Grant Hotel

This is a nice, basic hotel. The staff was friendly. The provided breakfast (coffee and danish) was small, but fresh. The room looked a little out of date, but was clean. There were no extras at this hotel (e.g. no coffee maker, shampoo/soap were in wall containers, etc...). However, the location was excellent - close to Union Square and Chinatown.

We were very pleased with our stay at the Grant. While the price seems very expensive relative to the rest of the USA, it's on the reasonable side for San Francisco. This is a well-located economy hotel with clean room, a friendly staff, decent enough continental breakfast. A downside was severe chilliness (fall weather), except for a few minutes in late afternoon when a small radiator got turned on apparently centrally; no way to control it in the room. I stayed at this hotel for a business trip and would stay there again. I was not in my room very much so I was just looking for a cheaper clean room close to my conference site. Old hotel. Complementary breakfast was in lounge from hotel (limited seating) and consisted of croissant/muffin with coffee or tea from machine. For cappuccino/orange juice, from same machine, was an extra charge. Paid valet parking ($23 per day) across the street.

This was an older hotel with nice staff and at an excellent location. It was the lowest price in the area and for that it might have been worth it. I would not stay there again. However we are an active older couple and it was just TOO basic. (Don't use the shampoo)

If you are looking for a great price in downtown SF - this is the place. It is not luxurious, but it was clean and neat. The owners are trying hard - the room had a new-looking paint job and the bathroom was clean relatively "new" looking. Very small, and obviously old, but worth a shot.

ADVANTAGES: 1. Location is prefect, cable car stop is 3 min to walk, 10 minute to ride it to BART (Powell station). 2. Price (in regrads to the location): good. 3. Room is on the first floor: cell phone is NOT ACESSIBLE AT ALL at that […] part of the hotel, you can't even send a text message from it. You'd gotta run to the hotel door in the evening if somebody calls or sends a message to your cell phone, horrible! 2. Internet is slow and is not included to the service. 3. Breakfast is very "basic", no meat, or omlet, or vegetables, only desert, cakes, etc. 4. The reception lady has difficulties to understand English you are not a native English speaker , especially if you are from Europe (she is a first generation Asian). It is especially true for the phone conversation. 5. For a couple (2 adults): they gave 3 (?)horible small flat "rubber" pillows and one blanket. I was staying with my adult son, very inconvenient. 6. One very small "body" towel, plus towels for hands. I stayed at the Grant Hotel because my 1st choice was sold out and the previous reviews were not bad. I can't see how this place has a 3.9 out of 5. The rooms were old, had a bad smell and it was overall a bad experience. The staff was nice.

It was too noicy. I stayed 3 nights. They do some maintanance in the night in the very old building that makes lot ot DOM-DOM noice all over the night. You wount get good sleep in the nights. Next time I wount go there even for free.

It was clean and neat with a very firm mattress. The tv gets only two channels but there is free wifi in the lobby (though not in the rooms.) There is a continental breakfast of sorts--I did not eat it but others seemed to be enjoying it. The hotel is close enough to transportation to the area's main attractions.

I enjoyed my stay at the Grant Hotel. It is a no frills kind of place -there aren't many amenities here. What a great spot - I was close to everything. The front desk staff were awesome and the parking garage was just across the street - reasonable and wonderful. Looking for a no-frills cheap hotel in the heart of downtown San Francisco, then the Grant is for you. Reasonably clean and safe for a decent price. As others have said, it is near a gay strip club so perhaps not the best for kids, etc, but there is a great sushi place next door (Sushi Toni).

I had read people complaining about the "hill you have to walk up" to get to the Hotel. Well, I would say, "yes it is a hill, but it is not that bad!" If you come from any State that is primarily flat or has "tiny" hills, then this will be a shock to your system. Also, if you are totally unfit, any hill you would hate! The suggested one at the back of the Hotel. This was very quiet, except for one time when someone across in another building decided to answer his mobile phone at 2:00am and talk very loudly, waking me up in the process, due to the fact I had my windows open. Remedied by closing my windows :D The 2 computers they have in the lobby for Internet access had "spotty" connections...ie sometimes it would take an age to connect, if it did at all, to some sites. That was frustrating when I was trying to change my flights around. Apart from that - everything else was fine..shower was hot, bed was good, room was clean. I did not expect much, but got a little more than I thought and it worked for my needs being at a business conference all day, out for meal in the evening and then crashing in a bed at night. I check-in late in the evening. The staff at the hotel were expecting me. They were friendly, did the paperwork and handed the keys to me. Later on, I asked to switch rooms because there was no 3G coverage in my room (410). Also, the room wasn't very nice: the window in the bathroom could not be closed entirely.
