Flagship stores ring Union Square, among the vanguard of West Coast retail. Chinatown begins at Grant Avenue and Bush Street, while Gold Rush-era mansions crown Nob Hill. South of Union Square, the convention center area includes the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Cable cars turn around at Powell and Market streets to head back to Fisherman's Wharf.

This is a nice, basic hotel. The staff was friendly. The provided breakfast (coffee and danish) was small, but fresh. The room looked a little out of date, but was clean. There were no extras at this hotel (e.g. no coffee maker, shampoo/soap were in wall containers, etc...). However, the location was excellent - close to Union Square and Chinatown.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"A good buy at the price and location"
Clean, safe, comfortable, good location, good staff. Nothing fancy but a good buy at the price.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"In the heart of where I wanted to be"
Basic, clean, value-based rooms. Quiet. Friendly, helpful staff available 24 hrs. Outstanding location close to good, reasonable restaurants and my meeting hotel on Nob Hill for 1/3 the cost. Great access to cabs, cable cars. Two blocks to Union Square shopping. Gay strip club two doors down, but not sleazy. Very reasonable in and out parking directly […] across street ($26/night). Free wifi and computers in lobby, good connection. Happy to stay there again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Very nice hotel near Union Square / Nob Hill"
We were very pleased with our stay at the Grant. While the price seems very expensive relative to the rest of the USA, it's on the reasonable side for San Francisco. Things that were good: breakfast with pastries and coffee. Elevator that works. :-) Things that weren't so good: wifi is pay-wifi in the rooms. Hotel is on the top of the hill so getting […] home from Union Square after a long day of conferencing or siteseeing can be hard on the knees. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"5 Nights Never Warm"
This is a well-located economy hotel with clean room, a friendly staff, decent enough continental breakfast. A downside was severe chilliness (fall weather), except for a few minutes in late afternoon when a small radiator got turned on apparently centrally; no way to control it in the room. Also a shortage of TV channels and furniture. No chest of […] drawers for instance,so it was necessary to live off a hangup closet without door. Room would have been big enough for an easy chair and floor lamp. But only seat except bed was a desk chair. Would I stay again? Maybe, in warm weather, but I'd look for an alternative first in similar price range. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Better than adequate for the price"
an older hotel, but clean. morning pastries were good quality. free wi-fi in the lobby. very international clientele who appreciate a reasonably priced stay. easy walk to Union Square.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Cheap and clean"
I stayed at this hotel for a business trip and would stay there again. I was not in my room very much so I was just looking for a cheaper clean room close to my conference site. My room was very clean and well maintained. The walls are thin but the building is old so the noise level is about what I expected. I was able to sleep well and had no problems […] at all. My biggest complaint would be that the bath towels are too small for adults. If you are looking for a cheaper place that is walking distance to many sites and the trolley this is a good choice. "smelly and run down--a very last resort"
I had to chose this hotel as there were no other options due to the US Open happening in SF. The hallways smelled very bad and the room had nothing except the old bed and a lamp, including no heat in the evening. I requested a blanket and the one that arrived smelled so I opted for the cold. Definitely avoid this hotel unless it is the absolute last […] resort. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location for the price!"
