The Opal was the perfect hotel for us this trip. It's in an awesome location downtown; close to great shops, entertainment and has a nice ambiance. We'll be staying here again.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"frendly staff"
The staff is very friendly, the room is comfortable, clean, but smell a little bit bad, is possible due the old carpet, with wifi, continental breakfast is good, . Is located to 8 blocks to union square, where the tourist bus makes a main stop. Theres a lot of choices to have meals.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
A great value. Clean room, comfortable bed, and a continental breakfast. Not the greatest neighborhood, but within walking distance of some must see destinations.Genuine Hotels.com guest review

"Great for the price!"
The Opal was in a great part of town, surrounded by restaurants, museums, shops, and other cool places. It's attached to a nice diner - great place to get a late night bite. Free breakfast was nice. The rooms were a bit dated and there was a "old house" smell throughout the hotel. Nothing horrible, but I did notice it. Other than that it was all copesetic. […] Great spot for the price. Speechless! The front desk was rude, rooms are small, carpets are stained and disgusting, far from attractions, hookers outside the hotel, out dated TV. I read the reviews on hotel.com and I thought it would be great. Worst place I have ever stayed.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Nice, clean stay in SF"
Stayed at the Opal for three nights, very nice. We arrived a few hours early but they were very friendly and set us up with a room right away. The room was clean and comfortable, the bathroom was a little small but was clean and very modern. Our stay included free breakfast which was nice, mostly bagels, toast, fruit, and yogurt. They have free coffee […] in the lobby too which was nice. There was an unexpected $34.00 a night charge to use the parking garage, so we ended up parking in a nearby garage for less. All in all I would recommend the opal, and I would stay here again! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Great location and comfort"
My wife and I stayed 4 nights and could not have been more pleased. The room was small, but clean and comfortable. The location was ideal and the staff was very helpful and friendly. The lobby was beautiful and there was a wine and cheese hour on the Wednesday night that we stayed. The complimentary breakfast was a nice touch. The fitness room was not […] great, but it served its purpose. I will definitely stay at the Opal on my next trip to San Francisco. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Good location!"
The hotel was very clean and comfortable. There were 3 problems: the air conditioning didn't work, the windows were difficult to open and the wifi connection was poor. Luckily, it was cold out and we used the natural cold from the window. The hotel was decent if you were only going there to sleep and shower. Overall, we had a nice stay here and I would […] recommend it. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

Perfect for a romantic getaway - walking distance to the Kabuki theater for a movie premiere; to the Fillmore for a show, etc.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Very agreeable"
Positive: * Charming hotel with character * Friendly staff * Free WiFi access * Wheel chair accessible * Complimentary breakfast from 6:30AM-10:30AM The rooms are slightly on the smaller side and dated, but the rooms have been maintained. Everything appeared and smelled clean. I was a little iffy on the inside of the shower, but I wear a pair of flip […] flops anyway. The location is convenient (by Japantown) and a public parking garage is close (located on O'Farrell Street - AMC Movie Theatre parking. $24 maximum parking fee). I'd return to the Opal. "Racism is never acceptable."
