] rates in the summer or between Thanksgiving and Christmas. We were upgraded to a larger room than expected. Fantastic amenities AND a view of New Jersey LOL (I am from Jersey). Check in was a breeze, for an extra dollar I left one bag and went wandering around the city before my train out that night. The bathroom fixtures are a little dated, but that is to be expected in Manhattan and esecially in an older building. The elevators were quick. As far as location, you can't beat 1 block from the train station at Penn Station and 8 blocks from Times Square, 2 blocks from the Empire State Building, and down the street from Macys if you are going up for the tourist thing. Would highly recommended it and would easily stay there again. Read more

Rather noisy at times; thin walls. But for NYC hotel prices its a pretty good value. Blue line subway station just around the corner. 34th street shopping is also around the corner and its a 10 - 15 minute walk to the theater district. Rooms are small as are 90% of NYC hotel rooms. Room for one person only in the bathroom. Last day there was no hot […] water. Prior days the shower had only hot (nearly scalding) water. Read more

We were impressed by our accommodations at the New Yorker Hotel. The only negative was the general demeanor of the check-in staff - NOT particularly friendly. All others though, were wonderful. The concierge and Cooper's Tavern staff went out of their way to make sure that we had an excellent stay. The rooms, while not large, were clean and well kept. […] Would definitely recommend to our friends. Read more

Did not like the fact that they charge for holding luggage. We had to pay a fee to check them and another fee when we got them back. Room was extremely small. Shower water kept going from hot to cold.

The location was amazing, but even by NYC standards this is no four star hotel. I stayed in a three star hotel for the other two nights of my trip that was palatial in camparison and much cleaner. The location was great, but you shouldn't expect four stars. This is an adequate three star room in a great location.

The woman who checked us in had a lot of difficulty finding our reservation (thank goodness I brought the confirmation). She was a frowner. Great location...right near the train. Loved the attatched restaurant. Dinner was great. Room was clean and bedding was very comfortable. The best part was the attatched 24/7 diner that came in handy after a night at the bars. Will definitely come here again, worth the price.

Great hotel in the middle of midtown. All in all the hotel itself is terrific. My friend and I stayed during a period of two days of heavy rain. Our rain leaked and we had to move to another room. Other than the wait for our room, our stay was above expectations. We did check in early, but at 4:30 we checked in again and only ONE of our 2 rooms were ready but we were going out again in short order so survived fine using the one ready room. After reading the reviews again before leaving home I didn't know just what to expect and was pleasantly […] surprised at the room and the updated decor. Bath wasn't quite as updated, but really had no complaints other than places to put things other than the ledge above the sink but everything was clean, there were plenty of towels and everything worked well. Beds were comfortable but I do hate the comforters as they are too much warmth for me but I am in a minority, I guess. The room was not large, but was fine and we haven't any real complaints there. Location is fantastic and a short one block walk from Penn Station and Macy's and subways were assessable everywhere around. The diner on the premises was convenient and restaurants were within sight. Good stay for our Christmas visit to NYC. Read more
