The Donatello gives you a comfortable room that is large for this city, especially for the Union Square area. It is in a great spot near Chinatown,... shops, a short drive or ride to the Wharf area and Japantown. There is a garage on property that is the cheapest in the area, but is still not cheap. Buses stop at the front door and cable cars are just a short walk away. There is great shopping in the area as well with many name boutiques. Restaurants abound nearby and within a short walk or ride. I think it's ideal. The hotel itself is a bit worn, but in the middle of renovating rooms. Service is very good. It's a 3 1/2 star property that wants to be 4 star. Amenities are nice and there is a rooftop lounge area with free coffee/tea where you can sit and relax by a fireplace or sit outside and soak up the views until late at night. Massages and hot tub are available. I have stayed 3 times and enjoyed each. Please note the property is split in two, upper floors are time share (Club Donatello) and lower are hotel (Donatello Hotel). Room decor is slightly different, but service is unified and the same (one front desk and entrance for both it's just the floors). The time share rooms are last to be renovated, but still OK and you can find them online as I did here. There really is no major difference. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, especially first timers who want easy access to all the different spots. by a Hotels.com guest on 03/07/12
