Was not satisfied with the staff. Inaproprate questions from the staff that took us to the room. The front desk staff was rude especially the young lady that checked us in and out. "Mis-grade hotel that is not clean"
Friendly staff, but do not understand cleanliness or high-end service. Service feels like it belongs in a small-town Holiday Inn. Small room and dark corridors. When I checked-in to my room, there were dried drops all around the toilet. The bed linen had stains and a hair inside the cover near the feet area. Immediately called Housekeeping to clean […] the room while I was there ... They change the linens and pillowcase and then proceed to place the clean pillow on the floor to make the bed. They should have made the bed first and then changed the new pillowcases ... not place these on the floor. So I had them change the pillowcases again. As I was standing there ... obviously the person did not feel there was anything wrong with putting clean face pillow on the floor. That said, they were very apologetic and nice. Also when I checked in around 3 PM, outside the room the small hallway was smelling a bit from the lunch tray left behind. Ate at the restaurant, food is decent and creative for Atlanta. Service was okay. The wine was old ... first glass I ordered had turned to vinegar and was unpalatable. The front desk staff were polite but lacked real customer care. From the customer ratings, I expected better than it was. Decor has not aged well; photos of facilities look better than actual. I was told that coffee would be available in the lobby at 6 a.m.--that's when I needed it, and that was before room service or coffee shop started--but I had to wait 15 minutes for the coffee and then wait for the milk/cream. "Good alternative to the Ritz"
I have stayed at this hotel before and it's usually hands down a five star experience. Overall, I had a great experience staying at the Ellis hotel... some pluses: historical building that has been wonderfully updated with modern interiors and fixtures, it's aross street from subway station (Marta), reasonable rate, helpful staff, super-cool zen-like bathroom (loved it!), super-comfy beds, and most surprising of all... the hotel restaurant, […] called Terrace, had over-the-top amazing food (and I am a very fussy kitty when it comes to food). It's a "farm-to-table" concept, with local, organic, sustainable ingredients. Highly recommend for both lunch and dinner. On the downside, the neighborhood just south of the hotel is sketchy... so stay on the north side of hotel, or jump on the Marta train to head up to Uptown (I went to "Thai on 10th" up there, and it was great too). "Best hotel experience I've had in years."
It has, sadly, become unheard of to provide the level of outstanding and friendly customer service as what I experienced at the Ellis, even from most 4 and 5 star hotels. While this may not be a luxury facility like the Ritz Carlton across the street, I'll match the Ellis staff - from the doorman to the front desk clerks to the bartenders to the housekeeping […] staff to the maintenance folks - up against anyone, anywhere, any time. And do NOT leave without trying the cheeseburger! Bear in mind, this is a completely refurbished hotel in an older building...though you wouldn't know it from the inside decor. That said, I did have a problem with the heat not working in my room the first night; however, the front desk happily moved me to another room in which everything worked perfectly.
