Flagship stores ring Union Square, among the vanguard of West Coast retail. Chinatown begins at Grant Avenue and Bush Street, while Gold Rush-era mansions crown Nob Hill. South of Union Square, the convention center area includes the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. Cable cars turn around at Powell and Market streets to head back to Fisherman's Wharf.

"A curate's egg"
An excellent location particularly for China Town, but a long uphill walk from Bart. Staff very courteous and obliging - except that alarm call we booked was late as was call re shuttle bus and in neither case did the operator stay to confirm an answer. It is really hard to keep old rooms fresh and clean but hotel achieved this. With a little more effort […] the hotel could be excellent. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Clean and affordable place in Union Square"
Housekeeping service was good. Place is clean. No bed bugs (I checked for them first). Price is reasonable. Walls are thin and so is the noise from rooms above. But if you need a clean room with little amenities I recommend this.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"old mattresses and boiling hot rooms"
the individual springs in the mattress felt like they were bursting through the padding. Time for a new mattress Grant Plaza Hotel! Also, the radiator was on and made the room like a boiler room -- unless you opened the window and then of course there was the street noise...Genuine Expedia guest review
"Cheap and Conveniently Located"
The room heat could not be adjusted-too hot. The bathroom needed painting and the tile floor needed brightening. It was quiet and the bed was good. LIght was okay for reading.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Nice location and affordable price"
Nice location and affordable price for a room with its own bathroom for travelers who just need a place to stay in San Francisco. It was the second time I stayed at this hotel and I would definitely consider it again if I am making another trip to SF.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Good location, but not comfortable."
Nice location and friendly staff. It was hard to sleep though because it was either too warm or too cold. There is no temp regulator in the room.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"close to downtown, but lacking in comfort"
Price and location were right, room was clean, had free wifi. Shower didn't have hot water either morning, bed and pillows were not very comfortable, TV had 10 channels. You get what you pay for.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great small boutique hotel in heart of Chinatown!"
Great, small, boutique hotel right in the heart of Chinatown. My only complaint would be the lound people next door. One of the best showers I've ever taken...superb heat and pressure.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Great Hotel in China Town"
This hotel is in the perfect location if you want the experience of China Town and the convience of Union Square. The hotel is clean, and the staff friendly. The rooms are small, but offer what anyone would need for their stay. I would definately stay in this hotel again, and recommend it to anyone looking for a great location to enjoy China Town.Genuine Expedia guest review
"Decent"
The hotel is an excellent location with a staff that tries to be very helpful. The rooms are generally clean with functioning toilets, showers, faucets, and TV. However, they are on the small size, the beds are a little hard, and the pillows were awful. Our final night there we heard some ruckus out in the hallway. Fortunately it didn't really impact […] our stay other than providing a few nights sleep. If you are looking for a decent hotel at a decent price in the SF downtown this is a good place to stay. "Location, location, location"
If you want a fairly clean and modest hotel room as your "home base" while in San Francisco, this is it! Our room was small, but clean and on the interior of the building which made it quiet but a little dark. We had maid service every day giving us fresh towels and making the bed and she did her best to clean around our piles. The front desk staff […] was very friendly and helpful with questions and we lived by the map they gave us when we checked in. Then, the minute you step out the door, you can go anywhere in SF! You are one block from the gate of Chinatown and a few blocks from the Ferry Building. We are real walkers , so from the hotel we walked to Fisherman's Wharf (on the way back walked all the way up to Coit's Tower), Pier 39, through North Beach and to Haight Ashbury---over 3 days, not on the same day. If we wanted we could have jumped on a cable car near any of these places. This is NOT the Hilton and you have to pay for ice (just a quarter for a half bucket), but you are in a great spot to visit any part of SF you want quickly and easily. I would stay there again. The desk clerks were friendly and helpful. There was a place store luggage before check-in and after check-out. Very handy for a travel schedule. Very handy to Chinatown and the general donwtown shopping/theater district. Buses within a very short distance, one block or so.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Small no frills hotel clean and well maintained"
Small room but very clean and nicely maintained. Conveniently located to places of interest. Staff extremely pleasant and helpful. Definitely not luxury but a perfect place to stay if you are looking for an inexpensive hotel.Genuine Expedia guest review
"If you like mold and mildew with your shower."
The staff was friendly enough, nothing spectacular. The inside of the hotel was decent although it was obvious the building was old and there had been many changes since the original. The room we stayed in was tiny but it served its purpose as being a place to sleep. The room itself was not bad but the shower had more mold and mildew in it than I have […] seen in a long time. Definitely would not pass an inspection. That alone with knowing what that can do to human health made it clear I will never stay there again and ensure that my friends and family don't either. "Good enough for just sleeping and working"
If you just need a place to sleep in and not asking for much more than that, this hotel is what you want. You have a TV set and a WiFi connection; what else do you need? If you're expecting something fancy or elegant, don't bother to consider this place.Genuine Expedia guest review

