"Kind of a dive"
All rooms are motel style with an outdoor entrance. Sound has no problem traveling through the walls so you get the pleasure of hearing your neighbor's toilet flushing as well as hearing the neighbors TV. I traveled to Austin twice in Feb. for work and both times stayed at this location. First trip wasn't as bad and maybe it was just the room but it had a very moldy/musty smell and only way I could tolerate it was to run the AC unit which didn't function correctly either. OK although overpriced for sleeping, but use it as a pricey motel by the freeway on a road trip. Advise: if you don't want to spend >200 bucks, get in late, and leave early. I like that this hotel is far enough from the craziness of 6th street and quiet, but close enough to walk to the convention center and all thd fun. The staff was friendly and flexible. Although the hotel was clean and comfortable, I do not think it was worth the rate I paid. Nothing special about it. About 15 minute walk to 6th street where there's lots to do. When I returned my rental car there was a dent in the front where it was obvious the valet bumped into a pipe or pole. "Clean rooms, new furniture, but one big drawback"
Hotel seems old, but pretty well taken care of. The furniture in my room (desk, dresser, bed, tv, and chair) all seemed quite new, although the room itself did not (in particular, the walls and basically everything in the bathroom). I was in the room for 3 nights and everything was great for the first two. However, while getting ready for bed on the […] last night I was extremely surprised to walk into the bathroom and find a cockroach. Although I was grossed out, I decided to stay in the room since it was my last night and I would be checking out as soon as I woke up. After getting rid of the critter, I did call the front desk just to make sure someone was aware. The girl at the desk expressed her apologies and said sometimes the bugs come up out of the bathroom drain. In the morning, I woke up and started getting my things together. As I was walking out of the bathroom I saw another cockroach next to the bed! I took care of the second bug, gathered my things and checked out. Even if I had been scheduled to stay another night, I would still have checked out and found a new hotel. Although I understand that the room itself did not have a cockroach problem, and that they were likely coming up out of the bathroom drain, it is still a bit unsettling to think that you might have to worry about a problem like this. I was at the La Quinta Austin on a 2 night stay for a technical conference at the AT&T center a few blocks away. Location was great, price was reasonable, but the experience was terrible. I was only able to squeeze in 2-3 hours of sleep OVER BOTH NIGHTS because of the very loud and very rude guests that this hotel seems to attract. People were screaming, […] drinking, slamming doors and even playing soccer in the hallway until 4AM!!! I contacted the front desk about the noise, but nothing was done at all to try and control the rowdiness or remedy the situation. Perhaps the police would have been more effective. Was in Austin for a conference and main hotel was fully booked. Chose LaQuinta for price and proximity. Was very happy overall with the hotel. Hotel is right next to the Capital and just a few blocks from all the bars and eateries (close enough to walk but not so close that you hear it/have it on your doorstep). Beds, pillows and bedding were awsome […] for a mid-range hotel. Very nice TV and channel selection too. Staff was friendly and helpful, breakfast was good and served for a long time. Only "needs improvements" were that the carpet could use a good steam cleaning and the shower head was really low (and I'm only 5'5") and the towels were thin and small.
