"Great stay / Breakfast at the Palace is a must"
We definitely enjoyed our 2-night stay at the Palace Hotel in August 2014. Congratulations for the buffet breakfast: the pancakes were to die for, and having such good food in the morning in such a fancy looking location (the "Garden") was the best start for our day. Furthermore, the hotel design feels classy and old at the same time, but I appreciated […] staying in a place which looked different from all the modern hotels out there. Our room was big and comfortable, with high ceilings and a lot of natural light. Some of the furniture pieces showed some signs of wear, but it felt understandable to me. The only downturn was the bathroom which was not outstanding for some reason. It just felt somewhat "cheap" compared to the rest of the hotel. Also, drying towels right above the toilets is something I personally find highly unhygienic. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
The lunch that we had in the Pub & Grill was delicious and hearty. The room was spotless and quiet with a fantastically comfortable bed. The only thing that we missed was a coffee/tea pot to make beverages in our room. Room service would have amounted to about $12.00 just to have my morning tea! That's a bit steep for us.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Used to be amazing :("
The Palace used to be an amazing, special getaway location. Lately though, it seems to be in need of some updating. The rooms are comfortable, and the staff is attentive, but there are little touches that make this less than a luxury-class hotel. For example, the lamp shades in my room were yellowed and stained, the furniture had some significant scratching, […] and the carpets are either in need of replacement or a deep cleaning. Aside from that, the rest of the amenities made the room where we stayed just a basic, simple room -- nothing as elegant or special as the rest of the hotel would have you believe you were getting. We loved this historic hotel, the lobby is gorgeous. Our room had no view but was the quietest hotel room we've ever had in the city. Hotel staff helpful and friendly. "Nice hotel, but very dated"
Very nice posh hotel, but missed many modern features, such as free wifi, or power plugs in the room to charge your phone at night. We stayed 4 nights and on two of the nights we were distrubed by loud guests. Not the hotel's fault, but indication of the thickness of the walls. "Great hotel in a great location"
Centrally located near Union Square and the Bart station and Muni stop are literally outside its doors on Market--so convenient to just leave your car in the garage. Also necessary because this area is always busy, and in my case with the President in town, essential. As a high-end hotel with historic significance, the facilities, staff, the comfort […] of the room, etc., are all superb and to be expected. The dining room is a marvel and well worth the price (plus good service). Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
We had a lovely stay at The Palace. Upon check-in, we mentioned we were on our honeymoon. When we entered our room, it was cozy, romantic and very clean. As we were freshening up for dinner, we heard a knock on the door. We were surprised with a bottle of chilled champagne, delightful chocolates and a hand written note from Adriana at the front desk […] congratulating us. We loved exploring this beautiful hotel, eating at their delicious pub and reading about it's history! Thank you...we WILL be back! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
We were not familiar with the hotel and picked it based on other Hotels.com reviews. We were NOT disappointed. The hotel is stunning, the guest rooms are beautiful and very comfortable. "One nighter in SF"
My husband and I found our room to be very comfortable and quiet. I guess got lucky. The others we traveled with had noisy neighbors. Other than that we enjoyed our stay. It was a great hotel in a great location. Room service was very helpful. The building was beautiful. The room was very simple but clean and we had a great view!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
Beautiful building. Just I think they should illuminate a little bit its galleries and halls. The bedroom was nice. I recommend to bring an information brochure to the guests with schedules and amenities availables. For example, in our case, nobody tell us where was the pool.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Beautiful, tucked-away staycation spot"
First-time stay. I'm a local and was pleased. I had walked by the entrance on Market a million times none the wiser. Check-in was efficient. I was given an upgraded room (don't know how much better it was without a point of reference) and 3 pm late checkout (my SPG membership probably aided that). The hotel was beautiful, classic, and historic. It's […] quiet. The decor is luxurious and makes for some great photos. The room was "small" (still more than enough room for my bf and me) but that is true of most older hotels. Not a problem, as the facilities were clean and updated. I am a stickler for clean bathrooms, so if I was pleased, it was good. Unfortunately, the in-room service menu is atrociously expensive and deterred us from patronizing, although I really wanted to treat the bf to it. When I can walk to the end of the street and get a hearty breakfast from La Boulange for $8 or so, why would I pay 3-4x that? Still, standard for a posh hotel, I guess. Free coffee and tea in the lobby, though, which was nice. Overall, no complaints, and while I want to hotel-hop in the city for a while, I would be happy to stay here again in the future. "Beautiful Historic Hotel"
The Palace is a fabulous experience. A beautiful historic hotel in the heart of San Francisco. The Garden Court is gorgeous and a very fine dining experience. Hotel is beautifully maintained. Staff is courteous and very responsive. We were offered a late check out upon our arrival, without asking for it. We would go back any time!Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Slow, dirty, but at least room was comfortable"
Service was slow-- valet wasn't in front of hotel when we arrived, room service was slow, front desk was slow, restaurant was slow and not very accommodating for food allergies. Pool and pool deck were dirty-- hair on edges of pool deck, dirt in corners of pool in the water!Genuine Hotels.com guest review

We have stayed at this hotel a number of times and have always enjoyed it; it has become our favorite. The service and amenities have always been topnotch. We usually arrive by BART which brings us right to their door. Most of the things we want to do and see are within walking distance.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
The front desk manager went out of his way to assist us when our key failed to work. When we checked out, he even carried our luggage to the BART station as he could see we were loaded on. It really made the difference in our stay.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Palace Hotel in SF is fantastic!"