Great location; interesting hotel; friendly and helpful staff. Parking garage across the street. Wish I had a couple of more days to stay there.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"central location"
Old hotel. Complementary breakfast was in lounge from hotel (limited seating) and consisted of croissant/muffin with coffee or tea from machine. For cappuccino/orange juice, from same machine, was an extra charge. Paid valet parking ($23 per day) across the street.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"OK if you are not in the room much"
This was an older hotel with nice staff and at an excellent location. It was the lowest price in the area and for that it might have been worth it. I would not stay there again. However we are an active older couple and it was just TOO basic. (Don't use the shampoo)Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"good value"

"Grant Hotel"
If you are looking for a great price in downtown SF - this is the place. It is not luxurious, but it was clean and neat. The owners are trying hard - the room had a new-looking paint job and the bathroom was clean relatively "new" looking. Very small, and obviously old, but worth a shot.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Grant Hotel on Bush str., 3 nights in Januray 2012"
ADVANTAGES: 1. Location is prefect, cable car stop is 3 min to walk, 10 minute to ride it to BART (Powell station). 2. Price (in regrads to the location): good. 3. Comfort: very basic but reasonable for a 3-star hotel in the heart of San Francisco. See also below. DISADVANTAGES: 1. Room is on the first floor: cell phone is NOT ACESSIBLE AT ALL at that […] part of the hotel, you can't even send a text message from it. You'd gotta run to the hotel door in the evening if somebody calls or sends a message to your cell phone, horrible! 2. Internet is slow and is not included to the service. 3. Breakfast is very "basic", no meat, or omlet, or vegetables, only desert, cakes, etc. 4. The reception lady has difficulties to understand English you are not a native English speaker , especially if you are from Europe (she is a first generation Asian). It is especially true for the phone conversation. 5. For a couple (2 adults): they gave 3 (?)horible small flat "rubber" pillows and one blanket. I was staying with my adult son, very inconvenient. 6. One very small "body" towel, plus towels for hands. You may ask to borrow a hair dryer if you are lucky enough and nobody had done it yet in the morning before you. I will NOT stay in it next time. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Would not stay here again"
I stayed at the Grant Hotel because my 1st choice was sold out and the previous reviews were not bad. I can't see how this place has a 3.9 out of 5. The rooms were old, had a bad smell and it was overall a bad experience. The staff was nice.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

Pretty clean, recently painted or rennovated, quiet. Free wifi in the lobby (though it's slow). Continental breakfast was alright, only pastries (recommend getting coffee elsewhere). Location is convenient: 3 blocks from Union Square, couple blocks from Chinatown.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Grant Hotel in San Francisco"
It was clean and neat with a very firm mattress. The tv gets only two channels but there is free wifi in the lobby (though not in the rooms.) There is a continental breakfast of sorts--I did not eat it but others seemed to be enjoying it. The hotel is close enough to transportation to the area's main attractions.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

Fancy Victorian style hotel, granite everywhere, crown molding. Great location to San Jose airport and businesses visited. Breakfast was good, lots of options. Big room.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Grant Hotel"
I enjoyed my stay at the Grant Hotel. It is a no frills kind of place -there aren't many amenities here. But the room was big, clean, comfortable - it had a TV and a bathroom, and a decent chocolate croissant and coffee for breakfast. Plus I could hear the bells of the cable cars on Powell Street from my room. How much more SF could I get? All for a […] great price. If you want lots of services and amenities, this isn't the place for you. But if you want a quiet, clean room for a ridiculous price - definitely stay here. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Excelllent location and staff"
What a great spot - I was close to everything. The front desk staff were awesome and the parking garage was just across the street - reasonable and wonderful. "Gets the job done ..."
Looking for a no-frills cheap hotel in the heart of downtown San Francisco, then the Grant is for you. Reasonably clean and safe for a decent price. As others have said, it is near a gay strip club so perhaps not the best for kids, etc, but there is a great sushi place next door (Sushi Toni).Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"NO FRILLS DECENT HOTEL!"
