The location of the hotel and proximity to UT was perfect without being at a closer crowded location. The room was very clean and I love the almost new clean towels. The AC in the room was great for a restful night. While there I took advantage of fitness center. That room could use some improvements. It was dirty and had an odor. I've been working in Austin for quite awhile and this hotel location is wonderful. Although most of the room are old and outdated, they had most basic that you need that some other hotel will charge extra/doesn't have as standard. The hotel was run down and disgusting (i.e. mold in the shower). The neighborhood was less than savory. Perhaps the most disappointing part of the stay was the fact that hotel staff was unwilling to clean the room and avoided doing so for 2 nights even after numerous complaints. While your staff was extremely friendly and accommodating I couldn't check in till after 4 pm and I arrived at 10 am. I was there on business and had to ride around for hours which and prep for my business meeting in a rental car. Also the clientele at the hotel was not appealing. Place is definitely old and you can tell in a lot of little wear and tears in the walls. Was in a non-smoking room, but still could smell traces of smoke. On the up side everything appeared as clean as could be and had no problem with staff.

I needed a hotel last minute for 6 nights. The HJ was inexpensive and easy to book. The website made it seem do-able. Yikes, it is scary. Rooms and hallways had missing carpet, missing room numbers, broken door to the outside that let anyone in off the streets. This hotel - now rebranded as a Howard Johnson - has third-world quality. The hallways smelled of urine, the outside window (first floor, facing a highway!) was cracked as though it had been attacked by a sledgehammer, the safety bolt on the door had been broken off, and there was junk and detritus under the bed that indicated it hadn't been cleaned […] in a very long time. Throughout my five day stay (I would have bolted but was there for SXSW, when every other room in Austin was taken), hair from a previous guest remained on the walls of the shower, indicating that shower cleaning was also not part of the housekeeping responsibilities, in their opinion. When I ran out of towels partway through the stay, they did not replace them and I had to call to request more. I honestly can't recall ever staying at a more decrepit, subpar hotel. Don't bother. While being in an excellent location, this hotel was difficult to find. The Howard Johnson sign was too small to see. The old signs for St. Michel hotel was all that one could see. The desk clerk told me that everyone had trouble finding the place and that while having been purchased by Howard Johnson, it was again for sale. The staff obviously didn't […] care about the place. My room key never worked for more than one night (had to get a replacement each day). The continental breakfast was pathetic. One choice of cereal (the dispenser never worked and so you had to shovel out the contents into your bowl). Not fruit whatsoever. Everything looked seedy and tired. Wallpaper peeling off the walls in the corridors, rear door security lock was broken and the door left open all night. The room itself was neat and clean. A bit worn, but serviceable. While the hotel was in a prime location, I never saw more than a dozen or so guest vehicles in the parking lot. Nobody was ever at the pool. When checking out, they could not print me out a final bill/receipt (the printer didn't work). The desk clerk told me that she word e-mail a copy. She never did. This hotel could be something special, but it would need a lot of work to get there. The only positive thing I can say it that it did not have bugs. Read more