The hotel would have been fine if it wasn't for the front desk. When I asked for a manager I got "come back later to speak to one, but the manager won't fix it" wow! I had 2 clerks really rude. One when we first checked in. I had questions for her and all she could say was we can't do anything for you. The last clerk pushed me over the edge when she […] purposely tried not to help me. She saw me twice and took every other Caucasian person ahead of me. I may not look like I have money but I was a paying customer. I paid the rate just like everybody else. When asked about checking out and why was the hold not removed already and showing a double charge they told me they could not do anything about it. I will not be staying here ever again. I'm very dissapointed and very upset. I feel it was done purposely not to help me. The sense of racism I get blows my mind. How this day in age we can have that. The hotel looks pretty old and beat up. The rooms are small and the toilets are for the size of a 5 year old. The area isn't too bad. Park in the outside parking. The hotel over charges for their parking. Overall not the experience I hoped. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"Not what I expected"
The lobby of the hotel is nice, but the rooms were terrible! The hotel is older and has some charm in the lobby and has great potential to be a nice place but the outdated rooms were very disappointing. The beds were awful as well as the bedding. The rooms were a normal size but the bathrooms were very old and badly in need of a good cleaning and complete […] re-do. I didn't feel very comfortable in the room and wanted to spend as little time in it as possible. The hotel staff was very nice and friendly. They offered tips and good places to go. This was my first visit to San Francisco and I felt the overall location was fine. The city is very different and at times I felt uneasy walking around, but that is how it is for this area. The Opal is not too far from anything since the bus stop was steps away. For the sightseeing we were within a 10 minute bus ride and a 15 minute walk to the entrance of Golden Gate Park. Distance to Piers is about a 5-10 minute bus ride with a 20-30minute walk depending on how far down you go. The neighborhood is not great, and it is a little scary walking around but most of the streets of the city were like that anyways. There were a lot of homeless people but none of them bothered us. Just be prepared for that. I was just very unhappy with the rooms, I suggest spending a little more money and finding nicer rooms if you are planning a vacation. "nice overnight in the city"
We booked this hotel as an overnight stay for holiday weekend activities in SF. It was centrally located and close to great restaurants and a short drive to the SF Giants baseball stadium. My boy friend uses a wheelchair and the hotel provided a totally accessible room at our request. Our one difficulty was getting in and out of the hotel easily. The […] street to lobby elevator required a hotel staff member with a specific lift key to operate each time we entered and exited the hotel. In the evening when we returned from dinner, the front desk staff had to call maintenance to have the key brought to the lobby. It was awkward and we waited about 15 minutes to get into the hotel. The room was very clean and modern, hallways were dated but they have signs stating that renovation is underway. Our only other complaint was that housekeeping knocked on our door before 9am on a holiday. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Not well represented"
We were very disappointed at the condition, location and price of the hotel. The elevator rarely worked, the room was exceptionally small, no working A/R or bathroom vent. The hotel was very misrepresented in the pictures and reviews. It was our first time in San Fran and if it weren't for the shopping (must take cab), the amazing food and bars (must […] take cab), and the warf (must take cab) we wouldn't be back. "Great affordable hotel"
The opal hotel is perfect if all you are looking for is a place to sleep after seeing the sights at San Francisco. The staff is super friendly and helpful. We had a nice surprise on Wednesday of our trip when they served free wine and cheese during happy hour time. We did not like the continental breakfast. It was a few muffins, fruit, yogurt, hard […] boiled eggs and bread. It's close to a shady area of San Francisco but its not directly in it, so it is safe. It is easy to take the bus and hail a taxi if you are not renting a car. We also liked that we were at least 2 or 3 miles from everything that must be checked out in San Fran. All in all the opal is perfect if you're just looking for a nice hotel to crash in, which is what we wanted! Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Everything but location"
There is nothing else I could ask for in the hotel itself. It is clean and quiet, the staff is friendly and helpful, and the continental breakfast is well-stocked. The building itself is an old Victorian with a lot of charm. The only problem is that it is not centrally located. A few steps away, however, is a bus stop that can take you to the Wharf […] for $2.00. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

This hotel is not the ritz by any means, but it was a clean reasonably priced bed. "All in all not too bad - Except for one thing."