"Nice location but better get it real cheap"
Little walk up motel, I won't call this a hotel. The room was tiny, spots on the floor, the general condition was shabby. The killer was that the bed felt like a laying on cardboard. I picked it for the location but left and got a room somewhere else after checking out the room.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Good value, lives up to expectations."
With the Grant Plaza you very much get what you expect. It's a cheaper hotel in the middle of Chinatown in SF, and the hotel lives up to that. It's a bit old, and shows it's wear and tear, but the staff is friendly and the rooms are clean and nice. Don't expect 4 star amenities, but if you want a good clean, cheap option for a night or two in the middle […] of everything this is very good option. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review

"Great for the price!"
The hotel staff is great! They're extremely helpful and very friendly. The only complaint we had was the bed was a double, not even a queen. I don't think a queen would have fit in the room and I might have overlooked that detail in booking the room but it was pretty hard to fit a 6'4 guy and myself into a bed that size comfortably. I would recommend […] this hotel to anyone looking to save money in the hotel department. The link on their website to an airport shuttle was also extremely helpful. Good overall! "Great Location"
Place is very old and rooms are small but very good value for location. If you plan on visiting the city and not staying in your hotel room much this place did the trick. "Great location!!! Reasonable rates."
The condition of the hotel is a bit a aged but overall clean. Our room was small but I went to SF to go to Giants games and eat great food. The location was right at the gate to chinatown and I LOVE the food in chinatown. We found a bakery two blocks away with best chinese baked goods. We were also able to get a great meal at 12AM on a Thursday night. […] The day desk clerks were very helpful but one of the night clerks was barely able to speak english. She just gave us a blank look when we asked for directions. She might have been left there temporarily while the normal clerk was gone. All in all I would stay again as the hotel fits my needs. In addition, the day rate for parking was very resonable compared to other rates I was quoted from other hotels. The garage was four blocks away but included in and out privlages. "the economy package"
Stayed here for a 4-night conference. It was less than half the price of the conference hotel (Hyatt). However, the room was VERY small. No ice machines. I had to go to the Starbucks for coffee. The shower was a small stand-only shower w/ a soap dispenser attached to the wall. I managed to get by, but I knew that I was going "economy".Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"It was OK"
This is a classic old hotel just inside the Chinatown gate on the corner of Grant Avenue and Pine. Our room was very small and no frills. It was my son and I so we opted for the two twin beds. The bathroom had a very noisy toilet and we could hear the people in the next room talking. The shower was very small. We're both thin people, an overweight person […] would not be able to use it very comfortably Our room was overlooking a busy street corner with alot of traffic and pedestrians. I took my white noise machine with me and was glad I did because I wouldn't have been able to sleep otherwise, very noisy. There was no parking on site, so we had to park in a public parking garage 2 blocks away and paid $85.00 for parking for a 3 day stay because I had an "oversized vehicle", a full size pickup truck. On the positive side, it was clean and it is centrally located to all the areas of San Francisco you would want to see, Chinatown, Union Square and Fisherman's Wharf. We were 2 blocks from the cable car line stop that took us all the way to Fishermans Wharf and back. We did ALOTof walking because traffic is a nightmare but there is a Starbucks on almost every corner and lots of options for shopping and eating so were took our time and really explored on foot. If I had it to do over I wouldn't stay here, but it was clean, comfortable but small, and we made the best of it. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"A very good option for a cheap hotel in SFO"
This is a good hotel for the value. My ratings might be harsh, but I am used to more luxury things than this. It is small and has some noise issues, but it is clean and cozy and rather cheap for the location so near Market Street, Union Square, Chinatown, and the rest of downtown San Francisco. There are a lot of bus lines looping about the area, too, […] so it makes sense if you want to travel about the city on the cheap. I would definitely recommend this hotel for any travelers, particularly those who want to experience San Francisco without paying out the nose for it. Easy walk from one of the BART stations, and it works as a place to keep things and sleep while on a trip. Do not expect much for amenities and space, but if you are coming to San Francisco for a hotel room you need to have other priorities. So enjoy it! :) Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
"Amazing Location"
Location was amazing! Only stayed one night with hopes of seeing as much of San Francisco as possible. This hotel's location definitely made that possible. Staff was friendly. Free wi-fi. No refridgerator/microwave. Shower head very low. No breakfast. Walls a little thin. Elevator outdated. Location made these tiny things worth it. Right in Chinatown. […] 30 min walk to Pier 39/Fisherman's Warf, or 10 min trollie ride. 10 min walk to Union Square where majority of shopping is. Affliated with nearby vallet parking garage so we got a great deal on parking for the day. After checking out we ventured around the city more and was not charged for additional parking. Also, the hotel had lockers to keep your luggage in after check out. Perfect for our intentions. Would definitely stay here again. Read moreGenuine Expedia guest review
