Excellent location for our tournament at UC Santa Cruz during the weekend. Close to both the boardwalk, downtown and the university. Room was comfortable and spacious. We were walking distance to Marianne's Ice Cream...WOW!!!

We stay here every time we come to Santa Cruz. The rooms are always clean and they very nice and spacious! Parking is very easy. The breakfast is DELICIOUS! Bacon, eggs, fresh Belgian Waffles! And of course the usual breakfast items; fruit, cereal, yogurt, bagels etc. We take that fact into consideration when choosing a hotel because of the money we […] save by not needing to go out to get a good breakfast. When I booked this hotel, the rating was 4 out of 5 stars...well it's more like a 2 out of 5 stars. Our first room was on the second level and had no air flow from the window as it sat above the mini courtyard for the hot tub (there is NOT a pool here) the noise from the street traffic was terrible. We visited late April, Santa Cruz was cool and breezy...but […] we were in a room having to run an air conditioner because of the noise. I switched our room, which was considerably cooler in general...but there was no screen on the window and the hotel staff was not concerned about replacing it. The windows had absolutely no sound barrier to them. I had to check to see they weren't open. That's how noisy it was with the street traffic.

Our only complaint is the carpet under the air conditioner (between bed and window) was very wet, which also caused an unpleasant odor. The hotel was full so they could not give us another room, their solution was to put towels down. Other than that, the room was very nice. The breakfast was excellent.

The hotel property was clean and well maintained. There was adequate parking (free). There is a terrific Italian restaurant directly across the street. The hotel is walking distance to downtown and to the boardwalk. The wharf is a little farther but not an impossible walk especially if you want to avoid the crazy traffic down there. On the good side, the staff is very friendly and nice. The rooms are large and they have a refrig and microwave. They have a small gym and spa. Overall experience was positive. The gentleman working the front desk was rarely actually at the front desk. You often had to call back to the backroom to get him to come out and assist you. When he did it seemed that you were putting him out. I would recommend to the management to require the front desk staff to stay at the front desk while they are […] on the job to take care of the guests and be available to answer questions. The rooms were in good shape and is worth the reasonable price. Continental breakfast was delicious, waffles, eggs, bacon, cereal, coffee, juice, etc. and the breakfast crew were friendly! The staff were very accommodating and pleasant. We really enjoyed the breakfast and use of the guest computer (much needed since we didn't have ours). It was a working visit for us (househunting) and we needed a comfortable haven to cozy down in. Great deal for the dollar !!!

Our stay here was very satisfying. Then staff was courteous and helpful. Everything was clean, comfortable and worked properly. The breakfast was better than expected (Eggs, bacon, waffles, muffins, bagels, cereal, fruit, juices, coffe, teas, and more). Obviously this is a well run establiishment. We've stayed here before and would stay here again, however this last stay was a nightmare. There was a complaint about smoking in our room, which there wasn't any due to my wife being 7 1/2 months pregnant and I'm in a hotel room duh,well what had happened was I was sitting on my vapor pen unknowingly and it had been going off in my pocket, front desk […] clerk came to inform me of complaints and that I was being charged for the smoking fee, even after I explained. After talking to desk clerk he told me that I was being charged but was still allowed to stay. Well when we got back in at 2:30 am after a concert the security guard informed us that we had to leave. So now not only have I paid in full for a room I can't stay in I'm also getting charged 368 on top of that. I came back in the morning to explain what happened and contest the charge with the manager, who was a great manager, and she totally understood and went to check the room herself, she said that there would be no extra charge for smoking because she could tell we hadn't been smoking and understood about my pen being accidentally turned on. I will definitely return I love the place but just really sucks that we even had to go through all of that and with my wife being pregnant that really added to my irritation level, and I still paid for a room that we didn't get to stay in. Two major snags, no outside window (didn't think to ask) was major for me. Just seeing the outside world and getting that light is a big thing for me. There was also a problem with the TV, and when they had the solution they called the wrong room with it. If I hadn't gone down to the front desk myself to complain yet again, the TV would have been unusable […] all night. One more thing, the heat was very loud when it came on. The hotel was clean and in a good location, but the staff was so disappointing that I will never stay here again. Not sure if it's bad staffing or under staffing, but upon arrival we had to wait almost 15 minutes to check in. Check in is at 3pm and we arrived after 4pm. Lots of people were sitting around waiting for their rooms which were not yet ready. […] Luckily our room was ready to occupy and was mostly clean, but there were a few hairs on the floor behind the bathroom door. We asked for a bottle opener and they explained that they did not because people do not return them. My suggestion is to buy them in bulk, because a Best Western Plus should have such things available to their guests. When we returned to the hotel that night we could not get the electronic key to work at the front door, and had to knock on the door until a unhappy employee let us in barking at us that we should have used another door. Put a sign up if that door should not be used at night! At check out we had to wait another 15 minutes for an employee to finally show up at the front desk. She had an aloof attitude and never apologized for making us wait. There are plenty of places to stay in Santa Cruz and this is not one of them! Read more

Best Western Plus is in a central location for walking to nearby downtown and a longer stroll to the Boardwalk. The hotel is clean with nice furnishings. For the price, a good deal. However, we were in a room on the Ocean St. side which was extremely noisy with outside traffic until 11 PM. Basic hotel, nothing fancy. We had an "inside" room, so it was rather dark (windows faced the interior hallway). Everything was clean; 2 TV's in the room (although a little fuzzy on the cable service). The FREE morning breakfast was pretty good... eggs, waffles, cereal, bagels, etc. Very economical for our family.

Good Location. The entrance is a very strange situation. If you are driving, you enter through the basement, dark, uninviting cement and steel doors to an elevator. After going through that, a nice lobby awaits. Even so, I'd stay there again. No way to park your car at the lobby entrance.