I wan't sure what to expect at this hotel, looking great on a website has fooled me in the past. We stay in SF frequently and usually try a different hotel each time, just for kicks. This place was the nicest one! (OK we don't stay at the Westin St Francis) The location is unbeatable by ANY hotel. Just outside is the underground for the Muni & BART, […] one minute walk from a quiet Starbucks, and not anywhere near the Tenderloin, which most downtown hotels are adjacent to. Inside was BEAUTIFUL. It is one of the classiest and nicest hotels in SF. The on site restaraunt and bar were overpriced, but gorgeous. Dozens of other choices are within a three minute walk. Parking, like at any other downtown hotel is pricey. If you must have a car there, which you should avoid using anytime during your stay, park in Japan Town. Across the street is the start of Geary which will take you directly there and has quick cheap bus travel. If you read any complaints about people not enjoying their stay in SF, you know they were using a car. Don't do it! Ditch your car somewhere cheap (Japan Town) and don't look at it again till you check out. The room we stayed in on the 8th floor was a little larger than most downtown rooms, but still small. The bed was very comfortable with nice linens and the bathroom was large. The room had everything you would want with a big desk, tons of outlets, operable windows, large closet, nice hangers, a robe, small fridge, large TV, etc, etc. The room was beautiful, as was the rest of the hotel. The carpeting shown signs of a little wear, but the overall quality and location make up for any preceived shortcoming. The service level of each person we encountered was top rate. The bellmen, customer service agents, and wait staff were all very friendly, efficient and good natured. I think I will have to end my hotel swapping and stick to this one for a while. "Great location, very thin walls!"
Location superb, service and personnel were great. Walls were so thin that you could hear conversations from the next room on both sides. We could hear a cell phone conversation next door, where we could hear both sides of the conversation through the thin walls. On a busy weekend, where both rooms next to you are occupied, this makes for a very unpleasant […] stay. Rest of hotel is great and has old world charm, but would not stay here again for that reason. "Outstanding service at this hotel"
My husband and I periodically spend a weekend in San Francisco, and we chose this hotel recently because of its historic character (and especially beautiful public spaces). We had a wonderful experience as a result of some special attention from the front desk manager, who went out of his way to help when we had difficulty using our door key ( leaving […] champagne in our room by way of apology). When we left, he even walked us to the Bart station to help us down the stairs with our luggage. This kind of service is rare nowadays, and it definitely earned our loyalty. the hotel is beautiful, and the rooms are quite comfortable. An excellent choice, in my book. "Comfy bed, but noisy AC. Normal rooms need refurbs"
Overall a pretty good hotel for what we paid. On the plus side we had a comfortable and huge king size bed, large room and good cleanliness. Negatives however include a very inefficient AC that made a lot of noise, a relatively worn interior and amenities coming straight out of the eighties except the flatscreen TV we never turned on. Pool/exercise […] room/jacuzzi/sauna access included in the rate was a plus, although the pool is too shallow to be used for any serious swimming. Location was great, walkable to all of downtown San Francisco. Would probably stay again, but not at the full rate. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good but room to improve"
King size bed was very comfy. Overall stay was good but bathroom was too cramp unless you upgrade to a suite. Pool and sauna were nice but hot tub didn't work very well. Great location with BART & Metro station right outside and street car / bus stop one block away. Lots of good dinning & shopping near by. Mini fridge not stocked and no coffee or tea […] in room unless getting room service or upgrading to suite. Coffe and tea in lobby but hot water was not hot or empty.