THE LOCATION IS UNBEATABLE FOR A TOURIST. YOU ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF EVERYTHING AND SAFELY AWAY FROM THE REPORTEDLY SEEDY AREA NEAR UNION SQUARE. COULD NOT EVALUATE THE PAID PARKING FACILITY AS I FOUND NO NEED TO GET A RENT- A- CAR WHILE WE WERE IN AND AROUND SAN FRANSISCO. COMPLIMENTARY BREAKFAST WAS OK. NO EGG DISHES , MIND YOU....... THE COUNTER STAFF […] WERE BUSINESS LIKE, NO SMILE OR FRILLS BUT DO THEIR JOB. HOUSE KEEPING ON CALL IS NON- EXISTENT, THOUGH THEY DO A GOOD CLEAN UP EVERY MORNING . FAIR ENOUGH. THE ONLY REAL NEGATIVE I FOUND WAS A PERSISTENT ODOUR FROM ?? CARPET ?? FLOOR CLEANER - BUT YOU GET USED TO IT (NATURAL LAW!..) THE ROOM AND TOILETS WERE EXTREMELY CLEAN,... WOULD LIKE TO COMPLEMENT THE TOILET AGAIN- SPOTLESS!! (EVEN IN CORNERS!) WE HAD A ROOM WITH AN OUTSIDE VIEW, TOWARDS THE BACK BUT MANY ROOMS ARE ONE WITH WINDOWS WHICH WHEN OPENED WILL FIND YOU STARING AT ADJACENT IMPERSONAL ,BLAND WALLS WITHIN 2-3 FEET, MIND YOU........ ASK FOR A ROOM TOWARDS THE REAR. WIFI IN LOBBY WAS GOOD STRENGTH. IN ADDITION YOU GET TO USE TWO COMPUTERS THERE - COMPLIMENTARY ,- CAN TAKE OUT PRINTS, FAX , WHATEVER... SERVES AS A BUSINESS CENTRE. OVERALL OUR 6 NIGHT STAY - MY WIFE AND TWO KIDS WAS GOOD. NO FRILLS..... MIND YA... Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Hotel totally suited my need"
I had read people complaining about the "hill you have to walk up" to get to the Hotel. Well, I would say, "yes it is a hill, but it is not that bad!" If you come from any State that is primarily flat or has "tiny" hills, then this will be a shock to your system. Also, if you are totally unfit, any hill you would hate! Anyway - for me the hill was no […] problem at all, a very nice walk from Powell St station. The Hotel was efficient with my check-in and I asked for a "quiet" room. The suggested one at the back of the Hotel. This was very quiet, except for one time when someone across in another building decided to answer his mobile phone at 2:00am and talk very loudly, waking me up in the process, due to the fact I had my windows open. Remedied by closing my windows :D The 2 computers they have in the lobby for Internet access had "spotty" connections...ie sometimes it would take an age to connect, if it did at all, to some sites. That was frustrating when I was trying to change my flights around. Apart from that - everything else was fine..shower was hot, bed was good, room was clean. I did not expect much, but got a little more than I thought and it worked for my needs being at a business conference all day, out for meal in the evening and then crashing in a bed at night. I would stay here again, as I felt perfectly safe walking around. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Grant Hotel SF - good, clean place to stay"
The Grant Hotel is just a half-block off of Powell, a good location to walk to Union Square, Chinatown, or Market Street (I was in town for a convention at the Moscone about .8 miles away) all within a mile. The hotel was clean, the staff friendly, and the rates reasonable. The only downside was lack of free wireless, but there was access to wireless […] for a small fee. And Vito's across the street makes excellent pizzas! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Grant Hotel in downtown San Francisco"
I check-in late in the evening. The staff at the hotel were expecting me. They were friendly, did the paperwork and handed the keys to me. Later on, I asked to switch rooms because there was no 3G coverage in my room (410). Also, the room wasn't very nice: the window in the bathroom could not be closed entirely. They offered me another room that in […] the end was nicer, newer, but still had no 3G coverage. So travelers, please take into account that T-mobile 3G coverage in this hotel is unavailable. Instead, you'll need to pay Citi-Net for WiFi access that works more or less (slow, decent coverage). Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"GOod Value, but not what we wanted"
Room was a little shabby, in need of updating. But it was clean, the service was good. THe mattress was as hard as a rock, and was difficult to find a comfortable spot. Would definitely recommend this for students or people on a limited budget.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Simple, OK"
The room was as expected for a 2-star hotel room, beds, TV etc in place, outdated decor and stained tiles in the bathroom, but it was reasonably clean. Location is great for Union Square, although the neighbouring XXX theatre detracts. Helpful staff.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
