I have stayed at the Palmer house many times prior and love this old hotel but I had never booked a room through Hotels.com for this hotel. I was unpleasantly surprised to be assigned a crackerbox of a room that smelled of vomit. When I complained I was moved to a bigger, clean-smelling room. I have found this often when booking through hotels.com. […] The hotels must reserve the yuckiest rooms for those of us who get cheaper bookings. Our first stay at your hotel. Good service/courteous. Room was quiet/bed & pillows were clean!! Time didn't allow us to take advantage of all your facilities. One suggestion is that it would have been nice to have a cup of coffee first thing in the morning in the room while we were getting dressed. We would recommend your hotel to our family.

Loved everything about the hotel, our room, and our stay there with one small exception. The bathroom mirror and vanity space was definitely a one person at a time arrangement, which made it harder for us to simultaneously be ready to go anywhere.

My granddaughter and I enjoyed our stay here. The service was excellent, and it is very close to the Art Institute. We took a bus to the Field Museum. The hotel is near some neat restaurants. One of which is the Corner Cafe just out the door and on the corner! More reasonable for breakfast than the hotel and the food was good. I was disappointed about the nickel and dimming. I had to pay a $25 fee to check in early, I had to pay a $10 fee to use the gym. i was hesitant to keep my bags at the bell stand, while i toured the city more, as i suspected it would be another fee. Wanted to find a hotel near the Art Institute and Lake Shore Drive at an affordable rate. Was thrilled to find a great price for a beautiful historic hotel in a great location (about a block and a half from the Art Institute and a simple, quick drive to connect to Lake Shore Drive). Incredible lobby and open spaces. Spacious room with art deco influence. […] Food and drink prices were a little high, but this is a downtown hotel in a large city. Was able to order great Chicago deep dish delivered to the hotel at the recommendation of the very helpful concierge desk. Staff was professional and welcoming - lots of smiles and greetings. Everything about the hotel was beautiful. The location couldn't have been more perfect. The only complaint I have is that something was wrong with our tv and we would have to keep turning it off and then on again. Check n was quick and easy. The newly remodeled lobby stayed true to the hotels history but with modern touches. Our king room was large and comfortable. We would definitely go back.

Hotel was very nice. My only complaint is that I had requested a non-smoking room and that was the only room they had left when I checked in at 5PM. They offered a hospitality room and would put a rollaway bed in it, but I knew my back couldn't take it. I opted to try the room out. We love the Palmer House - have stayed there several times, it's the only place we will stay in Chicago! Rooms are in good condition, plenty of space - we love the 2 double beds with 2 bathroos. Location is perfect - downtown near sights and easy access to all "L" lines.

We were in Chicago for a very brief business meeting. The bed was awesome and the room was spacious, quiet and comfortable. The drinks in the lobby were great but overpriced--the ambience makes up for that. We will be back!

Staff are snobby when they lean you book from Hotels.comParking rate is $42.00 and you cant go in and out. Fast food restaurants close early so you are stuck with the restaurants.

Over all it was fine. there was an issue tring to get the parking ticket validated. We had to return to the hotel a number of time due to the ticket not working at the parking garage.

The Palmer House has become my "place to stay" in Chicago. Located walking distance to attractions and dining. I had car trouble when I arrived and the staff was very helpful regarding towing and helping me get arrangements for tranportation home. Love this place!

I stayed three nights in April at this hotel while attending a convention at another hotel. The room was dated with a few marks on the fading wallpaper, carpet could have been newer, etc. But it was comfortable, clean and what I needed as a solo business traveler. Plenty of hot water and an ironing board and personal safe, and (for a fee) Internet connections. […] Only disappointment was that I asked for a non-smoking room and was given a smoking room - I probably had no guarantee here, and the smoking room in fact did not smell odd, as it turned out. As in all hotels, ask for a room at the end of the hall and away from the elevator foyer as you will get loud-mouth traffic at all hours coming from the elevators past your door. Read more

This is an old gem that's well run. Beautiful lobby, lots if history. Rooms are adequate but lack things travelers come to expect like a way to make coffee and tea in the room or a refrigerator. Also Internet in the room is really expensive: 12.95 a day for only one device.

Hotel and room were excellent - clean and perfect location for getting around. Loved the hotel. However, the room you get through this site is not the "standard king" pictured. I expected more than a 4-foot space around the bed, a simple desk and a hard desk chair. I was there five nights and wanted a nice chair to relax and watch TV (green chair in […] picture was seen in king rooms across the hall from me). Instead, I sat on the bed and watched TV at a 45-degree angle. Site said 180-360 square feet, but you will get the smallest room (they since removed size from their description). I booked 3 months ago, and rate was even lower after I booked, but I still got the small room. This is second time this has happened when booking a hotel with variable size rooms. Apparently they only have an inventory of the smallest rooms when there is a choice. For a few dollars more, I probably would have at least gotten a room with a chair. if going direct. The restaurant was closed for renovations and a few tables were moved into the big hall. We just used the Starbucks downstairs for breakfast. Love this historic hotel. Nice staff. The concierge set up our whole day.

Worth considering if the price is low enough. Not what is used to be, so I understand. Rooms have a strange layout, most are small, with even smaller bathrooms. Despite attempts to update, wallpaper coming off at the seams, several scuffs on the walls and doors, water stains by AC/heat unit....but hey, the lobby is nice.