We stayed here as part of a family vacation in California. Very convenient location. The rooms are comfortable and have an old world charm in their decor. The Pied Piper Bar and Ghirardelli Ice Cream shop in the building were significant advantages! The staff was very nice. The Front Desk Supervisor, Mr. Pierre Redelsperger, was of particular note. We had a minor problem with noise from the guest in the next room and Mr. Redelsperger immediately had us moved to another room. Excellent service! The concierges were very helpful for making tour and dinner arrangements. They even helped us with our plane boarding passes. The only negative, and frankly this is all over SF, is the high number of homeless people on the streets around the hotel some of whom are very aggressive.
"Handy Location with loads of Character."
Enjoyed a 3 night stay in September 14 with my wife and part of a larger group on holiday. Nice room on 4th floor level - room was a little dated and in need of an upgrade - mostly the bathroom. Super comfortable bed and great room service each day. The Hotel Foyers and Dinning rooms were fantastic and the location was great. Would Recommend and will choose this Hotel when we return to San Fran.
"affordable lunch in the Garden Court, Palace Hotel, SF"
09/19/14 Judith C Washington, District of Columbia, District of Columbia, United States
so, really, we wanted "high" tea in the stunning, glass-ceilinged Palace Hotel Garden Court but weren't going to be there on Saturday so we settled for a weekday lunch. (lunch wasn't cheap, but it was a lot less than a night at the hotel...thus, an affordable way to experience this grand space) good decision! we'll always opt for food + architecture/setting and got it here. AND historic architecture with historic food! turns out the Green Goddess salad dressing was invented at the Palace: wow. so naturally we got the Palace Dungeness crab salad with Green Goddess for the full historic experience. (they even have the recipe on their website in case we want to make it at home :)) the salad was good as was the Green Goddess. tomato soup good. the breads in the bread basket on the other hand were GREAT. lovely, fresh mini baquette, totally melt in your mouth biscuit, lovely rosemary roll, and triangular bread thing with capers. the bread basket alone was worth admittance. service was lovely: they indulged us with a cup 2/3 de-caf with a splash of caf and extra Green Goddess. thanks, donny. the location is also just about perfect: walking distance from the perfect, in my opinion, location the Union Square area; and another short walk to the Jewish Museum in one direction and the Ferry Terminal in another. if you want to treat yourself to a hotel stay at the Palace, join the Nat'l Trust for Historic Preservation first and get the historic hotels of America discount. (and, yes, all my reviews are "excellent." if they are trying; it's a place i'd go back; and no one actually p---es me off i'd say excellent)
"Classic SF, Great Location"
09/18/14 Hersheybits Los Angeles, California
This hotel is traditional, classic and historical San Francisco. The public areas are impressive. The hotel is excellently located, convenient to public transportation, union square, shopping, the start-end of the cable car lines. Walking distance to many key sites and venues. The hotel staff clearly understands the hospitality business. The reception desk, concierge, housekeeping, all know there stuff, and aims to please guests. We went on a particularly busy weekend, and they really worked hard to please us with an early check in and late check out and provide a room close to other family members was as requested. The rooms and bathrooms were clean, classic, and elegant, although some of the furnishings in the room could be changed out. (The couch in our room was a bit worn and the knobs on one of the furnishings where the television was placed did not match.) But the bed was comfortable. The hotel also has a wonderful Ghirardelli shop right in the hotel, so one needs not wait in long lines near Fisherman's Wharf for some of the worlds best ice cream and chocolate treats.

Nice hotel. The location was excellent: walking distance to Bart. In the center of dowtown. I have arrived with my car and parked there for my whole stay ($59/night). I went out for breakfast to the Grove a couple of blocks walk. I can recommend a few restaurant but the best was a Spanish restaurant called B44 located in Belden Place (6 blocks from the hotel). The hotel room nice and clean and overall no problems to get the car in amd out from the parking using their valedt system.

This place was wonderful! Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to use everything that was available to us because there is so much to do there, but, the hotel itself is beautiful! So full of old world charm and elegance. Great location for everything. We walked to the Ferry Building for breakfast one morning. It's also a quick walk to Union Square. There's also a Ghiradelli Chocolate store on the bottom floor! Can it get any better!? I would definitely recommend this hotel =!