Comfy place with a so-so continental breakfast - everything seemed like it came from a freezer and was just thawed (including muffins). The one thing I didn't like was when I got back home and opened my bag my clothes had an extreme smell of whatever solvents or cleansers they used in the room which made me think that I must have been walking around […] town the whole time smelling like a pungent older hotel. Not cool. For the price...not a bad stay. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"The Opal Hotel in San Francisco"
The hotel staff was very pleasant, in particular Angela was amazingly helpful and friendly. I will definitely be returning to the Opal on my next visit to San Francisco.Genuine Hotels.com guest review
"Rough around the edges, but decent value"
Hotel Opal is located on Van Ness Ave, some 6-7 blocks west of Union Square. For those not familiar with San Francisco, Van Ness is the city's main artery, as it connects the Bay Bridge area with the GG bridge area. On the other hand, Union square is the shopping epicenter of San Francisco. Thus, hotel's location is pretty great. To add to this value, […] the immediate neighborhood is also decent, as there are a few bars/eateries which are open late - for those of you who like us hadn't made dinner plans well in advance. The hotel lobby is very comfortable, the staff is friendly, and the rooms are clean. OK, so these are all positive things, and in fact the main reasons for an overall positive mark. Some other aspects: 1) The hotel itself is very old, and in desperate need of renovation. The room we stayed in was very plain-looking, poorly-lit, TV set was very old school, and the bathroom was one of the smallest I've seen in a while. That said, it was perfectly adequate for folks who view their room as just a place to sleep. 2) Parking is a problem as in most areas of SF. Hotel offers 24-hour in-and-out parking for $27 ($22 with AAA card), and the nearby parking garages were not significantly cheaper either. 3) The breakfast offered by the hotel is somewhat sub-par, or "very continental" as I like to say. Then again, good food is plentiful and affordable in SF, so better wake up early and breakfast somewhere else. Overall, a perfectly decent place, in a good neighborhood. Is it significantly better than the surrounding hotels? Probably not. Is it good enough for a couple of nights? Sure, you bet. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"Value oriented but not comfortable."
Overall rating was a 2 for the value - (great price, staff was nice), but you are better off staying in other areas when you factor in everything. Hotel is very old (no refrigerator, no updated conveniences, paper thin walls), rooms were dirty (carpet was extremely dirty and gross with stains everywhere), showers are very tiny and old.. In addition, […] the room was unusually small - even for the city. Located close to some homeless shleters so it is a little unnerving to walk around at night bc they hang out on the street all night & come up to you (not like in other parts of the city where they leave you alone if you say no). Also need to factor in a chunk of change for parking when you stay here - location is very busy and we weren't able to find any street parking. Sorry, but we will not stay here again when we return to SF in a couple months. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review
"The Opal San Francisco - a very enjoyable stay"
After reading the reviews, I wasn't really sure about what we'd encounter. But, we were pleasantly surprised. The hotel was nice, and our room was clean and very comfortable. I'd read reviews that it was loud, but I didn't find that at all. Our room was quiet, and even had an alarm clock with an ipod docking station, which we loved using. The hotel […] had a continental breakfast, which we had both mornings. It wasn't anything fancy, but was plenty for us, because we're not big breakfast people. We were happy with the yogurt, boiled eggs, toast, fruit, blueberry & banana nut muffins, orange juice, coffee & tea available. I'd read the area around the hotel was rough with lots of homeless people, but we didn't encounter that at all. It was a very centrally located area, that was convenient to all the areas we traveled to. The hotel staff was very nice and accommodating, too. The parking situation was really nice. They gave us a garage door "clicker" so that we could come & go as we pleased. And because of an airline problem we encountered, and needing another night at the hotel (they were booked up), they gave us a discount on the parking. Overall, we were very pleased with the Opal, and would definitely stay there again. Read moreGenuine Hotels.com guest review

"A good option."
The Opal Hotel is on the edge of San Francisco's gritty Tenderloin district; know this should you choose to stay here. To the east, behind the hotel, is a rough few blocks at night, until several blocks outside of Union Square. To the west, across Geary Street, are the Cathedral Hill and Japantown neighborhoods. There is an excellent, local pub and […] eatery, Tommy's Joynt, across the street. And for anyone who has the will, time, and inclination to master the Muni, San Francisco's bus system, the hotel is well served by public transportation. Taxis also run regularly on Van Ness Street. The rooms are small and this is an older hotel. But all things considered, we felt well served and enjoyed our stay. Back at work after a great short vacation, I miss it.