"Still beautiful and now improved"

I returned to the Palace this week for 3 nights in Rm 822 after a stay in 2012 (see my earlier review, Apr 18/12). At that time I mentioned being taken aback by the internet policy which levied a separate charge for each device, even if used by one person or couple in a room. I was delighted to find that Management has amended their policy and that for one $15 per day charge (discounted for 48 and 72 hours), a guest can use up to 3 devices. That's what I call responsive management. For the luxurious grandeur this property holds - and its breakfast room and ballrooms are unparalleled in their splendor - it's the employees that make it such a special place to stay. Without exception, each chambermaid I encountered was friendly and courteous, doormen were prompt and helpful (2 of them offered to carry my suitcase down the Bart stairs!) and guest services and front desk staff, like Gerry, were excellent to deal with. Particular standouts on this trip were Ruben on reception who checked me in - every hotel should be so lucky to have such a wonderful ambassador of their establishment who makes such a professional and positive first impression, the lovely Emma in Guest Services who was a warm and sympathetic listener who helped hold the adjoining room empty for my last night, and Natalia in Guest Services who took initiative to provide great service, and unprompted, offered to send to my room a coffee machine to avoid me having to make an early morning trip to the complimentary coffee station in the breakfast hall for that wake up cup of coffee. Folks like these, who go above and beyond to make guests feel welcomed and taken care of make all the difference. Kudos and thanks to the Palace management and staff for their proactive and caring approach to service. In the interests of a balanced review, the negatives are: as an historic building, the walls are relatively thin and plumbing as well as guest chatter and laughter in adjoining rooms is transmitted relatively easily (and unfortunately I had to contend with the volume of the 4 young women in the adjoining room, laughing and talking loudly, cursing non-stop, and weeping) - which I managed with a tactful call to them and a good set of ear plugs. On my last night, I was relieved that the 4 women had left, but it was now the new occupants on my other side whose talk and laughter could clearly be heard. Although this is not something the hotel can remedy easily or at all, I had to remove a star as it materially detracted from my enjoyment. That said, staff can and do manage issues after the fact. When I asked reception when the young women were checking out, staff apologized for the noise and requested that should there be a recurrence of problems, to immediately let them know and they would deal with the issue. The other item is minor and fixable: the alarm clock has a bright blue lighted face with no dimmer mechanism - challenging for those of us who find it hard to sleep on the road. No peeping at the time in the middle of the night, as it had to be turned away or covered up. Apart from that, location is ideal for proximity to everything useful - including the Bart station right outside the door for inexpensive and efficient transport to the airport, and a Ghiradelli chocolate shop right in the hotel. Rooms have spacious high ceilings, dreamy beds and bedding, and the 4th floor has the most attractive indoor pool area, with loungers, tables, and a domed glass ceiling letting in plenty of light. I recommend the Palace and would return to it again.
"Good hotel - amazing dining room"
09/14/14 siannoble Auckland Region, New Zealand
We stayed here recently and were overwhelmed by the beautiful dining room when we arrived. We were part of a big group and there was a bit of a mix up and they weren't ready to check us in when we arrived, despite knowing we were coming for months. This was apparently because other guests were allowed late check out. There was also an issue with our luggage. It took two hours for it to arrive in our room. A bit of a disaster as we'd just been on an 15 hour flight from NZ and had a planned activity two hours after we arrived, so were trying to grab a shower and redo make up etc. Bags arrived ten minutes before we were due to leave, so managed it, but only just. Would have preferred to have been allowed to go down to the basement to collect and bring up my own luggage! We did receive an apology from the manager and some free vouchers for drinks at the bar, but not until our last day, so didn't actually get to use them! Room was big and comfortable enough. Breakfast in the dining room was lovely. Another issue was the toilets in the public areas was locked. I managed to find out the code from our group organiser, but it didn't work at times. Annoying to have to go up to our room to use the bathroom. This review sounds quite negative, but we enjoyed our stay. Good area with lots of shopping nearby. You can catch a street car just around the corner on the main road and the concierge was really helpful with this. Staff were generally very friendly. The pied piper bar was good, though closes very early at 12pm. There is a seven eleven shop round the corner, but watch out for the homeless people late at night!
